Immediate reaction to the goalless draw with Norwich
It was a pretty uneventful 90 minutes today. No goals, not much in the way of chances, no real controversy, and not an overly physical game. I suppose most fans would call it boring. Clearly we all wanted 3 points from this one and left Carrow Road with just one. I'm not going to break the game down quite yet, but I'll give you my initial thoughts after spending the last two hours of my life watching a fancy yellow ball roll harmlessly around the midfield.
- Fernando Torres will get a lot of shit for this game but he wasn't bad at all. He probably should have buried that deflection that dropped at his feet, but other than that he had a fairly solid game. For the first time this season I think I really feel comfortable with Torres regularly leading the line.
- Danny Sturridge was anonymous today. We've noted it here in the past that he seems to produce more with Drogba in the center than with Torres, but he just looked bad today.
- Ashley Cole and Jose Bosingwa did nothing. They looked shaky on the defensive end (although Norwich didn't even try to take advantage) and offered nothing going forward. Ryan Bertrand needs a start as soon as possible and Brani can't be fit soon enough for my liking. The fullbacks have been such a strength at Chelsea for such a long time that I really don't know how to react to this development.
- David Luiz was very good today. At least the media can't somehow try to blame this one on him. They'll probably try anyway though.
- Romelu Lukaku looked good in his brief time on the pitch. He's still pretty raw, but you could see the issues his size and speed were causing Norwich.
- We need to figure out some way to break teams down that pack the box. We've been terrible at it all season, so there is absolutely no reason for teams to stop doing it. Maybe if we ever tried to dribble at the defense instead of passing it around the outside of the box we'd create a passing lane or two. Teaching Bosingwa to cross would help too.
I really don't want to re-watch this one but I have a feeling I really should. It's a tough game to evaluate on first glance because Norwich played so well with absolutely no aggression. I guess cheering on the Manchester sides today makes some real sense, but we really need to start finding the back of the net again and helping ourselves out. At least we didn't lose...

Things for the next game
Maybe start Ryan Bertrand? He’s seemed good enough in his brief appearances. Playing a 4-2-3-1 with Essien and Ramires in a double pivot would be effective. Mat5a is obviously most comfortable in the middle. Malouda would have to start though. and he’s rubbish.
We'll see him in the FA Cup, no doubt
So hopefully he does well there and stakes a claim. Otherwise it’s just conjecture and hope that he’s better than A.Cole.
I am not sure if Bertrand will start FA
I sure want it but he didn’t start against portsmouth so he might not start vs QPR but I hell wish he does.
I actually thought malouda had a good game
Especially in comparison to some other players who failed to bring their A-game aside from Luiz and Torres (minus the goal miss)

Maybe not the worse player on the pitch.
But he hasn’t been good enough to start for a while. His best seems to match the rest of the teams average performances. I’d like a new left winger tbh.
I wouldnt say he had a good game
while he didnt do anything wrong, he didnt really bring much, as usual, he and his build up play is slow

Malouda needs to change his attitude
Riught now he still refuses to pass to Nando. It’s painfully onvious that he wants HIS BFF back in the side and both of them offered extensions too and won’t pass to a well placed, full of WC movement, space making and clever Torres even if he/s the ONLY option and dangerous to boot. Malouda’s misplaced personal lyalties cost us three points again today and now he hurts us every time he plays with Torres he has to either be sold or told or both(or get rid of DD to rid ourselves of the French speaking cabal at the club which insists on supporting a player, in DD, who’s lost a lot of his power, pace and general ability as well as, because he won’t get the extension of two years which would make him feel biger than the club.
I was, sadly, a little upset when I heard that Didier was happy to say he’d stay til summer(how will he ever cope on £160,000 a week!)but , actually, wasn’t HAPPY about it at all as he will sulk til June and only play in games where he scores early and the team’s set up only to serve his needs both tactically and mentally. He isn’t the future, palsya alot worse for the team than Torres and has a disruptive element supporting him in the squad that must be undermined and shipped out. Lamps, oddly, also finds himself rarely picking out torres for fear Torres may find the goals to make HIS place redundant shor sightedly ignoring the fact he coukld be supplying the bullets.
In short there’s way too little selflessness at the Bridge(Torres and Mata apart)and too many players wanting to turn back a clock that they failed to manage last term when they were younger. AVB failing for s second window to shift out enough of the disruptive elder statesmen who, mainly, refuse to pull together towards a new way of coping ith the rest of the younger squad members. AVB is also guilty of failing to have the balls to play Ryan Bertrand to offer Cole a much needed rest. Ashley’s now incapable of attacking or defending to anything near a normal Cole level and will only risk injuring himself if a game off cannot be organised soon-as form falls apart. Without his forward runs Mata is stuck wide too often for starters and Ash isn’t up to it at either end right now. Same was true of Raul, Lamps and Josh and now Josh has gone Lamps has got injured and Raul even safer in his knowledge he will almost alwayts play despite being the worst “creative” midfielder in the EPL this season. If AVB won’t trust the young back up there’s little to make those unde performing and npig headed “first teamers” inti even trying.
That’s why we get a laissez-faire performance from all but our young mids week in and week ou. It’s why JT and Ash are too tired and unrested and it’s why Lamps is both injured AND why he hasn’t bothered doing anything to make himself more of a team player to make his career last longer a la Bergkamp or Giggs or Barnes. He’s not using his brain and cannot any longer create AND score those latre run goals and settling for JUST the goals is killing us as a side, sadly.
We were terrible again today, DS was selfish, lazy and rusty while Torres was srtil one of the ones actually seen to be trying but ONLY home boy Mata managed anything lie=ke Chelsea quality throughout. We either get shot of a couple more and do it now or this malaise of “player kniws best” will ruin AVB’s rebuild for ever. Sell the oldies who won’t fall in line, even if we’re left short of bodies do it now and get in a player or two of Chelsea class regardless of cup tied status too. Getting fourth is paramount and the vitriaol within the camp needs pruning and taming and some penetration adding to help Mata and Danny and Torres.
Few bright lights today except I felt Norwich were pretty woeful for a home team ninth in the Prem but will get praise for playing it safe-they ought not when we’re there for the taking and I was let down by the total ambition drain they became and thought they might well defend deep but really set up for quick breaks but they just defended. SAdly, Chelsea didn’t do much of what I’d call real attacking either. Too slow in the build up, too low a block ourselves and one tired and one useless FB meant Mata and DS stuxk too wide all game and outr of harm’s way purely because our manager won’t trust a youth product for ONE game against average Prem sides. Ash needs a rest before we hurt him and AVB is bottling this massively.

It would be wrong,
for Chels to take a completely "out with the old, in with the new approach’. Whilst i agree that the young lads need to be trusted more and given more game time to improve, it would be wrong to throw away all the old boys. We struggled after releasing a load of them a couple of seasons ago (ballack, belletti etc) and although they were not stars for chelsea anymore indivdually, the experience and winning mentality is important for us to stay near the top. We need to EASE the youngsters in more, with the addition of a new signing or two at RB and LW, and bed them in without the experienced players. I didnt think mata was that great today btw.

And again
it might have been asked very often may I ask you from where you get the evidence Malouda “refuses” to pass to Torres? As refusing would mean he chose so deliberately. And also that he does so because of idolizing Didier Drogba; Malouda playing better with Drogba is no coincidence because those two know each other for quite a while on the pitch – something that cannot be said of Torres and Malouda – but claiming Malouda refuses to pass to Torres on purpose, out of need to idolize DIdier Drogba, I find insulting
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
plus
Im sure malouda has played with many a player he doesnt get on with (not saying he doesnt like torres) before, and as he is a top level professional, im sure he’s not so immature as to not pass to torres for such reasons.
by ZolaDancesThrough. on Jan 21, 2012 4:52 PM GMT up reply actions
Agreed..
….some seem to forget these guys get paid to do this. It’s not like pub league where you might not like players on your team, so you don’t pass to them etc.. This is professional football for god sakes. If he were deliberately doing this, he wouldn’t be getting much playing time after this now would he?
And plus again this guy has no proof what so ever that this is the case. I mean unless dude is the one taking the jock straps to the friggin laundry. We will never know.

also
“the issues his size and speed were causing Norwich some issues”
And from what I've seen
He’s good. I don;t know why he isn’t playing more.
AVB doesn't trust
any youngster he didn’t personally chase to play a single game in the league ever.. Had some other manaer bought Romeu and chased him we’d not see him either but Josh, Ryan, Hutch, Chalobah et al just won’t ever get their chance even when it’s been common sense to give either or both a game at times this season when Ash has been, like now, out of form and so tired he risks injury and when, game after game neither Raul nor Lamps even TRIES to create for our CF. Josh had a less settled and less creatuve midfield to break into at Chelsea than at Swansea where theirs WORKS. Why didn’t AVB give him a single, real league game, chance to start?
While he won’t we risk missing out and injuring great players.

Do we have any promising young RB's coming through
I watched Hutchinson play there in the double winning season but i presume he’s not ready to be a chelsea starter at the moment and i can’t think of anyone else off my head. We need a striker that can nick alll kinds of goal, and lots of them, although im happy to continue with Torres.
by ZolaDancesThrough. on Jan 21, 2012 3:29 PM GMT reply actions
Hmm yeh i suppose
but hasn’t he been excellent at CB this season, and if he’s really developing as a CB i would be reluctant to change that, unless im mistaken? Plus he won’t be ready for a couple seasons at the least im sure.

More tha that
I like Kalas best at RB(he’s a younger Brana with amazing potential)ans we also have the talented Kane playing RB for under age England and the reserves VERY well indeed. Hutch, also, solid there and cannot be a lot worse than Bos, can he? I’d say Kalas could do it now even though he’s been CB at Vitesse nobody knows if he’s going to be a CB for sure and looks more RB than anything to me. Good too. But AVB won’t evertrust the kid so he might aqs well move imho. He doesn’t speak Portuguese which AVB seems to favour.

In this day and age
When opportunities are presented to you you have to be clinical. Torres just isn’t that. The final ball weren’t plentiful today but you need a striker who can bury the few opportunities that fall to you in the modern game.
Perhaps Sturridge isn’t wrong in wanting to play the 9?
Somehow I could argue that Torres had a good game
He is still so hesitant to shoot, Never tries to dribble past the last few defenders, instead he is content with assists…Don’t know whether he has been instructed this way by AVB or what ???
Cheers,
Rohi D
I agree
In the first half where he was put through by mata, he was hesitant to run on to it and let it run across his body, so had to settle for an attempted assist to studge, but his cross got cut out. Apart from the obvious chance, he had a good game.

He was getting no service again
I would be frustrated too. It’s a shame Lamps got injured so early, I had a feeling he was having a good game, and could have provided that needed pass.
Does anyone know the status of his injury?
I think I heard AVB say...
it seemed like a small tear or something, but don’t quote me on that as my attention was elsewhere. dont know if its serious or not though
by ZolaDancesThrough. on Jan 21, 2012 5:55 PM GMT up reply actions
I don't know if it is a confidence thing or an overthinking it thing
Like most, I wish I understand.. it is my biggest source of frustration with him. I almost think he is more afraid of missing than he is of not scoring. Does that make sense? I just want him to go through some match where he can do nothing but shoot.. just shoot, when it’s right, when its wrong, when its impossible…. just shoot a shit ton. At some point enough misses will maybe just get it out of him and get him over that and maybe even with all that shooting, he’ll get back into the rhythm and bang a few in.
I mean, I dunno what shooting practice looks like for them, but whatever I see on Chelsea TV in the background hardly looks near the intensity of a game situation- it would be nice if they could just bring in a team of 7 or so non-Chelsea players and just have Torres have to go up against them after practice, all on his own. Enough of that, and maybe he’ll eventually get it. Maybe eventually add in the wingers (honestly, a few of them could use work too.. even Sturridge would benefit from some chipping and passing with them even if he does have the best finishing rate).
Ugh.. that was way more than I wanted to type. Before I know it I’ve got a novel in the works.
To me, his problems with positioning and looking a little off the pace...
…were much worse than his unfortunate chance. He probably should have done better at creating chances for himself.

I wish they'd just let him stay forward.
I get the feeling a lot of people like that he helps out all over the pitch and such but i’d like him to be selfish and just stay up top throughout most of the game. When he starts scoring again he can help out all over the pitch.
Yeah...agree on this
He was defending deep at times…anyways the commentators praised him for that LOL ….
Cheers,
Rohi D
Are you referring to this game or his whole chelsea career..
because i agree he didn’t seem willing to create chances for himself when he first came, but i think that changed and he started making runs, but to me, he was making the wrong runs and not really giving himself a chance. I do think he is trying now to ‘make his own luck’ but it still doesnt seem to be working. He must know the real reason why he’s not the same player, or maybe he had 2 brilliant seasons somehow, and fooled us into thinking he was a great player.
by ZolaDancesThrough. on Jan 21, 2012 3:57 PM GMT up reply actions
And not forcing the keeper to make a save.
All of his efforts for the most part don’t even make it on net. There was the one in the first half that Ruddy tipped wide but for the most part his problem is composure and concentration. 5 ft in front of goal you have to hit the net i’m sorry.
on your last point, stephen
i think this is where having a potent counter attack is necessary. if teams want to pack the box, we shouldn’t give them opportunity. there was a moment when it seemed like we were on the break late in the game, except sturridge pulled it back. that was incredibly frustrating.
they're not going to pack the box when they have the ball, obviously
we did have opportunities to counter in this match. in fact there are chances counter in almost any match, whether it comes from high pressure or deep defending. either way, we have had no counter attack all season and it’s killing us
by marc.nicholls1 on Jan 21, 2012 4:14 PM GMT up reply actions
Teams that score regularly on counters either get relegated or they win the title
I don’t think we’re doing either of those things this season… :P
I'm not saying we should do that regularly
but it should be something that we CAN do. so far we’ve shown a sheer inability to counter at all. it just leaves us with fewer options in terms of attack
by marc.nicholls1 on Jan 21, 2012 4:19 PM GMT up reply actions
Remember the counter involving Sturridge, Toress and Mata
Sturridge passed the ball to Mata…whose shot was blocked at near post.
Sturridge could have passed it to Toress but didn’t.

My take
Torres was okay in the first half, and terrible in the second. His passing was horrible and mucked up his only chances to score. The few times the team got some good crosses into the box no one was there. Lampard would have been(!).
I still felt good about the game because Terry and Luiz were more than outstanding, especially DL. While it’s embarrassing that Chelsea is the first team unable to score on Norwich this season, the Canaries do score quite a lot and it’s an accomplishment for Chelsea to shut them.
I think Cole is only bad because of all the work he’s had to do. I agree with getting him some rest.
Bosingwa was clearly the worst player on the team. I’d rather he just shoot from 25 yards rather than try to cross at this point (similar to why I don’t mind having Meireles take some shots from out there….who else is going to score???).
Sturridge was bad, Mata looks tired but played fairly well.
Agreed!
This is the first time in quite a while that our entire front three were ineffectual. Mata’s passing wasn’t close to its best and Sturridge struggled to get himself involved mostly because of Bosingwa being so terrible but also because he kept on coming inside instead of providing width.
remember in the first half
when sturridge was streaking down the right flank and looked like he was in position to play a cross, except he pulled it back onto his left? i mean, is his right foot THAT ineffective?

Remember Sturridge is used to playing centrally so to ask him to pick out perfect passes with his right is still something that is evolving. He’s been able to do it though

You are pissed about Malouda shooting there??
I know he should have done better but in the end you just tyr whatever you can and he did.
Yeah, that was a horrendous shot
But almost any player in the world would’ve tried that. Wide open at the top of the box – you take that one every time.
at least take a touch
not a single player within 15 yards, set yourself, then shoot. give yourself a decent chance man
by ZolaDancesThrough. on Jan 21, 2012 5:38 PM GMT up reply actions
Easy to make the right choice in hindsight
If he takes a touch and someone closes him down quicker than expected, then we rag on that. He had the confidence to take it first time; I’m ok with that. Certainly better than the more commong long-shot scenario where we pass the ball around the midfield, get bored and blast it at goal or into an opposing defender (cough*Meireles*cough)
I am sure the guys dont have the best idea
of how much time they have on the clock either. I’ve seen many a poor decision and desperate play in stoppage time… even from Chelsea (for some reason, that weird Torres botched-shot-thing from half-way down the field at the first Sunderland match, or whatever it was, comes to mind… shudder).
In a way, I guess that is what lends itself to the excitement at the end of a match. If I recall playing in those types of games, as a footballer, it is one of the more agonizing things… when will that damn whistle be blown?
How anyone can say Torres wasn't bad is beyond me.
Strikers are supposed to score goals. If you’re not doing that than at least provide space for those who can i.e Sturridge. if you can’t do that than at least hold up the ball! in a 4-3-3 the striker HAS to be able to win balls and hold it up Torres did none of that. What he did do was hesitate in the box and miss two glorious opportunities
If Daniel Sturridge had the exact same game in the middle nobody would have called it poor
The perception of Torres is clouding most people’s judgement
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 21, 2012 4:17 PM GMT up reply actions
Not true at all...
How do you rate your central striker? what constitutes a good game from him? Being hesitant in the box and missing a 5fter can’t be considered a good all around performance. What makes you think it was bright?
What constitutes solid?
What does a striker need to do to be considered solid in your books?
Bingo..
…..all you hear all game is about how Torres sucks and this and that. Proof of that was evident today with today’s broadcast crew. That is really all they talked about, well that and just how horrible Chelsea is…gave me a headache.

How can you say Torres doesn't create space when he does?
He drifts to the flanks to allow Mata or the midfield to storm up the middle. It’s not his fault the rest of the team couldn’t make that final through ball he needs to get the ball in the box like he wants.
By the way...
….when other fans make fun of Torres I tell them to go to hell. But since he’s ours we can do it.

After the game, I kept thinking
How can Lukaku be so big and still so fast? Damn!
1970 - 1984 - 2010
"Vamos Fluzão, vamos ganhar
Eu sou do clube tantas vezes campeão!
Vim pra torcer, vim pra gritar
E por você a vida inteira vou cantar!"
It was really odd overall.
I was encouraged by Lukaku, in that he seemed to be much fitter. I remember reading a Belgian site at the time of the transfer that was concerned by his weight. He had one header attempt early on where the total vertical was larger than the sum of every jump he had in his two previous PL appearances.
Chelsea just played too slow in possession. Stephen’s right in blaming the fullbacks, which is hardly a new development. Bosingwa hasn’t even been good in attack for months.
Honestly I laughed with joy when I saw that header
He’s been so tame to attack the ball in the air and now he’s seems more driven and stronger

I like this initial reaction
Stephen- you make sound statements, and I have a big appreciation for that, especially after the emotional match threads (myself included on that).
I woke up late and was distracted for part of the match, so I am going to watch it again now and see if that changes my perception on things at all.
I lied
Forgot about the USMNT match tonight. If you thought Chelsea’s finishing had problems! And Venezuela has gotten very aggressive in the second half. Other things I’ve learned: Brek Shea is loved by Klinsmann and Benny Feilhaber is not, when Spanish-speaking announcers say “Big Red Jeff Larentowicz” it sounds probably as funny as when English-speaking announcers say any Spanish name, this referee seemed almost opposed to giving out cards until the end…. and well, we finally got a goal as I type this at the very end.
I think The media should pressure AVB again!
He works really good under pressure! remember the 4 win streak against Man City! Yeah! give those stupid headers article…. RA is preparing to fire AVB
Btw I only saw the 2nd half, seriously last 65 mins or so was a good run for Chelsea! I can’t believe none of us scored!! Up to the Chels
Ha
I’ve wondered about that. I’ve thought that maybe we’re the team that somehow performs better under media scrutiny.
Lukaku looked better than Torres.
In his 10 minutes he atleast beat one guy. Something Torres spectacularly fails at, in fact he is slower than most defenders, every match now he gets one chance that he starts in the clear but the defender catches up. We need to cut our losses, this was another shevchenko moment that will fuck up our financial fair play until he is moved on. The sooner the better.
Swede that like the Houston Texans and Chelsea FC
