Chelsea FC Transfer News: Bid For Alex Confirmed, Gary Cahill Still In Negotiations
You know what's underrated? How annoying the twin Alex and Gary Cahill sagas are. At the start of the season, Chelsea had four available, Premier League quality centre halves to pick from. That's plenty of depth even if a player went down with an injury. Now they have two, Alex hasn't been available for something like the past three months, and the Gary Cahill transfer still isn't done.
Many of us were sold on the Cahill deal as a relatively cheap home-grown player replacement for a competent, aging Brazilian, and that was fine, but the reality of this deal is that the longer it goes on the more risk of something disastrous happening in the centre of the defence. We've already seen Jose Bosingwa as a centre back against Tottenham Hotspur, a bizarre and terrifying move that miraculously worked out ok, and we nearly got the same again when John Terry went down against Portsmouth in our 3rd round FA Cup tie.
So I think I speak for most Chelsea fans when my response to Andre Villas Boas saying this:
From what I know from my chief executive, there has been an approach from a Premier League club [for Alex]. We have respected Alex's transfer request so the market's open for him.
We're just trying to reach the level of proposal we think is good for the player. Nothing has happened up to now, but we'll listen to all offers. We'll present anything to the player. He has to make a decision. He has generated interest from a lot of clubs.
and this:
[Cahill is still] an ongoing negotiation, not that we don't want it resolved as soon as possible. I'm sure that all of the parties are protecting their interests.
is HURRY THE [FUN] UP ALREADY. We're wasting time when we can't really afford to, and if Gary Cahill's demanding crazy wages you should have realised that earlier and never gotten yourselves into this mess. I'm fine with Alex as the fourth choice centre back. I'm ok with Cahill there too. I'm not ok with having no fourth choice while Branislav Ivanovic is hurt. This is really really stupid and it needs to end now. So get it done!
PS: The Premier League club in for Alex is believed to be Queens Park Rangers.

True...
but if I have to pick a never-ending transfer saga, I would rather it involve the Hazards and Goetzes of the world. In the end, all these sagas suck; I just like my poison a little more interesting than a third choice center back.

Yeah, and some
paper yesterday said Cahill would be a Chelsea player in 24 hours … OK to be fair to him he’s still some hours left … :P
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
They've been saying that for a week.

If you simply redefine an hour as seven hours, you can! : )

If I can tell my brain
not to troll me if I didn’t get myself to sleep after 12 hours of my new defined hour, then it would be all OK! :D

I believed the Spanish saving bank
were going to “loan” him to the European Central bank!

Medical
It was reported last night on tv that he had undergone a medical-but not sure where they got that information.
Must say I'd have dodged the bullet
with Cahill already and said “sod you”. If he wants to be a player at a side challenging for titles year in, year out then this kind of greed is a bit weak and discouraging and coming from possibly the worst CB in the Prem this season(MILES, MILES worse than David Luiz who seems crucified by every pundit lauding Cahill for Chelsea!!)it’s more than puzzling.
It worries me and shows he doesn’t either have the ambition needed or the desire for the club that we would want a player to have when supposedly “wanting” to come to us. If the difference between what he gets now and the 50,000 we can(seriously cannot see him getting anything like what Mata gets as it would totally mean I’d be slapping in a transfer request if I was Juan, Danny or Ramires and Cahill was getting even close to what I was!! Giving Cahill any more than the fifty a week would destabilise the club and for such an avegrage player it’s not worth wrecking FFP edicts.
I dunno if it goes quite as deep as your last paragraph
but…. it certainly does NOT put a good taste in the mouth of Chelsea fans. Well, except for those strange persons that seem to think paying him 120k a week is well worth it (a few of them exist and baffle me to no end).
I always thought Cahill wanting 120.000 a week was a baseless rumour
but it turned out it had substance to it? Oh my God

Agreed
I know that negotiations can take awhile, but this has been stuck on “almost finished” mode for weeks now. It’s not like it’s been progressively going anywhere. At some point, someone needs to concede, or cut their losses. Heck, most fans would probably prefer the alternative options at this rate. And if it is about wages, whatever we offer has got to be an upgrade… if he thinks he is worth what Luiz gets paid, let alone Mata, then I have some unfortunate news for him.
Anyone else thinking that if Alex gets a little more regular playing time that he is going to remind us about his awesome free kicks? Not massively worried, but it would be a bit ironic if it turned up against Chelsea. And especially if it was while with QPR (whom I believe I now hate a fair amount).
i prefered the alternative options from the beginning
If this deal fell through and we were to get, i dunno, neven subotic instead and it was all done before our next game, i would be a happy fan

we never close transfer deals in a timely fashion
or at least wehaven’t in the last year or so
ramires, luiz, torres, lukaku, modric, cahill. meireles went down to the final minute.
Not Lukaku
And Cahill isn’t completed yet.

Yeah, but...
Meireles and Torres both started officially pretty late in the window. Cahill has been in progress since before the window began, and now we’re already half way through the month. It has seemingly been on the part of him and his agents seeking something Chelsea isn’t giving. While that seems like an obvious statement, what I mean to say is “WTF does he think he deserves that he isn’t getting with Chelsea?!?!” If he doesn’t like it, stop effing holding out and pursue another deal damnit. ’Arry would LOVE to have him, apparently.
Exactly!
If it’s wages, then it’s probably a combination of him thinking he’s better than he is and us being Chelsea. Because if he was talking to Tottenham instead, either he would’ve accepted the wages they offered him or they would’ve told him to fuck off.
If it’s something like playing time, can’t we just lie and tell him he’ll start most games? If he becomes a disruptive personality by the summer I don’t think anyone will be sad to see him offloaded and replaced by someone better….
Please don't sell Alex to QPR.
I loathe them and most of their fan base. I want them relegated.

Oh damn
It’s best to see him in another EPL team than back to Brazil.

"Vamos Fluzão, vamos ganhar
Eu sou do clube tantas vezes campeão!
Vim pra torcer, vim pra gritar
E por você a vida inteira vou cantar!"
When you put both of them together in one article
it just occurred to me (yeah I know, I am slow) that Cahill is not better than Alex in any respect (except maybe having better English and thus a chance to really understand Terry’s screaming ‘bloody f..g hell’ to him), so why are we doing this monkey transfer business again? … Looks like much ado about nothing. Don’t we have some real needs?Where are the real January transfer activities?
The biggest difference is that one has handed-in his transfer request and been thus exiled
I don’t think transfer has ever been presented as anything other than a straight swap/replacement for Alex…
Then, assuming Alex leaves and Cahill comes
….we will be back to square one… Great! I am still hoping for some surprise at the end of the month….
Can we tell him to [FUN] off instead, and get a CB that would actually improve us?
He’s not worth all of this negotiation. Either he comes and gets a respectable wage of 60k/week or he can go have FUN with himself.
Alex
I think if we thought Alex was going to help us then we would have kept him. I think his injuries have made him half the player he was, and how can you risk him being who you rely on.
Alex is quite unreliable
Cahill’s homegrown, younger, and a pretty similar player otherwise to Alex. Except for thunderbolt free kicks, but that can’t be helped really. He’s really only going to be what,3rd choice? Behind JT and Luiz with Ivanovic on the right? He’ll give JT a break whenever necessary.
What if no team buys him this jan?
Would he be in a position to dictate his terms in summer? if this drags till the summer transfer window…
I reckon, we might even agree his demands then…
Cheers,
Rohi D

if this drags until the summer
i can guarantee you, we will get another CB who’s quality surpasses that of Gary Cahill. I’m talking about Mats Hummels or Neven Subotic. Cahill got the impression he is an all world talent, thanks to the English media overblowing another average English player.
by CardinaLnGold on Jan 13, 2012 4:03 AM GMT up reply actions
That wouldn't be on Cahill's merit alone ...
English palyers are generally overblown by the English media besides some little exceptions (e.g. if they’re Chelsea players) – and funnily – it doesn’t even stop when England yields catastrophic results in international tournaments! :D

So they don’t blow up the whole thread: specifically, Rule 3
I could live with all of those rules
Especially rule 2 (a particular annoyance of mine). I’ve never understood why people use “This” or “Rec’d” rather than just clicking the Rec button.
Honestly, I prefer to let people know who's given them a Rec.
I mostly do it in GameThread situations, where just giving the Rec and not saying anything will generally mean they miss it all together.

Many commenters might not be noticing
that some rec’d them at all, so dropping a comment might be more a token of appreciation. Or it’s just weird little me
Oh no it seems. I look up
