After a disappointing loan spell at Wigan Athletic, young Chelsea left-back Patrick van Aanholt will take a step down and head to the Eredivisie on loan for the rest of the season. But don't take my word for it:
With Ryan Bertrand established as Ashley Cole's imaginary friend/primary backup, van Aanholt needed some playing time and at Vitesse he should be able to actually play (unlike at Wigan, where he was blocked by Maynor Figueroa and then fell out of favour). The Eredivisie isn't really the level of competition I'd like to see a guy who's gotten first-team playing time at, but we'll take what we can get at this point - he needs to play, and here he will almost certainly do so.
Good luck in Holland, Patrick!
