Gary Cahill officially joins Chelsea FC
We've known the deal was done for some time, but the club finally released their official statement this morning. Gary Cahill will be joining Chelsea FC for an amount believed to be about £7 million. Rumors have the deal in the neighborhood of £80k per week, but once again there is nothing to confirm these figures. What we do know for sure is that Cahill will be assigned the number 24 kit and will be available for selection this weekend as we travel to Norwich. He's also not cup tied in any competition we're involved in, so there will be nothing limiting when we can play the England international.
As for Cahill himself, he seems very excited by the move. Asked about the transfer, he responded with the following:
Chelsea is a massive club, it is a club that looks to win trophies season in season out and it is a big opportunity for me to be a part of that. Opportunities like this you can't turn down.
Cahill will occupy a homegrown spot on Chelsea's 25 man FA roster and qualifies as association trained for the Champions League. The club did not get into the specifics of how he'll be used in the press conference today, but you'd have to assume he'll have plenty of opportunities to play with Branislav Ivanovic currently out injured. Welcome to Chelsea Gary, do us all proud...

welcome gary
he’ll be solid.. This makes Brani our starting RB when healthy? With Luiz, Cahill, Terry (does he ever get a game off) rotating in at CB?… We need to let Bertrand give Ash a game off as well
Yeah we have plenty more options now
And hopefully Ashley will step down to give Bertrand a chance. I mean Ashley is definitely better at the moment, just not so much better that Bertrand never deserves a start.
Is Cahill quick?
Terry’s lack of pace obviously means he needs someone quicker next to him..
Defensive should have a new look now!
I am interested to see how we alter the back-line now with the signing of Cahill. Since Luiz has been rather inconsistent at CB, and with Ivanovic out injured, and Bosingwa as bad as he is, I think I would play both Cahill and Terry in the middle at CB. I couldn’t agree more that Cole deserves a break, he looked rough this last weekend and was shredded on multiple occasions by Sesegnon. What about Luiz at RB? Many may disagree with this because it’s not his natural position, BUT…anyone will be better than Bosingwa for the time being and let’s be honest, Luiz scares the crap out of me sometimes (even against Sunderland, he was marking air for a majority of the game).
I would like to experiment a little and try this:
Cech
Luiz, Terry, Cahill, Bertrand (Cole)
These next few games will be crucial for our defense to build it’s confidence, it’s shape, and we’ll hopefully have a better idea of the starting squad at the back. These next two away games are crucial and we’ll need all the confidence and motivation we can get for ManUre on Feb. 2nd.
Yeah no Sideshow as a wingback. It would just make AVB cry..

Been said to death but, Luiz as CDM, Terry/Cahill CB duo, Bertrand/Cole LB rotation, Bosingwa/Brana RB.
I'd rather play Luiz at RB the DM
If he was going to be moved to DM he would have been moved there by now. I think playing Luiz, Cahill and Terry on rotation is best. I think Terry has been playing through injury for the past two years and could do with a few less games.
Given Luiz' appearances at Fullback with Benfica
I’m not so sure why he should feature the RB position – or does his development with us since he joined us in January give further evidence that his Benfica appearances don’t give?
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
He played DM in Brazil and nearly didn't make it in football.
Seriously, he was on the verge of having to give up entirely when he moved to CB, and was good.

Won't happen...
With Romeu being as wonderful as he has been, and a healthy Bison (Essien) returning to the first team I do not see Luiz being given a chance at CDM.
And I must add this: I def agree he could and should play there, but I don’t believe he’ll be placed their any time soon.

I really don't think AVB will ever want to play him anywhere other than CB
He has said recently
“He’s going to be one of the greatest central defenders in the world. Why? Because of his characteristics: technical ability, anticipation and speed.”
Really don't see the benefit of putting Luiz in midfield
He’d have less time on the ball and has already proven that he’s not very good there.
Welcome Gary
now this is the official time I’m not allowed to say you suck :D Oh and I’m glad you didn’t take the 13 kit. Looking forward to seeing you featuring in a Chelsea jersey. Do us proud!

i believe he used to wear 14?? saving it for modric??
;) just wishful thinking

I don't see where he'd fit in tbh
Not worth the money. We’re strong in CM. A left winger would complete this side (maybe a good young RB aswell)
I think you're mistaking strength with depth.
Regardless of your opinion of Modric, he would walk right into our central midfield with both hands tied behind his back.
And cost us a fortune in the process...
Regardless of whether he would walk right into our central midfield, he’d still probably be a bad buy purely based on the financial aspect
kevin de bruyne wears 14...
just saying:)

I'm really not.
Where would you play him? He’d get in the way of Mata if played in the more attacking midfield position that Lampard usually takes, I wouldn’t think of taking the Ramires/Essien role out of our side and I wouldn’t play him as a DM. Even in the hole in a 4-2-3-1 with Mata on the left Mata would basically be doing the same job as him. We already have a world class playmaker in Mata.
Which role would you drop for Modric? The box-box or DM? It wouldn’t work which is why I don’t think i ever wanted Modric. When it was like £24mil i thought it would be alright cover on the wings and midfield but it wouldn’t add to the side we’d have to change the way Mata plays or sacrifice a DM. If you wanna hurt Tottenham with a £40mil buy get Bale and play him on the left and move Mata into the middle.
As a deep-lying play maker?
I suppose. But I still don’t think it would add something we don;t already have. If it was an expected price like in the 20-25mil region it’d be a decent deal. I just don;t thik he’s a 40mil player. Bale on the other hand would give us exactly what we need. Although i think even a bid of 50mil wouldn’t get him to us.
I was with you up until the bit about Bale
Not a fan of his in the slightest.
But yeah, not buying Modric for 40mil is definitely the way forward.
How come?
Bale is exactly the winger we need. Pace, skill and excellent crosses. We don’t want another winger like Mata who wants to play centrally. If we get Bale we get width and with two fast skillful wide players in Bale and Sturridge then Ramires speed in the middle we’d have a hell of a counter. Doesn’t have to be Bale just that sort of winger. Especially as i think it’ll be almost impossible to get Bale at the moment.
i wish valencia had signed for chelsea instead of Man U
we could use someone EXACTLY like him, personally i think he is just about the perfect natural wing, along with bale of course

Daily Mail guessed we had a bid of 40m turned down
but given the stance of Levy and Arry seemingly it’s not 40m, it’s infinite
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Welcome to Chelsea!
Finally. Though you wasted a lot of time doing it. Can’t wait to see you in action for the Chels!! :D
jeez
imagine if they had accepted 14 mil, would have been a beautiful bit of business, if its true at all anyway

i actually think stephen should do a profile on jovetic

http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896/premier-league/2012/01/16/2850285/manchester-united-chelsea-and-tottenham-all-keen-on
probably bs, but i hear were also keen for tim krul, i like them both but do we really need a new keeper? i dont think so, unless our plan is to just like sell cech or something

I generally just ignore goal.com transfer "news" on principle
They generally don’t have anything resembling a source
