Wait...What? ANOTHER Game? Wolverhampton v. Chelsea FC: Preview - UPDATED!

You can't see him! Because he doesn't play. :(((

UPDATE: The Daily Fail has claimed that half our squad has been struck down by polio and/or perished in freak MRI accidents. CRISIS!

Always appropriate to be playing a team called Wolves in the middle of winter...as long as we don't get thrown to them. Of course, when it rains, it pours - and given our recent form, I would not put anything past us anymore.

But it's a whole new year...despite the fact that this match comes not 48 hours after the final whistle (and associated booing at Stamford Bridge) blew on the Aston Villa debacle. We can only hope that the psychological boost provided by the artificial framework of the Gregorian calendar triumphs over the potentially flagging morale of the squad.

Andre Villas-Boas will have you believe that there is no crisis and no need to reach for the PANIC button...but the 7 points lost from winning positions in the last four games, combined with our position in the table (the lowest that Chelsea have been at the turn of the year in over a decade) may indicate otherwise. Those 7 lost points are especially frustrating given the flounderings of those in the table above and around us.

All that must be pushed aside, as another underperformance at Wolverhampton would not be a welcome way to start 2012. With the players barely having had the time to take a hot (or cold) shower, they must regather themselves and put together a winning performance in one of those "cold nights in [somewhere in mid-table Anglia]".

Star-divide

I don't know much about Wolves (nor do I really care to) but I do know that Steven Fletcher has an annoying knack for scoring (and for some reason is in the SB nation database as Steven Kenneth Fletcher...), that Stephen Hunt (a living, breathing rhyming slang) plays for them, and that they just signed Emmanuel Frimpong on loan from Arsenal and the young destroyer is expected to start on Monday. And that, for the longest time, I used to confuse current Wolves manager Mick McCarthy with current Chelsea scout Mick McGiven. (Now THAT'S what I call an opposing scouting report. Eat your heart out, Dani Sousa!)

The Chelsea lineup for tomorrow is anybody's guess. AVB has already stated that there will be changes due to the timing of this fixture, although I highly doubt we'd see a Carling Cup lineup out there. The likelihood of added emphasis on the FA Cup (with the stated desire to play Drogba in the 3rd round match v. Portsmouth) may also complicate things. Here's my wild guess:

Chelsea (3-5-2 - haha, no - 4-3-3): Cech - Cole, Terry, Sideshow, Bosingwa - Romeu - Lampard, Malouda - Kalou, Torres, Sturridge

Yeah, that's right. Salomon Kalou. He's the KEY!!!

And no, I will absolutely not mention the fact that we lost in this exact same fixture last year (almost exactly one year ago, to the date), with a stupid deflected goal off of Jose Bosingwa's shins keeping all three points at the Molineux.

Oh.

Anyway, join us here tomorrow for all the fun. 10am EST / 7am PST. Leftover New Year's champagne optional...but advised.

How will we screw it up this time? I'm dying to find out. Btw, if the Mail is to be believed,

Cole, Kalou, Malou, and Drogba are injured and won’t feature. Sturridge is also a doubt.

So no Kalou key magic for us. :(

Yeah, they all make the trip

but, as a watcher of Chelsea’s youth and reserve teams for over a decade(most depressing job ever given nobody ever makes it to the first team rendering all of it pointless)you can bet anything you like that the nearest ANY will get is the bench.

Cole can’t start? They will play Bos and Paulo at both FBs. So no Ryan. JT poorly? He will play in a wheelchair if it means they don’t have to play Nat or Hutch-failing that the kit man will do-he’kll be “experienced”.

And so to Josh “I’d be screaming at him to leave the club I love if I had chance because we treat him like crap” McEachran-we will play ANYONE in midfield in front of him and possibly members of the away support(who couldn’t do much worse than Raul or Frank’s last attempts, frankly)too.

I’m even getting sick of hearing MYSELF on the subject but we are easily the weakest big club in the World at getting our own talent blooded properly. Christ, we spent a ton on Lukaku just to lead the line for our reserves. I#m sure he’d be learning more playing for Anderlecht in the league and EC wouldn’t he?

Anyway, the lie that AVB told saying if those in the team failed the kids WOULD get a go has proven to be the biggest porky of the past year(and he tells a few)so forgive my not thinking they’ll play at Wolves.

by mastiffchild on Jan 2, 2012 3:44 AM GMT up reply actions

lol, mate, I know this really bothers you

But just because they’re young and promising, it does not mean they’re ready to start or procure meaningful minutes. Even v. Wolves.

Contrary to popular belief, the youngsters also do not just sit around twiddling their thumbs and playing FIFA 12 when they’re not being picked for the first team. I’m sure Lukaku is learning a ton, as evidenced just his slowly increasing stamina.

Sinclair is doing really well for his debut season in the premier league. (Not considering the cameos for Blues).

The pressure is clearly too much as AVB’s not go the merit fergie has.

The title cracked me up....

……That was my impression when I saw the advertisement during today’s Sunderland win of tomorrow’s broadcast. Along with, “my God, they’re going to inflict more pain and suffering on us in this holiday season?”

No longer sure if I am excited

or emotionally worn out on these! Curious though, these games with 1 day in between… you know, unless you are ManU. Guess their QPR and Fulham fixtures were pretty close, but I like to find more reasons to hate them.

by alynne4307 on Jan 2, 2012 4:50 AM GMT reply actions

I might drop Sturridge for Kalou

And keep Mata in the team, but that’s about it. Really hope Kalouda gets a chance to play! And somebody unleash the LUKAKU as a sub!!

by Avinash Mohan on Jan 2, 2012 5:30 AM GMT reply actions

I’d do that too but only 10 minutes for Lukaku, changing our tactics to purely long balls.

by Jwens on Jan 2, 2012 6:20 AM GMT up reply actions

It might not work when playing against Wolves though.

by Jwens on Jan 2, 2012 6:20 AM GMT up reply actions

Yeah, every bit of game time counts

Long balls, fine. But I want Lukaku to get used to our new way of playing too,the passing game and all that. Or we can just use him in the FA Cup,which looks more likely.

by Avinash Mohan on Jan 2, 2012 6:57 AM GMT up reply actions

Meanwhile...

Terry is trying to recover from this, and hoping this dude is also banned from the Molineux:

Sometimes the guy gets some ass when he isn’t even hounding for it!

by alynne4307 on Jan 2, 2012 5:51 AM GMT reply actions

No..

but I am sure Terry was wishing they got this kind of fooligan on the field instead:

I was wondering what that dude was up to, though.. and here I thought he was trying to pick a fight with him :)

by alynne4307 on Jan 2, 2012 5:57 AM GMT up reply actions

Actually

looks like Ji of Sunderland got a similar show of love after his goal today. Goodness… I love me some Nando, but I could be sitting on the field and he could score a hat trick, and I could be drunk off my arse, and I wouldn’t manage to have the balls some of these folks do! To be fair, I might try to run up and hug DL or Mata, mostly because DL seems like he’d offer them, and Mata always tweets about them and he kind of reminds me of the Snuggle fabric softener teddy bear.

Hey guys

Hows van der Wiel to Valencia shaping up?

by RamStamford on Jan 2, 2012 6:01 AM GMT via mobile reply actions

lost points as usual

i won’t be surprised if we lost the match.Guess i’m getting used to this

by jeremy25 on Jan 2, 2012 7:56 AM GMT via mobile reply actions

will be interesting to see how today look our starting line-up

If we believe the Daily Fail, then Cech, Terry, Cole, Drogba, Kalou, Sturridge, Malouda, Ivanovic, Essien might not be fit for the game today. In this light, the big question is that does Sturridge plays even when he’s not in the best condition, or taken from the reserve Milan Lalkovic (as Kalou and Malouda are also injured and diseased), or maybe AVB will use Bosingwa in RW position (which seems the most plausible). So the line-up can be something close to this in 4-3-3 : Hilario, Ferreira (or Hutchinson), Luiz, Chalaboah, Bertrand, Romeu, Ramires, McEachran, Bosingwa (or Lalkovic), Mata,Torres. Today we see if AVB is good enough for Chelsea coach who trusts his young players.

Open Mutiny…good headline from the dirt sheets. However, if that was the case Abramovich (now recovered from the hangover of his James Bond Villain-style New Years Eve Party on an island) would sack the manager.

by astrotrain on Jan 2, 2012 2:18 PM GMT reply actions

Twitter line-up (not official)

Cech
Bos-Luiz-Terry-Cole
Romeu-Meireles
Ramires-FL-Mata
-——Torres

That’s my best guess at our formation. What happened to playing one of the youngsters? Surely Cole can be rested. Bertrand is more than capable of taking over for one game.

by Valens on Jan 2, 2012 2:21 PM GMT reply actions

Meireles and Lampard again. Oh boy, we're in for a treat.

I hope Joshy at least makes an appearance when our midfield is crying out for creativity in the second half.

by Valens on Jan 2, 2012 2:22 PM GMT up reply actions

I'm not exactly up to date

since I missed everything since the last Chelsea match … but the mere thought of Lampard and Meireles in midfield together scares me

Well, you’d think after today the club can start buying players, things have gone quiet for the past few days.

by astrotrain on Jan 2, 2012 2:25 PM GMT reply actions

Zubar and Milijas OUT

Fletcher, Hunt and Jarvis BENCH
Doyle starts.

Idk why, but I’ve got a feeling Wolves want to lose

by theRamster on Jan 2, 2012 2:30 PM GMT up reply actions

Can't believe that

Really can’t. First day home sweet home again … and wow instead of sorting out the mess after a loooooooong trip far from home there is this Chelsea match. Ouch ow ouch

Where were you mate?

You didn’t post anything for like 2 weeks.

Oh and always wondered what does “Tor ilisar’thera’nal” mean? :P

by theRamster on Jan 2, 2012 2:33 PM GMT up reply actions

Hey

I guess it’s always a bad thing when absence is noticed – I thought nobody would notice I wasn’t here all along!

I was in a Swiss chalet on skiing holidays. No Chelsea matches in between, no internet connection, nothing – just going down to town and get food everyday. Family and friends and such

Tor ilisar’thera’nal is Darnassian and from Warcraft 3, meaning “Our enemies beware” – my screenname is Maiev, right? ;)

You bring something special to the comments

which is why you were missed :c). Not annoying at all imo.

Ha!

Nobody brings in so many incorrect English terms and hilarious language mistakes. Guess that’s special :P

I will need hours to finish browsing through everything that happened while I was cut off from the Chelsea world

so don’t mind if I post rubbish in the game thread because I’m not up to date

Team Sheet:

Cech – Bosingwa, Luiz, Terry, Cole – Romeu, Ramires, Meireles, Lampard – Mata, Torres.

Radically different team, I assume we will play a diamond 4-4-2 with Mata behind Torres

by Toosy_13 on Jan 2, 2012 2:39 PM GMT reply actions

So who would play RW, only Ramires could fill the role I expect but

it seems to make more sense with the diamond. I like Mata behind Torres though and hopefully Torres can start to become the beast that is hidden somewhere in him.

by Toosy_13 on Jan 2, 2012 2:44 PM GMT up reply actions

When will Drogba depart for the ACN?

Not that I want him away so desperately, but since everyone is talking about Torres’ future with CFC, it would be interesting to see if he at least can get a safe starting spot when Drogba isn’t there
