Gary Cahill Deal Agreed - Report

Maybe we're paying Gary Cahill so much because he has three arms?

While I wouldn't go so far as to call this definitive, The Mirror is reporting that Gary Cahill has finally agreed personal terms with Chelsea on a five and a half year contract that runs until the close of the 2016/17 season. The wages? £80,000 a week. That's lower that then £100,000 Cahill's camp was reportedly demanding, but still significantly higher than I was hoping to pay for him.

Fortunately, the transfer fee is relatively low and there should be some sell-on value as the contract winds down, so Cahill's deal will only end up costing Chelsea £5.45M per season, but it's still an overpay in my book. Cahill's a decent option as a backup, but he's making starter money, and it would be unfortunately if the Blues were forced to give him more playing time than he deserves as a result*.

*I'm not rooting against Cahill, by any means. If he turns out to be the second coming of Marcel Desailly, I'd be all for that.

If the Mirror's report is accurate, I'm glad this is done, because we needed a Cahill-like player on the team. I'm just slightly annoyed that we're having to pay so much for the pleasure. When I have confirmation that they're not just making stuff up, I'll let you know. The defender is reportedly coming to Stamford Bridge for a medical on Friday night (i.e. as I'm writing this).

PS: If you're feeling really cranky about Cahill's supposed wages, just imagine we paid Bolton £15M for him and then gave him £50k/week. Same thing.

So we've essentially doubled his wages

He better be twice as good as he has been at Bolton then!

I'm wondering if we caved a bit on the salary due to need and because we're not planning...

…to keep him for the length of his contract. I can see us not needing him in a two or three years, and getting rid of him. If we’d have got him on 50,000 p/w, we could have let him see out his contract and leave for free, but now, I think there’s more incentive for us to sell him on early. I imagine his value will probably not fall much below where we got him. He’s an England international, and probably will keep getting caps for the foreseeable future. I can’t imagine upper-mid-table teams will ever stop loving that, so 5m-7m seems a perfectly reasonable fee in the future.

Maybe there's something we mere mortals are missing

And in fact he’s amazing and could solve our defensive frailties. I’m not convinced yet but as soon as he’s a Chelsea player he has my full support.

by Famouscfc on Jan 13, 2012 8:06 PM GMT up reply actions

I certainly think he'll be better when not paired with Zat Knight.

I honestly hope he can get a few games off both JT and DL, when they need rest. I really think JT’s error-prone-ity this season has been due to his playing all the time. I know he’s captain, but he needs to rest occasionally. Cahill is probably going to be the third-choice CB, allowing Brani to be the first-choice RB.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 13, 2012 8:24 PM GMT up reply actions

I could live with that...

And with 2 CB injuries we’d still be in a position to slide Brani back into the middle and play Bosingwa on the right.

My preference, though, would be to sell Bosingwa, buy a new RB and relegate Ivanovic to a permanent bench position (not really bothered who is 3rd or 4th CB between him and Cahill)

by deg0ey on Jan 13, 2012 8:50 PM GMT up reply actions

Honestly, I think I could live with Brani, Paulo, and the Bossman at RB until the summer.

I don’t really see much value right now, and they’re not really bad enough to warrant immediate replacement. I’d much rather use the RB money on a forward of some sort.

Yeah, I was thinking more in the medium-term

As in; between the summer and whenever Kalas/Bruma are ready to take over

by deg0ey on Jan 13, 2012 10:46 PM GMT up reply actions

It's not impossible not to support him once he's become a Chelsea player

although since he’s not officially our player yet this maybe is the last chance I can still rant how much this transfer displeases me, and how disappointed I am to see this happen (eventually)

glad

he finally signed, allegedly, i’m sure he’ll get playing time with Iva gone and the whole Terry allegedly racially abusing Anton. I definitely agree we are paying to much for a back up. By the way have you guys heard about the rumors we’re going after Hazard this transfer window? are there any truths? is it likely that we can get him this early?

by CardinaLnGold on Jan 13, 2012 8:11 PM GMT reply actions

RE: Hazard

I’d guess we’re making a play, but it doesn’t strike me as being particularly likely to succeed. Lille are competing for a CL spot in Ligue 1 and losing Hazard would make that awkward

by Graham MacAree on Jan 13, 2012 8:15 PM GMT up reply actions

make sense

i would also figure that Lille would want some sort of bidding war for his services in the summer.

by CardinaLnGold on Jan 13, 2012 8:23 PM GMT up reply actions

I think if a team threw enough cash at them, they'd let him go.

Probably way too much, but they probably have a price.

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 13, 2012 8:29 PM GMT up reply actions

except he'd be better

A lot of people are worried about spending a lot of money on a player who would likely need to be paid quite high wages. I reckon if AVB wants it enough that RA will part with a lot of money we should do it.

FFP isn’t free of loop holes and we have an owner that’s constantly getting richer

by Famouscfc on Jan 13, 2012 9:41 PM GMT up reply actions

Sort of like when we paid too much for Nando to avoid a bidding war last summer.

Had we not bought him in January, there’s a large chance he’d have gone elsewhere in the summer, which, in hindsight, would probably have been better. : |

I’d rather overpay for Hazard now than see him go to Real for a lower amount in the summer. I’d rather go for someone else, I guess, but I’d take an overpay.

i see your point

plus with all the talent that’s out there, i think its a safe assumption that we can get at least one of them, maybe more. what are the odds that hazard, goetze, eriksen, lucas moura wind up in the same club.

by CardinaLnGold on Jan 13, 2012 8:35 PM GMT up reply actions

Almost zero

Because they wouldn’t all get to be starters.

However the chance of 4 clubs being interested and therefore none of them ending up here (For example: Götze stays in Munich, Hazard goes to City, Eriksen goes to United and Lucas goes to Real) would be much higher :p

by deg0ey on Jan 13, 2012 8:55 PM GMT up reply actions

Obv. meant staying in Germany, not Munich when talking about Götze

I could see him either staying at Dortmund or moving to Munich and ended up typing half of each possibility

YES!

Someone in my office referenced the troll toll to me today and it was the highlight of my day (my bonus check was, until I learned that they made a mistake and overpaid it- boo!).

by alynne4307 on Jan 14, 2012 1:04 AM GMT up reply actions

Of course have to watch how the season plays out for Dortmund

but from what we’ve heard and seen so far, Götze, unlike many, if not most young German talents, aren’t so much inclined to land at Bayern München, at least not at this stage of his career. Which is not so unsurprising, given the circumstances they want him so much

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Jan 13, 2012 10:18 PM GMT up reply actions

It's sort of like Hazard and Lille.

Dortmund will sell to a foreign club, which is why PSG aren’t a contender for Hazard.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 13, 2012 10:31 PM GMT up reply actions

That wasn't clear.

Neither club will sell to a national rival.

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 13, 2012 10:31 PM GMT up reply actions

They will prefer to sell to a foreign rival

but not every German player grown up in the Bundesliga will want to move abroad necessarily. Many dream of going to Bayern, or at least pretend. And most German clubs (Schalke, Stuttgart e.g.) do actually care for what the player wants, unlike some other clubs (no offending intended)

Stupid, stupid Chelsea

Paying Cahill more per week than Mata, Sturridge, Ramires, Luiz or Brana? ?I make it closer to 90,000 per week and were I in Mata’s boots I’d be VERY upset considering my ability is seemingly worth far less than a mediocre CB who hasn’t even managed to look the best of a frankly dire Bolton defence. I don’t think Mata or Danny would even be being greedy if they immediately slapped in a transfert request and were I their agents I’d be fuelling the fires even as myself and a lifelong Chelsea fan. In which world is Cahill and his questionable ability a better bet than all those players?

We supposedly held out because we want to curb wages, yeah? Then why risk it by keeping Mata and Ramires reasonable and wreck it by paying way over the odds for a player with nothing even approaching the talent of most players at the club that he’s earning a lot more than? It makes Gourlay and Roman look like desperate fools over Cahill and doesn’t offer anything going forwards by comparison whatsoever-Cahill’s been awful this season and this news SHOULD wind up those playters more talented but undewr paid compared to GC and since they had to negotiate with FFP why didn’t it have a bearing on ~Cahill’s wages?

We look stupid and we deserve to be hauled over the coals by the better players earning less than Cahill-seriously, it’s not the same as p[aying 15million and 50,000 per week because people will already have accepted lower wages than they expected from Chelsea in this drive while Cahill got what he wanted. It’s a joke and the rider being how poor the actual player is and how comp-letely lost he’s been this season even by his own low standards. Had luiz been playing like Cahill this season I assure you he’s have been killed by now. He’s been sloppy buty not close to ~Cahill’s calamitous season, nowhere near at all and those knocking Sidesahow will soon pray for him back when this “cheap” signing costs us a bomb by making sure we go out of the CL and miss out on foiurth spot.

I was gutted with some previous signings but this is the worst, if they pay GC anything over 50,000 per wk , that I can ever recall in terms of it’s possible knock on effects. To me it comes down, simply, to how bad GC’s been this season and, also, the risk that we’re overpaying him. now what would we have to pay Hazard or an actual footballer should we try for them? Won’t be long, either, before these silly wages make sure we have a lot ofg drssing room unrest. ?How would you feel as Mata on 65,000 when GC gets 90.000 and the club had told you they had to curb contracts when sorting yours out? the bottom line is poisonous and they should have managed to keep any extra very quietly in a signing bonus that nobody EVER heard about. Footballers are all abouty cash, like it or not, and IO fear Cahaill getting so much too much could murder us.

by mastiffchild on Jan 13, 2012 9:30 PM GMT reply actions

Remember, though, we probably got him cheap because of his contract situation.

It’s still an overpay, but not nearly as much as it seems.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 13, 2012 9:43 PM GMT up reply actions

Not from the financial aspect

but I also wonder, like mastiffchild, if this could have an impact on the whole wage structure of Chelsea. It’s not so unlikely other players will come knocking on the door for a pay rise. Though I think it will happen for Mata for or less, regardless of what Cahill would be paid

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Jan 13, 2012 10:19 PM GMT up reply actions

I don't really agree on that.

In football, wages aren’t really a reflection of quality, and not every player wants to milk the club for every penny.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 13, 2012 10:37 PM GMT up reply actions

It's not really a thing of quality

but is it out of the cloud to say there is a possibility that one player sees “Oh the wage cap gets up I want that amount, too”?

And I don’t see how players shouldn’t try to get the highest wages for them possible. It’s utterly natural they wanna get as much as they can

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Jan 13, 2012 10:44 PM GMT up reply actions

We don't know what the wage cap is at Chelsea.

It could be that Mata and Sturridge aren’t being forced to take less by it. A lot of players just want less than they could probably get.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 13, 2012 10:49 PM GMT up reply actions

We don't know - I agree

I didn’t mean my post in a special reference to Cahill since I don’t believe Cahill broke our salary cap – but the players could know of it. It wouldn’t be out of the realm to suggest players know it. Not every player in a team tries to play out all their cards in wage negotiations, but then, I didn’t mean the whole team revolting and rebelling. There could be one … or two individuals coming out and trying to get a pay rise themselves. Of course it’s all rumours, but seeing how some things turned out at Chelsea in the past 5 years I wouldn’t be surprised if in some cases that is what exactly happened

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Jan 13, 2012 10:53 PM GMT up reply actions

The guys you're talking about are all on long-term contracts

They can complain and submit transfer requests all they want – this isn’t going to matter for another four years

by Graham MacAree on Jan 13, 2012 9:43 PM GMT up reply actions

Also

The maths here is £23,000,000/(5.5*52) = £80,419.58/week. Realistically, it’s the Mirror being given the £80K figure and then building £23M from that.

by Graham MacAree on Jan 13, 2012 10:14 PM GMT up reply actions

I can't see him really getting all five-and-a-half years of it anyway.

By the time it finishes, he’ll be 31, so it’s not like this is his last contract. If he earns another one here, he’ll be worth it, and if not, he’ll still be saleable. Basically, I don’t see how it really matters. If he sucks, it’s not like will be stuck with him forever. Mid-table sides have no limit to their love of washed of England internationals. Of course, it would be better if the wage turns out to be less than 80k, but I’m not too bothered, really.

The way I've decided to look at this

Is that it’s better for me if Chelsea pay Cahill more. Given that after the first £150,000/year people working in the UK pay 50% of their earnings in tax, the more Abramovich pays Cahill, the more money goes towards reducing the national debt.

Obviously Cahill’s contribution isn’t gonna make any real difference, but it makes me feel a little better about Chelsea overpaying him :p

by deg0ey on Jan 13, 2012 10:52 PM GMT up reply actions

Didn't the UK raise tax on high earners in the past few years so that all...

…footballer’s wages went up to accommodate for it?

Ignore the tabloid figure. They just make them up. Read the telegraph tomorrow. They have a great track record and seem to have a reliable source at Chelsea. The independent were saying the real figures were between 50 and 80 a few days ago. My firm belief is its under 60,000. Wait and see.

I'm drinking a nice aged Bordeaux

and eating some spicy thai food. I’m in a decent mood, enough to accept that this may have gone through with higher wages than I had thought would be smart (not confirmed, I know).

That said, I’ll not only hope for the best for Cahill while in a blue jersey, I will hope for the best FROM Cahill. If he is making higher wages than our top performer (Mata, as far as I am concerned), then he better play to earn his keep. We can’t afford many more mistakes in his position at the moment, so as unfair as it probably is, my expectations are a bit higher for his performance. But then, I always was on the side that believes keeping a clean sheet means that at least you didn’t lose (how very Serie A of me- funny).
