Well maybe there is some truth to the Willian rumors after all...
Anyone who read the post about Willian yesterday would understand that I was more than a bit skeptical about their credibility just due to the general reputation of the Daily Mail. It does appear that the Mail have gotten this one correct though, as Shakhtar released a statement about the situation on their official website today. Here are the relevant points form their response:
- Is Shakhtar prepared to sell Willian to Chelsea?
- The philosophy of our club is simple: If a big club offers serious money for our player, we will always consider its proposal. Of course, if a player himself wants to leave. In our case, Willian expressed his desire to test himself in the Premier League.
- What can you tell about the alleged transfer fee?
- Willian’s contract involves a minimum release clause of 35 million Euros. But we met Willian halfway and are ready to let him go for 30 million. It should be said that for the aforementioned sum of money it will be difficult for us now to sign a player of Willian’s level. If the minimum release clause indicated in the contract had been 50 million Euros, then we would demand for the player no less than 40 million. It is important to understand that today we are talking about Chelsea’s desire to buy Willian, but not Shakhtar’s desire to sell him. We also need this player.
- What is your response to Chelsea’s 20 million bid for Willian?
- When Willian was 19 years old we paid for him almost the same amount of money. What is the point of such a deal then?
I've never seen such a clear cut response from a club in the middle of a negotiation, and frankly I'm shocked by it. What it will certainly do is cut out much of the speculation involved with this scenario as they have laid out their position for all to see. We now know for certain that the club is interested and Willian is in fact available if the valuation is met. I guess this means I'll be doing a Willian profile this afternoon, and it's nice to get thinking about something other than that "game" we all got to see this morning. More to come in a bit...

It's about 24 million pounds when converted from Euros
Probably a little on the high side but certainly not unreasonable for January pricing.

No
Approaching Hazard money for a worse winger than SWeeP was/is? Give me a break even //krasic is better than this let down. I’d rather risk Jovetic glass knee syndrome than buy this one D idiot. One good game against Roma and he lives off it for ever? Even his youtube reels look weak-not good enough, way over priced andf a signing we’d be better off not trying for at more than £5million. Seriously, I pray we don’t go in for and get ripped over a player as limited and weak with end product as Willian.
Not Chelsea class now and never going to be either. 8million more for Eden? I know who’s best value there and he’s not playing for Donetsk. No other top side would want this guy so I fail to understand either our interest or the cost involved. Pants, sorry, this guy is just not very good and, seriously, I prefer Kalou.

We bought Torres for 50 mil
Not saying we are worse then Liverpool but we are not Good always in transfer market
IF you argue that Torres and Shevchenko were vanity buys by our owner
Our only big recent flop has been SWP.
(Not having truly thought this comment through, I’m sure someone will point out others.)
Mutu!
Bosingwa. 18million and he’s been so bad or injured for so long.
I’d honestly say Kakuta too. Not in terms of money but in terms of almost missing out on multiple transfer windows.
But nothing bad came of Kakuta, so that's a non-argument.
Mutu turned out to be a coke-head, but he started really, really well.
You might argue that Bosingwa’s price was a bit high for what we got, but it’s sometimes tough to predict injuries. And he’s been mostly a starter when he’s been healthy (even if many fans don’t like him). Can’t say the same about SWP.
Kakuta
Didn’t we get a transfer ban from signing Kakuta?
No
We appealed it and it was overturned

capped kleberson 32 times?

And he was good even set up one of Ronaldo's goals in the '02 WC Final
Just a flop at United.
So was Forlan, if you recall.
Sometimes it just doesn’t work for some reason between a particular team and club.
touche
I haven’t seen enough of Willian, apart from CL games, to judge, but playing in Ukraine is different to playing top level English football

same thing I was thinking
being only 19 also helps. Plenty of time to develop whatever skills he’s lacking.,
You've never watched a Shakhtar game, have you?
Nobody in there right mind will say that Milos Krasic is better than this kid.

Again with the buy out clause!!
I’m guessing mastiffchild does not return to read the responses he gets, either that or he doesn’t take a hint too well!Perhaps he should offer £33 million and see how he gets on!

Hazard's buyout clause might just become our next running joke
If I get my tablet next week I might do a funny meme about that. Kevin will be pleased!
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Please stop.
Hazard does not have a 33 million pound buyout clause. I am getting so tired of reading this comment.
How many times do you have to be told about Hazard and the buyout?
….or do you just not care?

booo!
In my opinion, though i would prefer to get him than get no one, I think there are better options

Meh.
You always hope for other results to go your way regardless of the season you yourself are having.
Happy dance at 2-1?
well its 4-1 now :D

last march or april i started pushing for mata and willian
so i would definitely be happy if it went down
i think 30 is too much
but i dont dislike him, would prefer jovetic, and dont get me wrong, im fully aware of the whole 33mil eden hazard buyout clause not existing deal, but i think we might as well just try buy eden with an offer around that area, we should bid and then just see what happens, willian and jovetic etc should be our plan B’s
by blue_is_the_colour on Jan 21, 2012 5:04 PM GMT reply actions
Indeed
Hazard would cost more, 33mil at the very LEAST im sure, but if we’re going for it, we may aswel really go for it, there’s no point in just plugging the gaps and making do. I feel thats what we did with merieles after failing with modric and frankly him and his awful long shots are not good enough to start regularly
by ZolaDancesThrough. on Jan 21, 2012 5:09 PM GMT up reply actions
Definitely agree with the offering £33m for Hazard
Even if they say no, the tone of the no will let us know roughly how much we’ll have to pay to get him.
Keep in mind you are talking about two very different currencies as well
30 million Euros is about 24 million pounds. The 33 million number around Hazard is in pounds.
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 21, 2012 5:10 PM GMT up reply actions
But is he 16mil more worth? or 21?
The number they want could easily be 40-45 million pounds
Right.
And if there truly was a 33m buyout on Hazard, I’m sure somebody would’ve paid it by now.
BUT THERE IS NO 33M BUYOUT!!! His price is likely to be much-much higher.
Criminy.
Willian's price can also be higher then 24 mil
Even he could cost 30mil.So just working with rough estimates.
Shakhtar's statement clearly said they'd let him go for 24 million pounds
Releasing that on their website and then holding out for more would likely lead to a very unhappy player.
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 21, 2012 8:02 PM GMT up reply actions
That Statment was on their site??
I didn’t read that part This makes me believe the club want him to leave otherwise putting that statement is worthless.
Check the link
The quoted section in the post is directly from the Shakhtar site

And I doubt they want him to leave, they just realize he's going to anyway
They were in the same boat with Jadson
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 21, 2012 8:07 PM GMT up reply actions
UEFA Champions League
I think Shaktar going out in the UEFA group stage doomed them to selling off a couple of guys. That’s not due to a financial necessity but the UPL isn’t a great league and why play there if you can play elsewhere, especially when you aren’t in UEFA or Europa.
How much did Jadson go for (and when)? I seem to have missed that transfer.
BTW, I think this isn’t the last Ukrainian league signing we’ll do this window. I think today’s match will finally force AVB to ask for a certain RB. However, that RB won’t be available until ACON is finished.
They don't really need to sell
They have an uber-rich owner and can certainly afford to keep him. He wants to go to a bigger club though (as did Jadson), and with 18 months remaining before he leaves on a free it’s probably best just to sell. Jadson was sold to Sao Paulo. He apparently wanted to return home for his remaining years.

Little Josh got about 30 minutes as well
Looked good
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 21, 2012 5:11 PM GMT up reply actions
worth spending 35mn for a player like hazard rather than 30mn for a player who's playing in a not so good league.
I disagree with the notion that just because a player comes from a "lesser" league then he is of lesser quality
On the top of my head, Vidic came from the Russian league which is of lesser quality than the French league as well.. and look how he turned out.
But the price is less preferable
If Villas-Boas thinks he could be the spark we’re missing instead of big names like Hazard, Moura, etc then I’ll gladly have him. Also, no one seems to be after Willian other than us.
by el chelsea fuerte on Jan 21, 2012 5:34 PM GMT up reply actions
TBH I have never seen him play so can't answer
But if the club rates him highly, £22-24 million shouldn’t be too much.
In terms of the type of player we need right now, we won’t get anybody for less than £30 million anyways, mostly because of the hype they get.
But I have never seen Willian play, so I’d rather wait for Stephen’s profile first :)
by el chelsea fuerte on Jan 21, 2012 5:40 PM GMT up reply actions
If we're not going for the very best
then I wouldn’t mind trying for Kev De Bruyne like we were planning, he seems more reasonably priced, no?
by ZolaDancesThrough. on Jan 21, 2012 5:14 PM GMT reply actions
I honestly don't think avb rates de bruyne...
we’ve had our chances and no one else is really in on him
I don't rate him
I have only seen him play in the champions league this year but he didn’t show anything to suggest that he would be anything more than an average squad player for me. I think the money could be better spent elsewhere. We have got into the position we are in now because after about 2006 until the last year we stopped going after top class talent and started buying mediocre players so now that the the top players of 6-7 years ago are over the hill we haven’t got the top replacements!

it would also be really cool if we had some security in the league for a
champions league spot so we could concentrate on champs league/fa cup
I asked AVB on facebook, and he says Hazard is plan A, Jovetic is plan B, and
Willian is plan C.
There you have it folks. Straight from the horse’s mouth.
I think he must have been fraped.
He’s just done a Blackberry broadcast saying he’s never heard of Hazard and chris eagles is his only transfer target, stating he has tremendous flair and ability. I know which statement i believe.

I wonder when (oh when) will the media turn its claws toward "King Kenny"
Or are they all out, having spent all their criticism-budget on AVB (and Wenger earlier in the season)?
he's untouchable, being British and all
by marc.nicholls1 on Jan 21, 2012 6:11 PM GMT up reply actions
I dont think the English media...
are afraid to turn their claws to anyone…John terry months before he takes England to the world cup, they crucified him. Maybe it works different for managers, and SAF though.

uh... try telling that to roy hodgson.. or steve mclaren

Did you mean McClaren's tenure as an England manager?
Well the England manager gets an extra stick
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
King Kenny deserved some punch into the face much earlier
for some of his awkward remarks while defending Suarez. But even then he wasn’t crucified. I really wanna know what happens if a Chelsea manager said those things. It would have been an open slaughter
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
My Thoughts
I haven’t seen much of Willian (minus a handful of UEFA games this year and last year) but basically we’d be playing Mata money + January tax of 10%. That’s not a bad deal from what I gather. I don’t think he’s as skilled as Mata but he’s better than our current options and he’s a good fit for this system. He seems like he’d be great at unlocking teams that pack the box which is what we DESPERATELY need and so maybe Willian in the Chelsea lineup is more valuable than just Willian (maybe he’s the key to unlock this team’s potential).
I think the best thing about this potential purchase is that Willian would keep us from overspending on a desperate purchase of Gotze, Hazard, or Hulk.
