Norwich vs Chelsea : A case for Romeu ?

Oriol Romeu was a relatively unknown entity when Chelsea bought him from Barcelona, with a buyback clause(or not). But ever since getting decent game time he has shown his ability to be defensively solid. I was surprised to see him benched against Norwich. We had our worst game , not withstanding the one point that was taken.

Ramires and Meireles joined Lampard in midfield. All three of them had a forgettable game, not to mention malouda who came in for lampard , earlier than expected as lampard limped off with an injury. I hope we dont play Ramires Meireles next time because i felt we were letting norwich attack so much. Now i am not much of an expert but on watching the highlights here are somethings i would like to point out.

Ramires and Meireles were frequently being caught out of position. I think alongside romeu , Meireles might be a good option. Ramires was a liability last night and if it wasn't norwich we would have surely had our backsides whipped. I know Rami has the pace to beat players in the midfield but maybe last night was an offgame for the whole team.

I dont know whom to blame in this pic. But i randomly circled out Mata. As the ball comes into norwich's no.4 Mata is nowhere. I am not sure whether the wide player should have been allowed to cross. As the cross came in , it was a li'l iffy as Bosingwa did his best impression of a 4 year old girl. We were lucky as norwich failed to capitalise.

Attack 2 :

This is a more clearer example of what i meant about the positioning of meireles and ramires. As the ball goes into the norwich player ,circled in yellow, notice the position of Ramires, circled blue, he is trying to close him down. Unfortunately for him , the norwich attacker has options and he passes it back. This puts ramires off balance as shown in the next image.

Meireles then tries to cover for Ramires, leaving space out in midfield.

Now both meireles and ramires are out of position. The Norwich attacker fails to capitalise and scuffs a tame shot which is saved by cech.

i am not sure how romeu would have fared but i am sure he wouldn't be barging in like Rami.

I noticed this about Ramires too, however, I attribute it to the fact that since there was no designated holder, he felt the urge/was instructed to stay a little deeper and protect the center backs. He didn’t make too many of his usual surging runs and this is one of his greatest strengths. Easy team or not, we should always run a proper creator-box to box-destroyer triangle in midfield, otherwise it messes up the rhythm of the regulars and no one knows what to do, least of all the other midfielders who aren’t holders.

Not sure I agree. We were defensively solid all game (by our standards anyways).

I would’ve preferred to see Romeu come on and push Raul up than see Malouda come on though. Or Romeu and Raul in a double pivot. Way better options than subbing in Malouda as CM, IMO.

I was just frustrated seeing Malouda in the middle and Mata out wide when it should have been the other way around

There is always a case for Romeu!

I think the entire team always plays better with him on the pitch, he gets the ball from back to front quicker than anyone else in the team without having to lump it forward. He has been one of the few bright spots in this god awful season!

Maka No.2

Romeu has the same ability a Makalele, and unlike Rami grasps the concept of the “holding” midfielder. However Rami could equally play here if he could learn not to chase the ball like a golden retriver (does a great job chasing the ball with amazing stamina, but usually buckels himself or someone else) I maybe a bit Harsh as he has undoubtbly being a very good player this season. But his style of play does leave massive gaps in the midfield from the constant chasing. With Bosingwa’s Lack of positional sense (ach! Hem! Laziness cough). Romeu Provides that safety only moving from his holding role when its absolutely nescessary (like Maka) but immediately returns to him position to act as that link from defence to attack.
