Potential Chelsea FC Transfer Target: Stevan Jovetic

Photo

There were some rumors this morning (albeit from a source with poor credibility) that Chelsea had bid a sum of £14 million for the services of Fiorentina attacker Stevan Jovetic and seen the bid declined. Whether or not these rumors are true, I'll give them some credit for being fairly well thought out for a change. Jovetic is only 22 years of age, so he fits well with the youth movement at Chelsea. He's currently at Fiorentina and therefore not cup tied in any way. We know AVB is looking to add a versatile attacker, and Jovetic certainly fits that bill. Fiorentina is also a club that safely in the middle of the Italian table, so picturing them as a January seller is not too difficult. The club are hurting financially, making player sales quite likely in the near future. When you add all of those factors up you get a pretty believable rumor despite a truly awful source. With that in mind I think we'll spend a few minutes today looking at the young attacker.

Jovetic is a Montenegrin international who's been plying his trade in Italy since 2008. Prior to that he was the youngest player ever to captain Partizan. He was born 11/2/89 making him just recently 22 years of age. He's generally played as either a left winger or in a slightly more recessed role on the left. He's also got some experience recently playing just behind the center forward, and he looks very comfortable there. He's even on rare occasion been called upon to fill in as a lone striker with some success. His skillset would actually compliment Juan Mata quite well, as both players would benefit from the interchangeability that the other offers.

Star-divide

Jovetic stands 6' tall and is filling out fairly well. From a build standpoint there is little to suggest he'd be a liability. He's relatively fast, but he's not overly useful in the air for a decently sized player. In the positions he generally finds himself playing that likely won't be much of a concern though. Stevan has displayed excellent balance in his time in Italy, and he generally does a nice job holding off defenders.

Technically speaking Jovetic is a very nice player. He's quite good with the ball at his feet, although he does tend to dribble a bit much for my liking some of the time. He's excellent at playing through balls from the center, but his crossing is fairly average when he drifts out wide. Sometimes his balls over the top are a bit lacking as well, so that's a trend that bears consideration when planning tactically with Jovetic. He does do an excellent job of seeing the pitch though, so with some work on his high passing he could be a real gem. All told he seems like the exact type of passer that would further compliment Fernando Torres*.

Jovetic also offers some threat with his longer shooting. He's been a decent option when putting free kicks on goal, and his finishing around the goal is also first class. His style leads to a good number of fouls being drawn in dangerous areas, something that should compliment Chelsea well on days that we play both Branislav Ivanovic and Gary Cahill. Defensively Jovetic is also somewhat useful as he tracks back willingly. What he doesn't bring to that table is aggressive tackling, something which might benefit him in England.

I've got a couple of Jovetic videos for you, the first is from a game last season against Roma:

Next up we have some highlights from a game against Serie A opponent Genoa:

I like both of the above videos as they highlight much of his routine touches during the course of a game. It definitely gives you a better look at the player than your standard highlight video. Jovetic would be a fine addition to Chelsea if anything close to the rumored price is accurate, but like I mentioned above it originated form an extremely dubious source. I'd be very happy if there was even a shred of truth to this one as Jovetic is exactly the type of player that could believably be available in January. It will certainly be interesting to watch this one over the next several days to see what (if any) response their is from the club and from Fiorentina. Like Graham, you may consider my interest piqued by this rumor.

*I feel obligated to mention Torres at least once per post in any profile of an attacker

Meh, big one too

Jovetic just doesnt strike me as an imposing player and were we to sign him now I’d be concerned that we’d do so purely, or mainly, because he’s not cup tied. There are also several downsides to chancing a move for him too: he’s had one cruciate injury and(I know from personal experience how painful and recurring they can be)will likely alsways suffer with his knees and for a player in his position who likes to accelerate and dribble it’s VERY likely to be pretty soon too. He’s also played nopthing LIKE the pace of the EPL and would struggle for tempo, lacks courage in the tackle when he has the bal and when he’s the one tackling which adds to the chances of more injuries and, being honest, he feels a debt to Fiorentina for sticking him on a bigger contract when he’s been out so long with injury so soonafter joining them and this will, recent extension, mean we wouldn’t get him for any less than Mata cost and likely nearer 30million in/January and if Hazard is £33million I know where I’d be headed and it wouldn’t be to Firenze to negotiate.

The important thing to me is the rebuild and NOT the CL ov er that and signing Stefan does not mean we’d be more likely to beat Napoli and if we issed out on a better player in Hazard just cos this guy isn’t tied and then went out anyway(ironically Lavezzis twice the player)we’d look daft as for such a small difference in cost added to the lack of injury risk on Hazard I tyhink we’d be mental not to go belgian-or at least try. Don’t think Jovetic is good enough to help us build a winning side anyway and worry he’d be wrecked by injury and we’d never make anythng back. Not for me, too many issues and would be dear for an average and inconsistent player even if he statys fit. Markovic looks a better prospect to me-and I wouldn’t take him yet either.

Hazard would cost more than £33mil

His agent said if he goes in the summer he’s worth at least £33mil. The pappers decided that meant he had a release clause but he doesn’t. If we wanted him now we’d have to pay a shed load. At least £50mil IMO as they have no reason to sell now and he’s said he’s happy to stay until summer. We can all dream though!

Seriously doubt we can get Hazard

I think he said he wants to go to Madrid and I think they want him, lets face it they try to buy most top prospects regardless of whether they need them or not, and when it comes to a transfer battle with Madrid there is only going to be one winner and it ain’t Chelsea. Also I would say Hazard would likely cost about twice as much as Jovetic and there is no certainty he would be such a success in the premiership, I have also heard reports of the Belgian manager being critical of his attitude which is not a good sign and not something you would say about your start player if it wasn’t true! Not sure who Markovic is but I think young Xherdan Shaqiri could be another good shout to add some attacking flair, wouldn’t cost a bomb or be too hard to get since he plays in Switzerland and Chelsea would be unlikely to face the same competition for him as they would for Hazard, I thought he was outstanding both against Man Utd in this seasons CL and throughout the European U21 tournament last summer.

i hope we get him

hes a great fit for the team, as far as positions he plays and his height, he seems like the perfect anelka replacement… on a side note, as far as young attackers in the Serie A, I also like Gaston Ramirez

He sounds like the right guy for our left wing

Him Danny and Mata could all swap positions throughout a game popping up in the middle or on the wings. Would add a great amount of service to Torres and all of them can add goals. I’d do it.

My Two Cents

Hell of a player but he dives too much for my liking. On a team with Drogba and Torres the last thing we need is another player seen as a diver. The reputation of the team means something clearly since Torres has gotten zero 50-50 calls in his favor (see Sunderland match). In the first three minutes of the first video Jovetic either dives or exaggerates the contact/pain a half dozen times. Maybe he’s grown up a bit after being seriously injured (and can now see what real pain is) but I doubt it. Good player, under 20M is a steal and I’d be happy to have him but I’d hate to see him flying through the air where Chelsea blue.

Diving/simulation is here to stay, unfortunately

Until:
a) We get more referees
b) Post-game video replay is used to punish divers

by DPeezy on Jan 17, 2012 2:12 AM GMT up reply actions

Well, sure

But if we stamp out divers by enacting (severe enough) post-game punishments, the instances of cheating will decrease, enabling to refs to make much better calls. So incidents like the Torres yellow on Saturday would have a much smaller chance of occuring.

The possible moral stigma that may get attached to a player and the very small chance of being shown a yellow for diving is currently providing absolutely no motivation for players to stop cheating. I only way I see that changing is through some quality, old-school negative reinforcement.

While I'd love Eden Hazard, if Jovetic is available this window at half the price, it's hard to argue against the move.

there’s a lot of Hazard rumors going around at the moment, but they seem to be the typical Daily Mail vintage crap.

by Cablinasian on Jan 17, 2012 12:28 AM GMT reply actions

he would be a lort more than half the price

and isn’t much more than half the player AND will get injured again. Haven’t we seen enough of weak knees with Essien? I wouldn’t let it cross you mind and pray AVB wouldn’t ask about him. Fiorentian extended his wages and won’t have done that only to let go of him to Chelsea for cheap. Add the Chelsea tax in and I’d say they’d not sell below £25million and with Hazard at £33mill max and no big injuries, better pace and plays at a higher tempo? I personbally doubt we’d see them sell Jovetic to us even for that but an *million gap doesn’t represent the divide in class between Eden and Jovetic so Hazard would be better value.

I’d rather we sign nobody than go for Stefan, seriously, he’ll get injured and lose what little pace he has and we’d have also lost any resale value and not get much insurance and/or be stuck with his wages and no performance. Hazard’s a better player and less risk because of those knees.

Moving goalposts

The transfer “rumor” (or whatever passes for a story by the Mail) sets the price at 14m. Any and all speculation that we’ve done from there is based on said price.

Of course he’d be a shit buy at 25m. C’mon, man.

by DPeezy on Jan 17, 2012 6:37 AM GMT up reply actions

Are we now in the business of predicting injuries?

O well. For that price being offered. Not much of a risk. Ask Bayern with Arjen Robben or Sneijder with Inter Milan. As far as he is not on a fat contract. People are forgetting one thing here. Jovetic was tearing up the Serie A league way before Pastore and Sanchez’s were hot cakes. Jovetic also has similar amount of goals as Cavani and more goals than Pato. The cheapest out of Pastore, Pato, Sanchez and Cavani is Sanchez around 33mm Euros. Jovetic will cost around 20mm and we’ve been chasing him since Arnesen’s time. If there is any iota to this, I will buy him in a heartbeat.
