Wolverhampton vs Chelsea: Injury CRISIS! gamethread
Chelsea 11: Cech, Bosingwa, Luiz, Terry, Cole, Romeu, Meireles, Lampard, Ramires, Mata, Torres
Subs: Turnbull, Ferriera, Hutchinson, Bertrand, Chlobah, McEachran, Lukaku
Wolverhampton 11: Hennessey; Stearman, Johnson, Berra, Ward; Hammill, Henry, Frimprong, Forde; Edwards; Doyle
Subs: Elokobi, Foley, De Vries, Hunt, Jarvis, Ebanks-Blake, Fletcher
I'd guess we're seeing Chelsea use a 4-2-3-1 variation in this one with Wolves playing 4-4-1-1. The injury and illness bug has most definitely struck as you can tell by looking at our bench today, so hopefully we fing the back of the net early and often in this one. Have at it...

Explain this
Why does AVB not play Lampard with Drogba and not play Torres without Lampard? Can you explain this? Because I don’t get it.

Today is kind of aa freak injury lineup I think
It seems the only time he uses either in the starting 11 is when he’s out of other options

I can't get my head around this lineup.
Everything about it screams “4-4-1-1” to me.

I'm just surprised Ramires is being asked to play right wing.

For all the whiners about youth
Since AVB has used ALL his subs in ALL his games, we are bound to see at least a couple youngsters in this one.
And funnily
I can’t see this on the frontpage itself … without DPeezy’s thread I would never have found this

it is sort of a comment on the whole team, that Nando was the best…. but to be fair, Torres has actually been trying… not just looking better than others based on their anonymity

Wow, the boos are so strong, letters are raining onto the pitch.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
Yeah, that was not good
but we knew that about him already
He was the main culprit losing possession
which finally led to that set piece – wasn’t he?
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
After around 10 passes solely between Terry, Luiz, Romeu and Cech all around our
own area and a clearance from Cech that didn’t even reach the halfway line how can you claim that was all Torres’ fault, are you saying none of our 3 other central midfielders could get open?
I'm not
I’m a Torres Apologist… I was actually commenting that yes, you were right, he went down. I couldnt recall if he misplaced a pass.
I forgot to put "Torres Apologist" in quotes

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
I'm not sure where you read
where I was about fault or not – I just said he lost possession and this led to the dangerous set piece situation. I’d say the same if it was any other Chelsea player *hmpf
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
But if it was any other player it still wouldn't be his fault after an appaling
display of possession.
Oh yes
When Fernando Torres didn’t touch his ball he couldn’t have lost possession. I get that
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Or the more infinitely likely,
WHY THE FUCK did we have 10+ passes outside our own area and not even attempt to get beyond our own half? We were begging Wolves to take the ball off us and WHY THE FUCK can’t Cech clear his OWN FUCKING HALF. What about where were the midfielders to give the defenders an attempt to get the ball likely and why did Torres have to collect possesion deep on the LW, when he has been our most CREATIVE force up front?
Maybe
He did lose the ball or passed poorly, but not sure if that challenge was on him… I have to go back and watch
ANOTHER free header, this time headed wide.

Downright awful, and not because of injuries. Chelsea’s set piece defending is abysmal and they’ve let Wolves suck them into their style of game.

Lukaku up front with Fernando? I'm not sure being more central is the answer. Width please.
Bertrand for Lamps/Meireles, move Ram to the middle. If still 0-0 by 70th minute, put in McEachran for Lamps/Meireles.
Bertrand can actually give a decent cross.
I'm not sure we can isolate the problem to the midfield
I’d like a wide player to push Mata central in the 4-2-3-1, behind Torres.
Bertrand can play left wing in FM…
To clarify
Some out left, so that we have someone there to balance out Mata’s central position.
Lampard is no left winger.

Have a sudden feeling I want to hold up a
Frank Lampard is a legend! transparency
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
An English NFL watcher?
I’m surprised and impressed.
Also...
I am not in Pittsburgh but totally will take the Stealers. Broncos can go shove it for not giving GB a second consecutive Superbowl in recent years. Maybe this year GB will change that.
Hopefully...
They’re less objectionable than most of the teams in the playoffs this year. And who can dislike Rodgers after this.
I’m still bitter that my Eagles didn’t get in, though. I think relying on Mark Sanchez to be good in order to keep your playoff hopes alive should be recognised as an official form of torture. Not sure how Jets fans cope tbh.
Well, I am not sold on Rodgers yet...
I don’t hate him, but while GB is my team, I don’t love him. It’s a curious thing.
Yesterday wasn't that good for cementing my love for Rodgers.
I mean, if the backup can still throw six touchdowns, a lot of it’s the team.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
That's part of their appeal...
So many teams are just carried by a good QB cough Colts cough it’s refreshing to see a franchise that have actually managed to build an offense that’s good across the board (except for RB and, to an extent, OL). Shame their defense is terrible, though.
My liking of Rodgers is that he doesn’t take himself too seriously (as evidenced by the State Farm commercial and the video I linked to above)
Agreed
It is good to see that the team is pretty solid and have confidence now. I could say some things about the Brett Favre era, but, well, I am a hopeless Brett Favre fan, even with everything he does to try to destroy it.
To me, though, his commercial is really just what you get from star QB’s here. With that, he’s well on his way to filling Favre’s shoes ;)
Awh bless
I really hoped that the Colts would pick him up this season after Manning went down; would’ve been hilarious.
As for the Packers being a solid team now, I think you’ll have your work cut out for a 3rd straight Super Bowl next season because the Eagles are gonna win it once they draft a MLB and stop making stupid errors.
I love how you're assuming the Packers are going to win this year.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
Oh, the Colts....
even I didnt see that coming. Part way through the season some rumors were floating about and I had to laugh. The sad part is that he could probably still go out there and play better than whatever backup was there.
Nah, NFL's the easy one. Games usually start at 6 or 9pm.
Baseball’s the awkward one, with games starting every night at 3am. Hockey’s just a pain in the arse because I can never remember when the team’s playing.
As the great Joe Posnanski says
I never argue with people who say that baseball is boring, because baseball is boring. And then, suddenly, it isn’t. And that’s what makes it great.
Yeah, he's got a point
I just can’t bring myself to sit through all of the boring until the interesting bit happens. I’m more an instant gratification kind of guy :p
I can only watch in person
and even then I spend half the time on my phone, talking to others, or going to fetch beer.
More that I assumed most Brits hate the idea of American Football
or at least all the ones I have met shun it.
I'm a n00b on this
but Rugby to me looks closer to American Football than many other sports played on a lawn. Not that they’re the same though, of course
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
American football is descended from Rugby League, which is descended from...
…Rugby Union, which the more familiar Rugby code.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
Well I always was suspicious
regarding that shape of “ball” that it can’t be coincidence
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
I never watched Rugby so closely to see that
just came with it roughly in contact while I was still at school ;)
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
They do have lots of similarities
American Football is certainly derived from it, which may well be how it got its name. Funny how that works, and why some people get so mad that we call that football and the other soccer, and both really probably are a result of our ties to England :)
Well yes...
It’s derived from Rugby Football (to give it its correct title) so it’s well deserving of the name in that respect.
You might be shocked at how pissed people in International circles
get at me for calling it “football”. Like I went back in time and determined we would call it that so that when we finally adopted to Association Football, that we’d have to call it a nickname. People attack you quite personally about it… funny.
meaning anyone that is not American, really
I’ve got friends here that are from Europe… or when I talk to anyone abroad.
Oh ...
because everytime I read circle I often associate them with .. elite networks and meet-ups rather than the usual “internet scum” :D
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Well, now that there are Google+ circles
Internet scum is taking over! haha, kidding.
That's a big big
circle … LOL :P
Well usually the ordinary “internet scum” aren’t part in “elite networks” (what I always think of when I read circle) but who knows?
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
To be honest, I have the same issues on NFL forums
If I mistakenly draw parallels to football and just get a lot of confused responses.
I can imagine
there you would have to call it soccer, ha
Three hours.... just 3!
hahah… I never thought about that as being the reason. Interesting. I always figured it was the padding and so much stop and go. However, I like thinking about tactics much more in that chess-match style.
That's also part of it, but most of the people who bitch about the pads have never really watched the game.
Like the Americans whose main gripe with soccer is that it’s low-scoring.
Low scoring is one
but folks that watch Hockey would really be fine with it. People that watch basketball would appreciate the flow of the game too, but not the points. I mean, its not like American football is high scoring for many more reasons than that you get so many points for a particular accomplishment.
The bigger gripes for Americans trying to watch football is 1) wrong calls and no review system and 2) diving.
Yeah, I can see that if you've grown up watching guys playing through concussions
Barcelona must be pretty hard to take.
Oh... it is dreadful
plus… I like some action. Now… I know Barca scores a lot, but I often walk away from watching their games because they will pass some 29834092380825 times before they shoot. It drives me mad. I think that comes from my sporting background as well :)
On the review system
You’ve got to (well maybe not if you’re a Packers fan) feel sorry for the Lions yesterday with that TD and no challenges left.
I would’ve thought that if it was close the ref would call it in and then get the automatic booth review to double check.
I love it
It’s somewhat awesome. I like how there is more time for thinking about tactics etc between plays, whereas in football you pretty much set the guys out and then have to try and change things on the fly by just shouting at guys from the sidelines.
It takes a long time, but there’s a good reason and so I don’t mind too much.
And it’s an awesome sport, so it’s all good :-)
Oh, I just posted about the tactics above
yes… that is what makes it a great sport. And while they dont really do “captains”, I like that you have sort of a clear general of the field in your QB.
Also... have you watched the college game yet?
To me, it is far superior to the NFL.. at least in a good season. This last season was strange, but the same could be said for the NFL.
No, I haven't yet
I keep meaning to pick a team at random and then support them for evermore (much like I did with the Eagles). I’ll do it next season, I think. It’s a bit more difficult to watch the games, though – NFL Gamepass is my friend :-)
Gonna give you one
Ohio State. We need more support right now with our coaching situation. But, otherwise, easily the bestest college football team ever. (this is not an unbiased post).
It also means you get to hate on Michigan
probably the best rivalry in the sport.
Based on no prior knowledge of the league structure etc
I need to ask a few questions:
1. Are they any good? I’m after a team that’s generally around the level of Liverpool – not much of a bandwagon to be jumping on, but there’s not much danger of them getting relegated or whatever.
2. Are their games exciting? I get bored easily
3. Do they have any players I might’ve heard of?
4. Do they get to play against other good teams? I don’t want a team that’s just the best in a bad division.
This is basically the logic I used to arbitrarily choose the Eagles a few years back – obviously worked out well in the long term :p
They're the Liverpool of the Big Ten.
But like the 1980’s Liverpool, not current Liverpool. Wisconsin, and I’m not just saying that, are pretty consistently good but not fabulous.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
'The Big Ten'?
That sounds pretty good…
Is the ‘Big’ part related to their ability, size or just trying to make them sound cooler?
It's the traditionally top teams of the Midwest region.
There were originally like 6 or 8 teams, then it eventually became 10 for a long time. They kept the name even after they became 11, and now 12. Ironically, the Big 12 has 10 teams, and the Big Ten has 12.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
Wisconsin
has been pretty good lately… if I recall. Didnt see as much this last season though. Too heartbroken over the loss of Tressel to deal with watching this year.
They've been good, but they probably won't continue.
They’re in the Rose Bowl tonight, if you can find it.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
Well,
historically, we are it. There aint no such thing as relegation here, so you are in luck! Not a bandwagon kind of team because we’ve been solid throughout time, and traditionally we kill Michigan. Problem is that we had a coaching and player issue, because of the one thing that really disrupts the sport… the NCAA (think the FA).
2) I like their games… recently we’ve had very Vick style quarterbacks, which is weird, because I dont tend to love the runners in the NFL, but it makes for a crazy exciting game in college. The last couple have been known for scoring while running more than for their passing. And their last match just before the Michigan game… senior day, I think… that one had me on the edge. The Michigan game was also crazy, from what I gather.
3) AJ Hawk on GB game from there, umm, lots of linesmen and such… some of our running backs… Eddie George is our hero from the 90’s. This might be better… there is a section on players in the NFL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio_State_Buckeyes_football Troy Smith got the Heisman a few years back.
4) The Big Ten is a good division… I mean, it isn’t up there with the Pac-10 or South at the moment, but it is sort of a traditionally great division and never lets down. Think the Nebraskas and Penn States… generally good teams.
The downside?
We now have a coach I loathe. I really hate him. Hate Urban Meyer. He will probably bring success, but he is scum. I hope for some magical return that brings back Tressel.
But, maybe I can accept Meyer if he can manage to not make OSU another Gators.. he is not free of scandal himself, and I’d take Tressel’s trespasses over his.
That said… should be an exciting next season! Sure that Meyer will improve recruiting… people wanna play under him and be the next Tebow, lol.
Sorry.. that was my rant at just remembering he was the coach
It should be a decent year. Unfortunately, can’t have a bowl. The NCAA has pretty much slaughtered OSU for players selling memorabilia a few seasons ago.
*shudder*
Don’t like Tebow. People seem to be missing the fact that he’s a product of a good defense and is actually a pretty mediocre QB
I do hate him for that
I felt the same of Brady though, but I guess sometimes Brady can be good (that hurts to say… as he was a Michigan QB and so I hate him too).
so torres sets up another goalscoring opportunity, why
our other players can’t pass like our striker remains a mystery.
Old Faithful comes up trumps. Kudos to Torres for the perfectly weighted pass.
Now if only he could shoot…

Now it makes me curious
that I wanna check on FanFiction.net if there was a Juan Mata Fanfic
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
No... dont.
I once stumbled on a FanFiction of my favorite musician back in college and was scarred for life. That shit is whack.
If I wanna read good stories
then FanFiction.net would be the last address I’d type into my browser. No – just curious – I’m the type who shake my head about fanfics on gaming characters, but writing fanfics about real existing persons certainly tops that … outright freaking!
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Scary there is a website for it
It shouldnt be encouraged! Could you imagine being a celebrity of any sort and finding that stuff? I’d crawl into a saferoom and never come out.
Oh to be totally honest
FanFiction.net isn’t a place designed for fanfics on real existing persons. I believe it was started because people wrote stuff on gaming characters they found interesting and wanted to share it with others. However they might have fanfics of real existing persons … I never really checked (because I don’t wanna know what people have in minds with regards to the likes of C.Ron and F.Torres, considering most fanfic authours are female …)
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
On a more general note
maybe it’s the same crux with Torres and Lampard – I should not focus myself so much on their designed role, CF, AM, CM … but concentrate my verdict more on the actual outcome, because maybe this is a hindrance why I loathe both of them here and there

holiday weekend… lots of places in the US get today off because the holiday fell on a Sunday.
It's Bank Holiday in Britain too, I think.

this is the only Chelsea site I use so…

What kind of unrest?
I mean I can understand that it can be uncomfortable to visit some certain Arsenal sites or communities – I do avoid some Chelsea sites myself unless I’m terribly bored and want hilarious entertainment (flamewars can be fun if you’re not involved) – but I rather flame in Chelsea forums then posting in … say … Spuds or Pools forums
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
That's also why I started posting here
because it’s relatively free of flamewars, haters and trolls. We don’t need to get at each other’s throats just because we disagree

yeah a bit...
there are places on earth where ppl still use dial up connections…unfortunately I an one of those ;)
Cheers,
Rohi D
OK when you have a slow connection
and the first time you load the image surely it slows down everything alright
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
It still slows it down once it's stored in your browser's cache
and you have enough memory space? Kinda curious to me
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
The constant loading of the images taxes both your connection (initially) and your computer (as it plays over and over).
Those days are far behind!
I actually missed that game then watched it later because I love to suffer.

oh yes it would

No I'm at home
But I’m watching the match if you were wondering. Arsenal are way.
by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 2, 2012 6:07 PM GMT up reply actions
Yes, the internet connection I got
but if you have enough memory space and CPU power it doesn’t matter too much – depending on the resolution of the gif, of course. Even most vintage systems from 2003 and upward can handle them smoothly … of course when the internet connection is slow to download the thing it doesn’t matter how much power your system has. The slowest component slows down everything
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Javascript slows down this site much more
than the little gifs as far as I can tell; of course gifs don’t make it any better
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
I think it's pretty much certain he'll be on loan, but...
…probably not at Swansea.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
I'd rather see him here staying with us
but considering the circumstances, a loan makes much more sense then staying on the bench in the basket with us
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Yes...Playing time matters
I personally wish he moves to Swansea…They play good passing football that we are aspiring of right now
Cheers,
Rohi D
They signed another player in his position.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
I've heard Bolton are back in pole position.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
He probably won't be going to Swansea.
They signed someone else already.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
Bummer
if not Bolton, I wanted Swansea… they want him in a PL team and they wouldn’t go anywhere above mid-table.
I think Bolton is favourite again.

Hmm
will be interesting to see since it aint part of the Cahill deal.
He'll be starting next game
At least that’s what I hope.

typical wolves
the game turned out the way i actually expected.trust wolves, they’ll always give u a match full of suspense. This match further outlines the value of lampard—-from his pass to Torres until d goal (legend).

Things definitely got better then
the first half was terrifying. I was sure a man would go off.
Torres stats for this match
#CFC Torres 90’ | Pass Comp 36/39 92% | Touches 57 Loss Pos 3 | Chances Created 2 | Successful Dribbles 3/4 | Shots(On) 3(0) |
by el chelsea fuerte on Jan 2, 2012 5:27 PM GMT reply actions
Those stats support what we saw here as well
He played much less like a center forward and much more like false-9.
I'd got with the former
They may have talked about it on the training ground / dressing room (drop deeper to be more involved), but it was probably more of a case of something that they found out early that worked well against the Wolves defense so they kept doing it.
The Torres/Lampard switching was very nice and in that sense reminded me of some of Frank’s best games.
It was far too easy.
Who’d have thought Tintin sucked at defending?
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
Why did Wolves have to be good against us but not you
them’s the breaks
by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 2, 2012 5:59 PM GMT up reply actions
They really should have a goal by now
Zamora was wide open in the middle, but Riise’s cross was off by a yard.
And now Ruiz should’ve done better.
Shit
Just looked up to see that Zamora was allowed to play!
Hope they can enter!
They had a game like that some time ago… was it the Spurs? I think…
It's been all Fulham and now Arsenal are down to ten men.
Djourou brings down Zamora on the edge of the box, second yellow.
Way to pack that box, Arsenal
thought that was the very thing they hated…
Correct!
I’ve never so badly wanted Fulham to perform!
