Anyone else see Warren Barton say Luiz is the root of all our defensive problems?

I sort of liked his commentary before. Needless to say, I’m disappointed.

Was just saying in the other thread

he is impressing me with his dumb comments today. And then Wynalda and him go on to say that “Mata and Torres might work”. Uhh, am I missing something? Did they not watch the last few games when they have both played together? I mean, Torres didnt get a goal, but Mata did. It seems as though they never watch Chelsea, just listen to other dumb pundits and repeat.

So I guess Sturridge has not managed to recover from his knock

Somewhat excited to see Ramires at forward from the start.
And, of course, ESSIEN!!!!!

Less excited about the Meireles – Lampard duo in the middle.

That doesn't do it justice...

Cross goes in and Torres does an awesome overhead/scissor kick that if it had been a couple of inches lower would have been the best goal that anyone has EVER scored…

Unfortunately it hit the bar.

Fortunately it rebounded off of Lampard’s leg and went in the goal.

by deg0ey on Jan 14, 2012 3:18 PM GMT up reply actions

A cross came in from the right.

Nando stood just inside of the left corner of the 6 yard box and let loose a scissor kick as the ball was above his waist. It rocketed off the underside of the crossbar, deflecting right onto Frank’s foot.

by Cablinasian on Jan 14, 2012 3:17 PM GMT up reply actions

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Jan 14, 2012 3:20 PM GMT up reply actions

This is so true

Torres isnt doing all that much different from Lpool days… apart from having way more attempts. But so many of his goals back when were pretty lucky. And still spectacular.

In fact, most of the goals that people love the most are the luckiest ones.

by alynne4307 on Jan 14, 2012 3:21 PM GMT up reply actions

And since we like to run out of luck sometimes

it’s never too bad to have a lucky one in the team, sure!

Nando needs to get the hair he had while at Liverpool. It worked for Wayne Rooney.

but in direct comparison with Frank 5-6 years ago – I mean back then when Frank still possessed that elegant agility (remember Bayern München goal? That’s what I mean) and could smile without his features cracking – that’s the Frank I basically mean

Meireles booked

Is that the first thing he’s done today? And how was that any worse than the foul on Ramires?

by Graham MacAree on Jan 14, 2012 4:33 PM GMT reply actions

Meireles needs to either:

1) hair cut
2) go back to full mohawk
3) go back to bald

if he does neither, then his form will continue to suck

by alynne4307 on Jan 14, 2012 4:39 PM GMT up reply actions

not necessarily long range

but just SHOOT when you’re in position. It might not be the ideal position, but it’s a shooting position then shoot. Danny does it. And Torres needs to learn it asap

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Jan 14, 2012 4:41 PM GMT up reply actions

Sturridge just shoots. Has nothing to do with shooting position. Thus the creation of the verb “Sturridging”.

im not saying they deserved anything. you can get all the chances you want, you still have to put it behind the keeper and sunderland couldnt do that.

by alynne4307 on Jan 14, 2012 5:39 PM GMT up reply actions

We were 7/10. Should have been better, but not overly bad.

Torres was fabulous. He should have scored with an overhead kick, but it rebounded off the bar and into Lampard for a goal. Other than that, he was good, but also could have been a bit better. He didn’t do much wrong, though.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 14, 2012 5:26 PM GMT up reply actions

You are more generous than I am on that rating :)

But that is because I know we can do better. Not because we suck.

Torres did a lot of backpassing today, or at least a higher percentage than he had in the last few games. He did well at times, but his performance may have been somewhat muted by a fairly quiet performance from Mata. And Ramires having an inability to really pass. And then Malouda happened.

by alynne4307 on Jan 14, 2012 5:30 PM GMT up reply actions

I really think we were better than it seemed.

Sunderland are always strong late, and they had the extra drive from it being 1-0. Had we scored two or three, this would have been a regulation win.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 14, 2012 5:31 PM GMT up reply actions

I think I was more frustrated by the passing and lack of linking up

We were pretty slow off the ball or just stood still a lot of the time and didnt try to help the player with the ball to make passes. Which led to some bad passes or poor dribbles where we lost the ball.

Just seemed the guys were not all that awake today. We also didnt do as well as we have to stop Sunderland’s play… we let them make their runs and passes quite a bit. Not sure if they were trying to draw them forward for the counter or something, but we didn’t apply much pressure on them.

by alynne4307 on Jan 14, 2012 5:35 PM GMT up reply actions

Sunderland weren't exactly open.

We had to break them down or counter their counter. We deserved more than one.

Not very

the whole team left a lot to be desired by their own standards, but managed to pull out the win. Torres had a few shining moments, and Lampard was in the right place at the right time with the right skills.

Not very good eh? How about the Bison?

How was he in the very few minutes he appeared?

by Garrincha7 on Jan 14, 2012 5:30 PM GMT up reply actions

He was as good as I think he could have been given the circumstances

I felt it was a little soon to put him in, to be honest. We were only 1 up and without much security in it staying that way, and because of his injury and lack of real match time, he was a bit slower, but not bad. He should be on his way in the next couple of games though. I think he might have had a shot on goal too.

by alynne4307 on Jan 14, 2012 5:32 PM GMT up reply actions

It was a game to get 3 points from and quick move on

No point in ruminating too much about it. The performance was “good enough” but it won’t ever go down as an advert for either team or the league itself.

sounds scary for a product that’s roughly resembling a … chocolate bar

Swiss, German, Belgian, what have you.

Oddly, the U.S. makes a more chocolatey Cadbury Dairy Milk. It’s made under licence by Hershey’s, and it’s really good.

I got it

because I didn’t know previously that chocolate bar can refer to broad, big chocolate pieces too. In German we have two separate words for it (Riegel and Tafel)

Usually, something like a Kit Kat would be a...

…candy bar in the U.S. or chocolate bar elsewhere, and the plain chocolate ones a bar of chocolate. There is a lot of overlap, though. In the U.S., something with a filling is a candy bar, and plain chocolate or chocolate with pieces in it is either a chocolate bar or bar of chocolate. Outside North America, though, I think they’re all chocolate bars.

Ah OK

That’s fairly new to me as I never thought about it … because we have the separation between “Riegel” and “Tafel” – a Twix, a Milky Way, a Kit Kat would all be considered “Riegel” due to their shape and a Milka (don’t know if this brand sells in the US) would be a “Tafel”. The “Tafel” usually has no filling, but it really depends; the classical solid bar would be without filling

As a Brit, I've always been disappointed with the chocolate selection in the US

Hershey’s is just rancid…

Although you’re pretty damn good at just about every other type of candy, so I guess that’s the trade off

by deg0ey on Jan 14, 2012 5:56 PM GMT up reply actions

Also, the names are all wrong, at least for Mars.

US – Europe
Milky Way = Mars
3 Musketeers = Milky Way

The Curly Wurly was once called 3 Musketeers in Europe, and Marathon in the US, but they reverted in Europe, and don’t sell it in the U.S. at all. Of course, Snickers used to be Marathon in the UK. It’s a confused mess.

correct.

it’s all about the dark chocolate.

by Cablinasian on Jan 14, 2012 10:54 PM GMT up reply actions

Pretty true

I take it with my KitKats and stuff, but i cant just eat milk chocolate by itself.

My friend loves those Crunchy bar things from England… which I mix up with Crunch bars here (which I also actually like… milk chocolate with stuff in it is the only way to have it). I’ve had the Aero bars.. those are kind of interesting.

Sugar may be one thing

but the waxiness of US candies is what gets me.

by alynne4307 on Jan 14, 2012 11:49 PM GMT up reply actions

All the chocolate is more chocolatey in Europe

I’ll have to head to the specialty shop in Harvard and see if they have the real deal (they tend to have lots of English candies). KitKats and Reeses are hands down, my favorites.

I never tasted American chocolate

but after reading this I’m sure I don’t want to. Well no chocolate of the word could top Swiss chocolate for me, anyway. Handmade, fresh … with rose petals!

…big brands are pretty disgusting.

Are Milka and Lindt

available in the US? They are in Asia … but dunno about the US because I was never there. Of course chocolate by industrial manufactures are not the same as chocolate, handmade by the local patissier. They make more use of fresh ingredients (and especially good milk) and that really makes the difference between good and not-so-good chocolate; however those brands can still create good chocolate for reasonable prices

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Jan 15, 2012 3:02 PM GMT up reply actions

Yes they are. They're not available everywhere, but my supermarket is...

…fantastic. They have all the big brands from around the world, even Kinder, though not the surpise eggs, which are ridiculously illegal in the U.S.. Seriously, each one is like a $300 fine.

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 15, 2012 4:13 PM GMT up reply actions

Why are Kinder Überraschungseier (Surprise eggs -

but they are LEGENDARY here in my country so I use the original form) illegal in the US? Licensing?

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Jan 15, 2012 8:54 PM GMT up reply actions

I think it's to do with the small parts

And the fact that children are encouraged to eat things that they could easily choke on.

I think it’s a bit of an unnecessary ban, but I sort of see the logic (if that is indeed what the logic is)

by deg0ey on Jan 15, 2012 9:06 PM GMT up reply actions

Strange logic that would be

since it would include all adults and older kids too :(

by Maiev on Jan 15, 2012 9:52 PM GMT up reply actions

It's because we don't allow inedible things inside...

…edible things. It makes sense, I guess, but the risk they pose, statistically, is far, far less than things which are perfectly legal. I’ve had them in Canada as a kid, but now, if you’re searched at the border, and have any, it’s a, like, $300 fine each. It’s ridiculous, really.

The toys

in the Ü-Eier (common abbreviation here) are separately packed … it’s rather difficult to mistake them for edible … OK other countries, other customs, I suggest. And yeah, since the chocolate of the Ü-Eier is rather ordinary (boring) I understand there is no need selling them without the toys

(There are actually more adults buying them than kids in Germany, since there are many fans collecting the figures and toys rather professionally, like stamps)

America, FUCK YEAH!

Good to know that I’ve broken that law/ban multiple times over the years.

by DPeezy on Jan 15, 2012 11:17 PM GMT up reply actions

You get fined when you buy it?

LOL if there were any product regulations here it would be the opposite: the vendor would be fined :D

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Jan 16, 2012 10:26 AM GMT up reply actions

No, I believe you get fined if you try to bring it into the country

Which is what I’ve done multiple times. You can’t buy it anywhere that I know of in the US.

by DPeezy on Jan 16, 2012 4:38 PM GMT up reply actions

Lindt has its own stores, too

Like Godiva and Ghirardelli. Most of our notable and higher quality chocolate comes from San Fran or something, I think. And we have excellent shops that are small. In fact, right around the corner from my apartment is a chocolate factory for Mexican-style chocolate. So good!

Hershey and those brands exist mostly for mass production candy bars and things- thus it isnt a luxury chocolate by any means and they take major shortcuts. Parafin wax and stabilizers and preservatives to keep the shelflife and stuff up.

by alynne4307 on Jan 16, 2012 12:44 AM GMT up reply actions

Yeah, but my point is

That the mass produced stuff in the UK is at least edible, whereas the Hershey stuff is actually terrible.

by deg0ey on Jan 16, 2012 1:17 AM GMT up reply actions

The Lindt lineup has been declined over the years

as far as their European lineup. It’s sad … 10 years they used to produce quality at the upper end – but nowadays they seem to want to compete against cheaper chocolate too and offer low-quality products as well – and their handmade stuff isn’t broadly available anymore since every supermarket around the corner have the 2€ Lindt bar. Nowadays here around if anyone wants to get real quality chocolate he needs to go to a patisserie – or best get to Switzerland :(

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Jan 16, 2012 10:30 AM GMT up reply actions

You know?

Not sure I’ve had true Swiss chocolate. I have had German chocolate as a kid. My grandparents lived in Germany for some years and used to come back every so often and bring us chocolate. They also sent us real advent calendars (tradition in my family to try to get them now). At the time, though, I was a dumb child and accustomed to the taste of Hershey’s and all that, so German chocolate tasted weird to me and I think I used to throw mine out sometimes :( I wish I was smarter then.

Hershey’s is not what you would go to for handmake chocolates, though. We have many chocolatiers and smaller shops for the good stuff. We also get some chocolate practices from Central America and such, which I highly recommend you try, if you’ve not. It is very different from European chocolate, but quite good.

by alynne4307 on Jan 16, 2012 12:52 AM GMT up reply actions

Not sure when it was your grandparents gave you the advent calendars

but I don’t think the quality has improved or decreased for that special area (advent calendar fillings) – but from what I can say it seems the quality of the stuff in chocolate calendars was never really great. Lindt and Hachez (upper brands for chocolate sweets) sell advent calendars, too, but from what I have been gathering, they don’t put in their better products, just the stuff from their standardized supermarket lineup. Well I reckon it’s just the difference between mass production and the little handmade amount for a small for few buyers.
I can’t say there is too much a difference between Swiss and German chocolate (the better sort, of course) regarding the chocolate itself, but Swiss patisseurs have fancier creations, with rose petals, raspberry, or mountain herbals

by Maiev on Jan 16, 2012 10:36 AM GMT up reply actions

We had an advent calendar filled with truffles this year

From Moonstruck Chocolate Co via Lot18.

It sure cost a pretty penny (especially when compared to your standard advent calendars), but it was well worth it. There is fantastic chocolate to be had in the US, as long as you’re willing to step beyond the mass market brands.

by DPeezy on Jan 16, 2012 4:48 PM GMT up reply actions

Chocolate yes

but Swiss one … those Nestle / Kraft bars don’t work it out for me no more :(
