Potential Chelsea FC Transfer Target: Paul Pogba
Sometimes I just love writing these things, and this is going to be one of my favorites. It almost feels like I'm trolling all of the United fans out there talking about stealing one of their best prospects on a free. For those of you not familiar, Paul Pogba is a very talented midfielder out of the Manchester United academy. He arrived at the club in very Kakuta-like controversial circumstances that were cleared up between the clubs without the same level of involvement of Fifa. Since that time he's been a fixture in a very good United youth and reserve side and is generally considered to be right up there with Ravel Morrison as the top youth coming through their system. In the last week reports have begun to arise that Chelsea do indeed have some interest in Pogba from a few sources I've come to trust, and given his age and pricetag it would make some real sense.
Pogba originally hails from France and has been involved at every appropriate level of the French national team as he's been developing. Assuming he stays in England after this summer he'll eventually qualify as a homegrown player by FA standards. He's currently made three senior appearances for Manchester United, all coming in the Carling Cup. Pogba will turn 19 this March, so being on the fringes of the first team at a club like United definitely says good things about the youngster. While he's not the same type of player, he's probably a very similar level of prospect to our own Josh McEachran (and close in age as well).
From a physical standpoint, Pogba stands 6'1" tall. He's got decent pace, accelerates quickly, and his balance is first class. He's also fairly strong physically and combined with his balance he does well to fend off tackles. He's not known for being dominant in the air but he generally holds his own when challenged. One thing that's never been questioned about Pogba is his workrate, the youngster covers a fair amount of ground for a good sized midfielder. All in all he's got an exceptional set of physical traits for a Premier League central midfielder.
Technically Pogba is pretty impressive as well. He's never been noted for being a great dribbler, but his first touch and ball control are both exceptional. He's a very effective passer and is known for his excellent through balls. He's also got an absolutely fantastic long range shot that combines loads of movement with raw power. He's got some work to do with his reading of the game and defensive work, but that's not to be unexpected from an 18 year old.
Here's a little teaser video for those of you who haven't seen him in action yet:
Pogba is currently stalled in his contract negotiations with United based on the salary the player wants. The youngster is reportedly looking for a salary in the range of 45,000 per week which would be pretty large for someone who's yet to break through to the first team. While paying the youngster 45k per week may be a bit excessive, adding players of that potential on a free transfer just don't happen very often. Chelsea have had some experience with that type of deal before, giving Daniel Sturridge a pretty decent salary to tempt him from Manchester City three seasons ago.
If we do add Pogba it will result in a minor fee being decided by a tribunal. It will likely be considerably less than that of Sturridge just due to the lack of first team action, I'd guess the fee would be somewhere around 2 million if it goes that far. There's nothing to be lost by getting in contact with Pogba's agent at this point as he's free to negotiate a pre-contract arrangement should he so choose and doing so would really have no negative effect on Chelsea. If nothing else it simply drives up his salary should he choose to stay with United. There's also a chance that we simply settle a fee with United to allow him to join the club now should we come to that agreement with the player, thereby avoiding the tribunal in the process.
Paul Pogba won't be a player that turns the 2011/12 Chelsea squad into title contenders, but he'd be a cheap and talented addition to improve the club going forward. While there is no guarantee he'd ever become Chelsea quality he'd certainly add even more strength in numbers to an already loaded system. Like Oriol Romeu, there would be virtually no risk in adding him to the squad. Feel free to leave your thoughts on Pogba in the comments below, and if any United fans stop by please be nice...

I'd be overjoyed if we got him
The “Black Scholes” according to Man Utd fans. Would love to see what their opinion would be then.

Every penny we force them to pay to keep him is a penny...
…they can’t use to sign the players we really want.

Oh, and he would be a decent addition at that price.

No, he won't get a chance here
Hate to say it but he’d be an idiot to come to us. Josh is a simlar talent level? Well, he can’t get a kick when dross like Raul get a game every week so why would this kid? The issue isn’t weith signing decent kids but with getting them chances to show the might be good enough in meaningful first team games. We won’t allow Bertrand a game even when Cole(see Sessegnon ripping him a new one saturday for proof of just how jaded poor Ashley is and how in need of a rest he is too)is clearly in desperate need of the odd game out-not even in the FA against Pompey!
I can’t see why any agent would advise their chartgs to go to Chelsea with the current joke youth progression at the club even I, as a lifelong fan, couldn’t do that to someone’s dream career beccause we ruin more than we help and none of them ever have a real chance of getting in. Sturridge is a massive exception that was amazingly lucky to et a loan that worked for him but as most managers at a decent level are too scared to blood our kids for us as youngsters need a run of games to even tell if they might be up to it it isn’tJUST a Chelsea problem but Utd, Barca and a ton of other top clubs STILL manage it a lot better than we do.
Might we go for Pogba, sure, we might get him but should he come? Not in a million years-look at Lukaku, Josh, Ryan ……God it’s bad.

18 year old players don't start. At any elite club. Except Arsenal
I don’t understand how people can slag off on AVB or Chelsea for not giving playing time to a pair of 18 year olds. We couldn’t send Lukaku out on loan, and now that Essien is back Josh is leaving. If Josh and Lukaku don’t start for THREE MORE YEARS they still won’t be 22. Which is how old Sturridge is now and he’s starting.
Bertrand I’ll agree with, I’d like to see him get some playing time. He’s 22, he needs to start and Cole could use a week off.
But saying we don’t play youth, don’t give youth a chance…that’s silly. Youth pushed Malouda, Mikel, Anelka and Alex to the bench this season, and next season we’ll probably see more of the same.
As Culain said, they're 18!
They are where they should be. The simple fact is, they aren’t good enough yet. Sure, in the next few years, we should expect them to really step up, but players at this age are good for cameo appearances and cover. Getting Pogba would be about having him as he finishes developing for a small cost and little risk, rather than spending a mountain of cash after, or more likely, never getting him.
Basically, a deal for him now would be getting a player with a huge upside, and very little risk.

He looked good from the Carling Cup matches that I saw
We should have Mikel talk to him.
…On second thought maybe not.
I heard the same rumors about Morrison leaving. Now he's set to sign another contract.
Would be great if it happened, like anything that would piss Utd fans off, but very slim chances.
I don't know where you heard that Morrison is signing a new contract

I should've added twitter rumblings say that. SAF has already called him out on his demands.
Won’t be long before his signs another contract. At United or somewhere else.
I think you're just looking at fans that want him to stay
I haven’t even seen traditionally awful sources suggesting that he’s anywhere close to signing, and his own twitter feed certainly suggests the opposite.

Hands off lads
Id rather you have Ravel. He seems a headcase.
His legal troubles make John Terry look like an excemplary citizen :) (Excuse the spelling of excemplary)
My United supporting friend has raised a valid point...
‘If he’s arrogant enough to be after £45k/week when he’s not even a regular fixture on the bench, imagine how hard work he’ll be in a couple of years time’
That's awfully similar to what City fans said when Sturridge was holding out for 80k per week
It’s not arrogance at this point, United letting his contract wind down this far has increased his value as it erased his transfer fee. If he does leave on a free he’ll get awfully close to that, his agent played this very well.

Any team who'd sign him could afford to go nuts on salary if he's free.

On a five-year contract, and assuming a less than 2m compensation...
…the total cost of the transfer is like 13m. If he comes good, you’ve got him cheap, if not, you drop 2,340,000 per year in salary, and any fee you get. If he turned out like Kalou, good, but not good enough, the fee could be 3-5m, so if you assume, and I’ll admit it’s a big assumption, three years to work out, but doesn’t, and we get 3 million for him, the total cost of having for three years is just over 5m. That’s a risk a top team can absorb, and is essentially a no-lose situation. If I were Chelsea, I’d give him anything he wants, up to 60k p/w, where we’d be on the hook for ~7m over three years.

The initial calculation assumes 45,000 p/w.

Very true
And with his soon to be homegrown status, we’d be looking at a fair bit more than 3-5m, even if he turns out like Kalou.
To be honest, I don't know why United aren't throwing money at him.
The same maths applies for them. Even a cash-strapped club like United can afford that sort of risk, especially with the big contracts they have with older players that are going to come off their books in the near future.

It’s worth bearing in mind that the figures we’re talking about are still just rumour. And even if they’ve been leaked by somebody involved with a deal, they’re almost certainly somebody with some kind of angle.
This is obviously a negotiating process, so both sides are trying to get the best deal possible; I’d guess they’re gonna get there, it’s probably just a matter of time.
Although yeah, we should definitely get involved in the 40-50k region to see what happens
Love it for two reasons
a) We get another talent to add to our youth pool.
b) We get to stick it to United. If we take Morrison too, now….? :P
IF this goes through,i.e.

As long as he doesn't turn up to imitate Mikel ...
it’s not about Mikel hating, I like him very much, but I just have doubts Manure fans care so much he is with us :(
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Still I want him even if he turns to be Mikel
I would tease the Manure fans now and he would be still a good squad player.
I wouldn't be teasing them about Mikel if I were you
The £12M we gave them to stop FIFA getting involved in that transfer scenario would be the 5th highest transfer fee they have ever received for a guy that didn’t even play for them.
Whichever way you slice it, United got the better deal out of the Mikel saga. Let’s hope the same isn’t true when this dude’s future is decided.

Yeah I wouldn't mind too
since I like Mikel a lot but that’s the least thing about teasing them

ive wanted him for a while
i really like him , reminds me of viera. he would come in handy if romeu leaves.
I guess what's unclear to me is...
Re: fee set by tribunal
Is Pogba NOT on a professional contract right now?
Or is he on one and it’s up in the summer?
He is on his first professional contract
Players who leave the club prior to signing their first deal are subject to a set developmental fee. Players who leave on a free before the age of 24 are subject to a fee set by a tribunal.
