Chelsea FC Transfer News: AVB Confirms McEachran Loan Deal 'Almost Done'

Photo

Sounds like it's just about time for Josh McEachran to escape the basket. McEachran's been claiming via Twitter that he's set to go out on loan, and now we've got confirmation from Andre Villas-Boas that the young midfielder will be sent away for some seasoning this window:

The only one we have outlined to loan is Josh McEachran and a deal is almost done for him.

-Source: Telegraph.

Star-divide

My initial reaction: Thank goodness. Although Andre Villas-Boas has made strides that Carlo Ancelotti did not - the introduction of 20-year-old Oriol Romeu and 22-year-old Daniel Sturridge to the first team is a major positive step - the exclusion of McEachran from games he could easily be featuring in coming off the bench has been incredibly frustrating. Josh is too good of a talent to be stuck on the bench or out of the squad entirely, and it's depressing that we've barely been able to watch him this year.

That said, I'm not entirely sure that this is the manager's fault. There've been days where it looked as though Josh was primed to get an appearance if Chelsea had things under control only for the game to remain close for too long. The collapse against Bayer Leverkusen in the penultimate match of the Champions League group stages robbed him of a certain start against Valencia. McEachran's Carling Cup runouts were curtailed by red cards to Alex and Ross Turnbull. Playing him against Portsmouth would have resulted in him being cup-tied for a potential loan team.

So, there are excuses galore Villas-Boas can use. The problem is that none of them are that convincing. Romelu Lukaku and Ryan Bertrand* have both been under-utitlised to a point that's almost criminal, especially with Ashley Cole being so overworked and Fernando Torres being so himself. Sure, we probably overrate our youth, but they're not going to do anything unless we give them a chance, and it's massively annoying that some of the brightest stars the academy has produced aren't getting them.

*Nickname nomination: The Three Basketeers.

A loan, then, is perfect. Scuttlebutt suggests Swansea, and that sounds more or less perfect as far as I'm concerned. They try to play the sort of football that Josh is most suited to and don't appear to be particularly concerned about a relegation battle. Bolton Wanderers and Aston Villa have also been sounded out as possible destinations, but they seem less plausible thanks to Bolton's league position and Alex McLeish respectively.

Ultimately, no matter where McEachran ends up, I just want to see him play. Please, please, please get on the pitch, Josh. You're one of our great hopes for the future and we need you to come good.

Completely agree. Especially with the 3rd paragraph after the jump.

Bertrand is the one I get the frustrated the most about. He’s been more than decent in every game he’s played. Give him a chance in the prem and give Cole a rest. Is that too much to ask?

by Valens on Jan 10, 2012 6:03 PM GMT reply actions

I'm right there with you

I’d actually be pretty happy if Cole picked up a silly straight red or something

Surely avb knows all of this.

Possibly he knows he can only get away with shafting one or two of the old stock at a time without a backlash from cet players and also fans who don’t know what they are on about. Also media would have a field day hyping it all up just to sell their story. Just my opinion.

by Smac84 on Jan 10, 2012 7:46 PM GMT up reply actions

BS

Sorry that’s total BS. Give me any proof of that. AVB has made two young players fixtures on this team. He has no issue not playing Lamaprd in big games. Ferraira makes the bench because he can play all over the pitch. He can play anywhere in the back 6 spots and he could also be used as cover as a right sided forward/MF if needed.

I want to see more Bertand but Ferraira has played in one game IIRC and that’s because of a red card.

by Kman23 on Jan 11, 2012 7:29 PM GMT up reply actions

Ferraira has played in two games

and I think that Valens is being a little sarcastic and humorous there. Take a deep breath, and step away from the keyboard!

finally!

Over the past few seasons, every Josh appearance, no matter how brief, has left me wanting to see more. Now we all get to see him hopefully every weekend, and now I have a legitimate reason to watch every Swansea game for the remainder of the season.

Three Basketeers!

Love it.

I’m amazed this is taking so long. I mean, Swansea first talked about wanting him back in the fall. I wonder what they are haggling over? I also wonder how much say Josh has in the process himself.

This is definitively good news

looking forward to seeing him getting more game time this break! Very happy reading this; even better news than any transfer news

Terrible sign of our state of youth development

We watch every week while craving some exciting, attractive footbaqll as promised by our supposedly youth trusting young manager and we do this while Josh ans chums stay in the basket. We do this while great servants(like SFL)and new try-hard-manage-nothings(Raul)and those with a different job to do(Ramires and Romeu)manage to NOT play any attacking or attractive stuff.

We’re left with a window where we cry out for a CM with technical ability to unlock tight defences and get us going in general and there’s no sign of one being signed at all and then we send away our only current squad memeber(short of wasting Mata in the role)capable of any creation whatsoever after having ignored him all season. Sure, a loan might be Ok for Josh but for a Chelsea team he should already have had a decent chance in? Not sure about that and the contiued lack of chances for our talented kids means Vargas goes to Naplees and not to us-what do kids have to do, above what they must at Utd or Barca, to get a shot at our club?

If Josh gets a shot at Swansea I’d be hard pressed to be able to tell him to EVER come back. What guarantee is there that he’ll get a go in our side even if he plays amazingly well at Swansea? Sturridge ould hardly have scored more goals in a weaker than average Bolton team last season’s end yet he plays out wwide for us. If Raul and Lampard aren’t creating enough right now why does Josh have to go out to another club to show what he can do? If he plays really well he’s not going to be doing it for us and will be doing it elsewhere while nobody HERE can do it at all. The sad thing is that he hasn’t been trusted here even with older players failing week in and week out to provide the ammo for Danny, Mata and Torres-so will doing well for a low to mid table team suddenly make us trust him enough to get a berth in the first team? I doubt it and even if he does we will not play him where we should or where he’s best. Our lack of faith in our kids is the worst in the footbaLL WORLD. We don’t ssort it out and I see a point where the sense in keeping the academy may already have passed as rright now it’s a total waste of time, money and kids dreams.

How will we ever know if a kid is good enough for Chelsea if he never gets a GAME for Chelsea? We were told if those in the team failed those in the squad, regardless of age, would get THEIR chance but unless you cost a great deal, get played out of position or have had the manager after you for a year or two already(Mata, Studge and Rommy respectuively)you aren’t getting a chance at all-and even when costing a bomb Lukaku has no hope to play-I’m gutted to see our only naturally creative CM player go out on loan and fail to see how, short term, it’sd anything but a weakening of our squad this season and a reduction of our options when nobody else has similar gifts to Josh at our club right now. That he hasn’t played more is disgusting to me and must really discourage all the other youth players and will be an element in the best kids continuing to go any and everywhere else.

by mastiffchild on Jan 10, 2012 10:51 PM GMT reply actions

To be honest, I'm most angry about Bertrand.

LUKAKU and Josh could be making more sub appearances, but I’m fine with Josh getting a loan and Romelu blowing up reserve opponents and getting occasional appearances this year. Bertrand, when he’s played, has been nearly as good as Ashley, and I think him getting the occasional game would be good for both. I know defenders won’t get many sub appearances, but there have been a few games where we both didn’t need our first-choice defenders and Ash looked crap. Really, if there’s anything I can’t stand about AVB, it’s that he basically plays the same XI every game, even against lowly opposition, barring injuries or suspensions. It’s maddening, really.

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 10, 2012 11:37 PM GMT reply actions

Basically the same XI?

I disagree. There have been plenty of changes throughout the season in the XI, from Torres to Drogba, from Mikel to Romeu, from the midfield rotation between Meireles and Lampard, from Bosingwa to Ivanovic, etc. The XI is never predictable.

by el chelsea fuerte on Jan 11, 2012 12:37 AM GMT up reply actions

I guess my point is that he plays a full-strength team in nearly every game.

Apart from injury or suspension, our team is pretty much always the same. With a team whose biggest problem is a loss of concentration/fatigue late in games, it doesn’t make sense to me that AVB doesn’t rest some of them in games in which they aren’t really needed. For example, Ashley Cole and John Terry have started every single game, and have been two of the worst in terms of late lapses. JT, I can sort of understand. Injuries have forced him to play, combined with Alex’ exile to Siberia. Ash, though, has a decent backup in Ryan Bertrand, who could have handled at least ONE game in the PL this year. Even in the cases where he has made a change, he often sticks to it for a while, rather than having a proper rotation. I guess it’s that he doesn’t trust the backups, but we’ve lost a lot of points late, due to fatigue, so I can’t see the benefit of playing them week in, week out, no matter the opposition.

Guys, guys, don’t forget we are trying to fight for some silverware every year...

and everyone was unhappy that we didn’t get any last year. Our owner is demanding some results, at least CL…It’s difficult to accomplish all of this while playing a lot of kids (we are not Arsenal ;-), but yeah I agree, at least 2 or 3 boys should be fielded from time to time if we want to have any future. Just there is never a good time for this since we playing like crap most of the time. I think before a new manager gets fully submerged into Chelsea they see everything in rosy pictures and always promise to play the youth, but after been there for a little while they all eventually face the music. Like a clockwork…

by MrkS on Jan 11, 2012 1:19 AM GMT reply actions

On another hand...

what do you think about ManU trusting their young goalie De Gea. Everyone is singing the songs to sir Alex for being brave with young players but this boy had already cost them some important games. We too have to decide if we would/should be brave like this on our own peril.

by MrkS on Jan 11, 2012 1:30 AM GMT up reply actions

This.

Remember when everyone was baying for the kids…and then we played them in the Carling Cup against a more senior Liverpool side and they got played off the park?

How quickly we forget…

Don't know exactly how they work it out at Chelsea

but does it seem totally farfetched to say that a manager risks less when losing with proven old players out of form or near retirement than he does when playing a youth side?

It's a "six of one" situation.

Some will prefer losing with kids, and some would prefer losing with the old guard.

Well from what I gather the majority of fans

at least those who are loudest (so not so much the majority by number but the majority by perception) seem want to lose with youngsters and I’m definitively on that side. However it could be the Chelsea hierachy prefer it the other way around.

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Jan 11, 2012 12:57 PM GMT up reply actions

I think a lot of those who are vocal about not playing youth would...

…be just as vocal about not playing the established talent.

I’d bet 1/4-1/3 of fans would prefer the youth, 1/4-1/3 the old guard, and 1/3-1/2 are ill-informed rabble who will complain based on whichever is happening at any given moment.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 11, 2012 1:10 PM GMT up reply actions

Hm I meant specifically

“losing”, meaning if I wanna see the old guard losing or a youth side losing. Of course, needless to say it’s the right decision if we play the old guard and they win (for much of last season it would be partially unfair to blame Carlo Ancelotti for not playing the youth – the so-called “old guard” had their fair share of results), or if we play the youth and they win. However we fans have much the fear that the old guard might stumble upon a dead point and a lot of us keep guessing it’s not so far from the timeline from the point on we’re currently standing

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Jan 11, 2012 2:59 PM GMT up reply actions

The trouble with that is that it would mean the management BELIEVES

they will lose with the older and more experienced (and much more costly) players. That doesn’t give much of a statement of belief, nor expected workrate of the older guys.

While I agree that it couldnt hurt to experiment in a game we’re well expected to win with some of the youth, it would seem the management is much more conservative about that and probably wants the older players to live up to their expectations.

by alynne4307 on Jan 11, 2012 7:31 PM GMT up reply actions

Clarification:

the trouble with going with the theory that they are better off trying the youth as far as losing goes, is approaching a game from a negative point of view. It sort of goes with the mentality of “well we’re gonna lose anyway, may as well do it with…”. Either way, it would be going into a game with their heads in the wrong place, so I imagine that the management team stays away from that way of thinking as much as possible.

However! Us fans certainly don’t, and so we’re left being able to throw our opinions in the ring surrounding that. I’m on the side that in some cases, it hurts more to lose with your tried and true guys than it does the youth, but that is only because it lets me deliver an excuse… it really does little for the young players’ feelings or ability to work their way into the first team. I’d ideally like to just win with both :)

by alynne4307 on Jan 11, 2012 7:37 PM GMT up reply actions

I should point out I meant the dilemma of...

…taking a loss in quality from playing the youth more often v. a loss in quality from playing the old guard so much they start to tire.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 12, 2012 1:50 AM GMT up reply actions

I want to see the youth ranks given a chance to show their stuff

You need to lose sometimes, and be played off the park by someone with 50x your experience if you’re ever going beyond “exciting prospect”

Arsenal rolled the dice with Wilshere and he was their best player by a mile against Barcelona. He wouldn’t have gotten their without a season of playing and growth and maturing.

by Culain on Jan 11, 2012 3:29 PM GMT up reply actions

However it seems the sad truth in universially everything

that whenever a loss happens, someone has to shed the blame. I just wonder secretly if that could be a little part

So tell me something about Josh

because his bit-part appearances haven’t given me enough insight to judge, what kind of a player is he PRECISELY, or what kind of player is he touted to become eventually? A silky, dextrous, high-vision, high-creativity kind of playmaker? Or simply a new improved 110% version of Lampard? [considering both are Not overlapping descriptions, please pick One?]

Never paid too much attention to Clifford; too busy gawping at McEachran. Seems like a real talent but he’s already 20… needs to get some game time in the first’s / loan club fast before we let an obvious talent rot.

by AndrewMcF on Jan 11, 2012 4:34 PM GMT up reply actions

He's got great vision and is very calm/quick on the ball.

I know Youtube highlight videos are not very good for analyzing a player, but check some out. I saw one recently that highlights Josh’s ability to thread defense-splitting passes with ease. And this is what excites me most about him; I feel like he can provide the exact type of ball that Torres thrives/thrived on.

by Joe DelGreco on Jan 11, 2012 2:05 AM GMT up reply actions

I remember that game very well...

After watching him in that game, against a fairly strong CL opponent, I understood what all the hype was about for a 17 year old midfielder. I want to say he completed like 97% of his many passes that game.

The highlight video I was referring to was this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxXHI-1AoY8

The second half of the video (I believe its a FA Youth Cup game against Wolves, but I could be wrong), really showcases his passing qualities. Some of those through balls are incredible (even though our attackers are offsides half the time)

Size/build

I made a crack about this at one point, but I wonder if it’s a valid question:

Josh is about as skinny as a rail. Are there any concerns that he’ll get knocked around because of his size and build? The guy appears to be quick, both in terms of his own movements and moving the ball. But I wonder if he’ll just get pushed around if he doesn’t bulk up a bit.

Just curious.

Regardless, I’m excited for him to go out on loan and to be able to track his progress. The skills are undeniable.

Age

He’ll fill out as he gets older.

by AndrewMcF on Jan 11, 2012 10:26 AM GMT up reply actions

I think the loan spell will be good for him

though I wonder if it will be unfortunate for Chelsea in some way. Watching the videos above (because I haven’t gotten to see him play about anything) he definitely has a knack for a good through pass on the ground. I am curious if he has other skills in the creative department, such as chipping or free kick specialties and what not? While we could certainly use the through ball, maybe if he lacks in some of those other areas it would be reason for AVB and staff to hesitate to use him? I have no idea, honestly- you all would know better than I do about his skillset… just trying to imagine what it was that caused him to see as little playing time as he did. It does make one wonder.

Anyway, best of luck to him at Swansea, except against Chelsea :) I have a feeling their manager will want to nurture him, despite the move being only temporary. That whole playing football with Rodgers’s son thing could go a long way.

by alynne4307 on Jan 11, 2012 4:49 AM GMT reply actions

He won't be allowed to play against us, as a loanee.

As for the highlight videos, remember they’re just that. He has a history of being pushed off the ball by big defenders and being made anonymous. It’s especially true when he starts, and isn’t fresh against a tired defence. He’s still 18, so he needs some time to finish developing before he can make an impact on a consistent basis. He’s good, but he needs some time at a place like Swansea to develop properly.

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 11, 2012 5:46 AM GMT up reply actions

That's what I was thinking

Re my question above re size/build. Getting pushed off the ball is my biggest concern with Josh. Everything else looks solid.

by ChelseaDC on Jan 11, 2012 3:17 PM GMT up reply actions

Ahhh...

I wasnt sure if that was a hard and fast rule for loanees or just something worked out in the agreement (like regular contracts). That is good, at least :)

Thanks for giving me more info on him. I agree, the highlight videos were only that.. just wished they were a bit more well rounded, but they were specific to games, so I suppose that is what you get. I think it will be great for him to have a loan spell to help mature him as a player even further- everyone has room for improvement, so some regular playing time would do him good before having to step in as a regular for Chelsea.

by alynne4307 on Jan 11, 2012 7:41 PM GMT up reply actions

It's not automatic or anything, but top teams will pretty much always throw that into...

…loan contracts. We had one with both Wigan and Bolton for the PvA and Kakuta loans, not that they’d have played anyway.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 12, 2012 1:53 AM GMT up reply actions

I fail to see a scenario where this could turn out to be unfortunate for Chelsea...

Best case: he does a Sturridge or Wilshere or Cleverley and he slots into next year’s midfield
So-so case: we realize he needs more development and gets loaned out again next season
Worst case: he pulls a Kakuta and we realize that he may not be everything that we’ve wished of and upon him – and he goes off on another loan or we cash in on his transfer valuation

by DPeezy on Jan 11, 2012 6:18 AM GMT up reply actions

Can only really see best case

AVB has a vision for the future and I feel that a central midfielder will probably leave to make CDM: Romeu
CM: Ramires CM: Josh

by AndrewMcF on Jan 11, 2012 11:08 AM GMT up reply actions

Right...

I meant more for right now. If he were ready to step in (again, others have seen more of him than I have, so I am in no place to say if he is ready or could use some more development), and if he was just the type of player needed in our midfield, it would be a bummer to send him on loan when we could actually use him. Good for him, less good for Chelsea in the immediate future. Not like “terrible for Chelsea”… just could be one of those cases of hindsight, like “hey… that game could have used JM’s through passes, too bad we couldnt put him in the game”.

That said, AVB hasnt made much use of him yet, so that may well be his statement on that. I imagine there was something preventing him from putting him in the lineup a bit more. And it is stifling to have him sit in the basket forever and wouldn’t do Chelsea any good in the long run.

Nightmare is right!

This hurts my head. There are other teams I’d merge with before that one. Liverpool pre-Suarez debacle and Lucas injury… so long as we somehow magically brought back Alonso. And booted half of KK’s new signings. Clearly Chelsea’s PR team would be the one to keep.

I know that this would instead be Maiev’s nightmare team. I suppose we couldnt please everyone, haha.

by DPeezy on Jan 11, 2012 6:01 PM GMT up reply actions

Swansea not Bolton

I don’t want Josh going near Bolton. Yes, last year Sturridge’s loan there took him from prospect to lead goal scorer but Bolton is going down and they’re desperate to stay up. No way does a manager risk relegation and his job on a youth prospect that’s not even his prospect. No way will Josh start often at Bolton. Swansea, Norwich, and Wolves are my first, second and third preference respectively. If we can’t get him to one of those teams I’d rather see him loaned to Ligue 1 or to a Championship team in the promotion fight (West Ham, Cardiff, Reading, Hull City, Leeds).

by Kman23 on Jan 11, 2012 7:35 PM GMT reply actions

I would say this would be accurate if Josh were not better than most of their starters

That said, I don’t think Bolton is going in for him, but if they were, I think it would only be with the intention of using him at this point. Kakuta probably isnt near the level that Josh is, thus his lack of playing time there. Now, Wigan and PvA may have fit your bill about relegation teams and youth, but that is probably another puzzling case, being that he may well be better than some of their starters.. but I’ve no idea on him, really.
