Wolverhampton vs Chelsea: Injury CRISIS! gamethread

Chelsea 11: Cech, Bosingwa, Luiz, Terry, Cole, Romeu, Meireles, Lampard, Ramires, Mata, Torres

Subs: Turnbull, Ferriera, Hutchinson, Bertrand, Chlobah, McEachran, Lukaku

Wolverhampton 11: Hennessey; Stearman, Johnson, Berra, Ward; Hammill, Henry, Frimprong, Forde; Edwards; Doyle

Subs: Elokobi, Foley, De Vries, Hunt, Jarvis, Ebanks-Blake, Fletcher

I'd guess we're seeing Chelsea use a 4-2-3-1 variation in this one with Wolves playing 4-4-1-1. The injury and illness bug has most definitely struck as you can tell by looking at our bench today, so hopefully we fing the back of the net early and often in this one. Have at it...

Explain this

Why does AVB not play Lampard with Drogba and not play Torres without Lampard? Can you explain this? Because I don’t get it.

Today is kind of aa freak injury lineup I think

It seems the only time he uses either in the starting 11 is when he’s out of other options

I can't get my head around this lineup.

Everything about it screams “4-4-1-1” to me.

For all the whiners about youth

Since AVB has used ALL his subs in ALL his games, we are bound to see at least a couple youngsters in this one.

So, we're starting this one in the same form, I see

Dudes… it is a New Year… please treat it like one! I want them to have a training session solely devoted to accurate passing, lol.

After around 10 passes solely between Terry, Luiz, Romeu and Cech all around our

I'm not sure where you read

where I was about fault or not – I just said he lost possession and this led to the dangerous set piece situation. I’d say the same if it was any other Chelsea player *hmpf

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Jan 2, 2012 3:44 PM GMT up reply actions

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Jan 2, 2012 3:52 PM GMT up reply actions

Or the more infinitely likely,

WHY THE FUCK did we have 10+ passes outside our own area and not even attempt to get beyond our own half? We were begging Wolves to take the ball off us and WHY THE FUCK can’t Cech clear his OWN FUCKING HALF. What about where were the midfielders to give the defenders an attempt to get the ball likely and why did Torres have to collect possesion deep on the LW, when he has been our most CREATIVE force up front?

by Toosy_13 on Jan 2, 2012 3:57 PM GMT up reply actions

Downright awful, and not because of injuries. Chelsea’s set piece defending is abysmal and they’ve let Wolves suck them into their style of game.

Lukaku up front with Fernando? I'm not sure being more central is the answer. Width please.

Bertrand for Lamps/Meireles, move Ram to the middle. If still 0-0 by 70th minute, put in McEachran for Lamps/Meireles.

Bertrand can actually give a decent cross.

Also...

I am not in Pittsburgh but totally will take the Stealers. Broncos can go shove it for not giving GB a second consecutive Superbowl in recent years. Maybe this year GB will change that.

by alynne4307 on Jan 2, 2012 5:01 PM GMT up reply actions

Hopefully...

They’re less objectionable than most of the teams in the playoffs this year. And who can dislike Rodgers after this.

I’m still bitter that my Eagles didn’t get in, though. I think relying on Mark Sanchez to be good in order to keep your playoff hopes alive should be recognised as an official form of torture. Not sure how Jets fans cope tbh.

Well, I am not sold on Rodgers yet...

by alynne4307 on Jan 2, 2012 5:29 PM GMT up reply actions

Yesterday wasn't that good for cementing my love for Rodgers.

I mean, if the backup can still throw six touchdowns, a lot of it’s the team.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 2, 2012 5:30 PM GMT up reply actions

That's part of their appeal...

So many teams are just carried by a good QB cough Colts cough it’s refreshing to see a franchise that have actually managed to build an offense that’s good across the board (except for RB and, to an extent, OL). Shame their defense is terrible, though.

My liking of Rodgers is that he doesn’t take himself too seriously (as evidenced by the State Farm commercial and the video I linked to above)

by deg0ey on Jan 2, 2012 5:36 PM GMT up reply actions

Agreed

It is good to see that the team is pretty solid and have confidence now. I could say some things about the Brett Favre era, but, well, I am a hopeless Brett Favre fan, even with everything he does to try to destroy it.

To me, though, his commercial is really just what you get from star QB’s here. With that, he’s well on his way to filling Favre’s shoes ;)

by alynne4307 on Jan 2, 2012 5:39 PM GMT up reply actions

Awh bless

I really hoped that the Colts would pick him up this season after Manning went down; would’ve been hilarious.

As for the Packers being a solid team now, I think you’ll have your work cut out for a 3rd straight Super Bowl next season because the Eagles are gonna win it once they draft a MLB and stop making stupid errors.

by deg0ey on Jan 2, 2012 5:45 PM GMT up reply actions

Oh, the Colts....

even I didnt see that coming. Part way through the season some rumors were floating about and I had to laugh. The sad part is that he could probably still go out there and play better than whatever backup was there.

Nah, NFL's the easy one. Games usually start at 6 or 9pm.

They do have lots of similarities

American Football is certainly derived from it, which may well be how it got its name. Funny how that works, and why some people get so mad that we call that football and the other soccer, and both really probably are a result of our ties to England :)

by alynne4307 on Jan 2, 2012 5:31 PM GMT up reply actions

Well yes...

It’s derived from Rugby Football (to give it its correct title) so it’s well deserving of the name in that respect.

Three hours.... just 3!

hahah… I never thought about that as being the reason. Interesting. I always figured it was the padding and so much stop and go. However, I like thinking about tactics much more in that chess-match style.

by alynne4307 on Jan 2, 2012 5:33 PM GMT up reply actions

Low scoring is one

but folks that watch Hockey would really be fine with it. People that watch basketball would appreciate the flow of the game too, but not the points. I mean, its not like American football is high scoring for many more reasons than that you get so many points for a particular accomplishment.

The bigger gripes for Americans trying to watch football is 1) wrong calls and no review system and 2) diving.

by alynne4307 on Jan 2, 2012 5:44 PM GMT up reply actions

Oh... it is dreadful

plus… I like some action. Now… I know Barca scores a lot, but I often walk away from watching their games because they will pass some 29834092380825 times before they shoot. It drives me mad. I think that comes from my sporting background as well :)

by alynne4307 on Jan 2, 2012 5:50 PM GMT up reply actions

On the review system

You’ve got to (well maybe not if you’re a Packers fan) feel sorry for the Lions yesterday with that TD and no challenges left.

I would’ve thought that if it was close the ref would call it in and then get the automatic booth review to double check.

I love it

It’s somewhat awesome. I like how there is more time for thinking about tactics etc between plays, whereas in football you pretty much set the guys out and then have to try and change things on the fly by just shouting at guys from the sidelines.

It takes a long time, but there’s a good reason and so I don’t mind too much.

And it’s an awesome sport, so it’s all good :-)

by deg0ey on Jan 2, 2012 5:31 PM GMT up reply actions

Oh, I just posted about the tactics above

yes… that is what makes it a great sport. And while they dont really do “captains”, I like that you have sort of a clear general of the field in your QB.

Also... have you watched the college game yet?

by alynne4307 on Jan 2, 2012 5:35 PM GMT up reply actions

No, I haven't yet

I keep meaning to pick a team at random and then support them for evermore (much like I did with the Eagles). I’ll do it next season, I think. It’s a bit more difficult to watch the games, though – NFL Gamepass is my friend :-)

by deg0ey on Jan 2, 2012 5:40 PM GMT up reply actions

Gonna give you one

Ohio State. We need more support right now with our coaching situation. But, otherwise, easily the bestest college football team ever. (this is not an unbiased post).

by alynne4307 on Jan 2, 2012 5:46 PM GMT up reply actions

Based on no prior knowledge of the league structure etc

I need to ask a few questions:

1. Are they any good? I’m after a team that’s generally around the level of Liverpool – not much of a bandwagon to be jumping on, but there’s not much danger of them getting relegated or whatever.

2. Are their games exciting? I get bored easily

3. Do they have any players I might’ve heard of?

4. Do they get to play against other good teams? I don’t want a team that’s just the best in a bad division.

This is basically the logic I used to arbitrarily choose the Eagles a few years back – obviously worked out well in the long term :p

by deg0ey on Jan 2, 2012 5:55 PM GMT up reply actions

They're the Liverpool of the Big Ten.

But like the 1980’s Liverpool, not current Liverpool. Wisconsin, and I’m not just saying that, are pretty consistently good but not fabulous.

by deg0ey on Jan 2, 2012 6:00 PM GMT up reply actions

It's the traditionally top teams of the Midwest region.

There were originally like 6 or 8 teams, then it eventually became 10 for a long time. They kept the name even after they became 11, and now 12. Ironically, the Big 12 has 10 teams, and the Big Ten has 12.

They've been good, but they probably won't continue.

They’re in the Rose Bowl tonight, if you can find it.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 2, 2012 6:09 PM GMT up reply actions

Well,

historically, we are it. There aint no such thing as relegation here, so you are in luck! Not a bandwagon kind of team because we’ve been solid throughout time, and traditionally we kill Michigan. Problem is that we had a coaching and player issue, because of the one thing that really disrupts the sport… the NCAA (think the FA).

2) I like their games… recently we’ve had very Vick style quarterbacks, which is weird, because I dont tend to love the runners in the NFL, but it makes for a crazy exciting game in college. The last couple have been known for scoring while running more than for their passing. And their last match just before the Michigan game… senior day, I think… that one had me on the edge. The Michigan game was also crazy, from what I gather.

3) AJ Hawk on GB game from there, umm, lots of linesmen and such… some of our running backs… Eddie George is our hero from the 90’s. This might be better… there is a section on players in the NFL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio_State_Buckeyes_football Troy Smith got the Heisman a few years back.

4) The Big Ten is a good division… I mean, it isn’t up there with the Pac-10 or South at the moment, but it is sort of a traditionally great division and never lets down. Think the Nebraskas and Penn States… generally good teams.

by alynne4307 on Jan 2, 2012 6:06 PM GMT up reply actions

Duuuuuude

If it’s good enough for Brian Rolle, it’s good enough for me!

by deg0ey on Jan 2, 2012 6:19 PM GMT up reply actions

The downside?

We now have a coach I loathe. I really hate him. Hate Urban Meyer. He will probably bring success, but he is scum. I hope for some magical return that brings back Tressel.

But, maybe I can accept Meyer if he can manage to not make OSU another Gators.. he is not free of scandal himself, and I’d take Tressel’s trespasses over his.

That said… should be an exciting next season! Sure that Meyer will improve recruiting… people wanna play under him and be the next Tebow, lol.

by alynne4307 on Jan 2, 2012 6:32 PM GMT up reply actions

Sorry.. that was my rant at just remembering he was the coach

It should be a decent year. Unfortunately, can’t have a bowl. The NCAA has pretty much slaughtered OSU for players selling memorabilia a few seasons ago.

I didn't mean that.

I meant that it was the sort of game any team could have lost or drawn.

by alynne4307 on Jan 2, 2012 6:54 PM GMT up reply actions

If I wanna read good stories

then FanFiction.net would be the last address I’d type into my browser. No – just curious – I’m the type who shake my head about fanfics on gaming characters, but writing fanfics about real existing persons certainly tops that … outright freaking!

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by alynne4307 on Jan 2, 2012 11:23 PM GMT up reply actions

Oh to be totally honest

FanFiction.net isn’t a place designed for fanfics on real existing persons. I believe it was started because people wrote stuff on gaming characters they found interesting and wanted to share it with others. However they might have fanfics of real existing persons … I never really checked (because I don’t wanna know what people have in minds with regards to the likes of C.Ron and F.Torres, considering most fanfic authours are female …)

On a more general note

maybe it’s the same crux with Torres and Lampard – I should not focus myself so much on their designed role, CF, AM, CM … but concentrate my verdict more on the actual outcome, because maybe this is a hindrance why I loathe both of them here and there

Yes, the internet connection I got

but if you have enough memory space and CPU power it doesn’t matter too much – depending on the resolution of the gif, of course. Even most vintage systems from 2003 and upward can handle them smoothly … of course when the internet connection is slow to download the thing it doesn’t matter how much power your system has. The slowest component slows down everything

Torres stats for this match

#CFC Torres 90’ | Pass Comp 36/39 92% | Touches 57 Loss Pos 3 | Chances Created 2 | Successful Dribbles 3/4 | Shots(On) 3(0) |

by el chelsea fuerte on Jan 2, 2012 5:27 PM GMT reply actions

Those stats support what we saw here as well

He played much less like a center forward and much more like false-9.

by DPeezy on Jan 2, 2012 5:46 PM GMT up reply actions

I'd got with the former

They may have talked about it on the training ground / dressing room (drop deeper to be more involved), but it was probably more of a case of something that they found out early that worked well against the Wolves defense so they kept doing it.

The Torres/Lampard switching was very nice and in that sense reminded me of some of Frank’s best games.
