Chelsea Vs. Bayer Leverkusen, UEFA Champions League 2011: Preview
So, with Sunderland dispatched, Chelsea return to Stamford Bridge to entertain Michael Ballack Bayer Leverkusen for their first Champions League game of the season. This, of course, is the prize for finishing in the top four last season, something Blues fans were desperate for when the team began scuffling in winter, and now that it's here... well, now that we don't have to worry about the ignominy of finishing in fifth place, it's all too easy to remember how pointless the group stages are.
That's no slight against the quality of the opposition we'll be facing - Leverkusen and Valencia are both very good sides that we shouldn't underestimate, but the group stages are designed to bore the top teams on the way to the knockout stages, where the real fun begins. Chelsea will progress, and knowing that makes these matches rather less thrilling than they might have been otherwise.
But hey, Michael Ballack's back. Aces.
Anyway, Leverkusen currently stand fourth in the Bundesliga, with ten points from five games. They're a pretty good side, although they're not in the same class as either Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund, and they'll probably give Chelsea some problems in midfield, where the double pivot of Lars Bender and Simon Rolfes should be able to keep Frank Lampard and Raul Meireles at play. Further ahead, we should probably hope that nostalgia propels Ballack into a starting role, because the Germans have looked much better with Andre Schürrle in the midfield rather than the former Blues stalwart.
The midfield is the most interesting tactical battle between the two sides, and Andre Villas-Boas may choose to match Leverkusen's 4-2-3-1 to lock up the centre and instead focus on the flanks. Ashley Cole was back to something approximating his best against Sunderland and with Jose Bosingwa experiencing a renaissance under the new manager Chelsea can hit any team hard down the wings. Their visitors on Tuesday won't be an exception.
Both Juan Mata and Daniel Sturridge were brought off early in Chelsea's 2-1 win over Sunderland, and so it wouldn't be any sort of shock to see one or both play again on Tuesday. If I had to guess, it'd be Sturridge, with Mata rested for the Manchester United match over the weekend. Florent Malouda made a reasonably impressive cameo at the Stadium of Light, and he probably deserves a start here.
With David Luiz back to full fitness, Ramires suspended for that red card against Manchester United and both Michael Essien and Didier Drogba unavailable due to injuries, Chelsea's lineup begins to fall into place:
Chelsea (4-3-3): Petr Cech; Ashley Cole, John Terry, David Luiz, Jose Bosingwa; John Obi Mikel, Raul Meireles, Frank Lampard; Florent Malouda, Fernando Torres, Daniel Sturridge.
The big question is Fernando Torres. The striker had started the season in reasonable form, but looked absolutely dire in his substitute appearance on Saturday. With Romelu Lukaku not on the Champions League squad and Nicolas Anelka ineffective as a main striker, however, Chelsea are probably just going to have to grin and bear it and see if the Spaniard can turn things around. Unelss they want to go with Salomon Kalou which hahahahahaha no.
Anyway, join us here on Tuesday at 7:45 PM BST (2:45 PM EST), and we'll have a nice friendly game thread for you to enjoy. And, hopefully, a 2-0 victory.

Further Assistance
The links on this site are probably illegal in the US, and I’m not saying I condone any sort of illegal activity, but you could always just, ahem, “hypothetically” find links to watch a live stream of the game online. If streaming was definitely legal, which I’m not sure it is, then I might really like:
http://www.footballstreaming.info/
because they have multiple links for every game, so it’s really easy to find one that’s high quality and works in your browser.
Hypothetically speaking of course.

You could also just get the Foxsoccer.tv App for the iPhone/iPad
I believe it’ll have the CL streaming. You can prepay for the whole year, or just pay $7.99 for a month whenever (it’s 19.99/month if you also want to stream it on their website).
I'm quite pleased about the timing of this game
It gives us an extra chance to make sure everybody is happy with the system ahead of next weekend. It also serves as the perfect opportunity for David Luiz to work on his fitness and see whether he’ll be ready for United or if we’d be better off going with someone else in the middle at the moment.
I’d hope to see Torres given the start (he’s never looked good coming off the bench) and I would expect us to win this one easily.
I’d have loved to see Lukaku start this game and let Torres rest for Man U. Torres has something on Vidic so his value in the starting lineup is much greater for the Man U game than the first group stage game.
With that being said, we can’t sleep on this group. Valencia or Leverkusen could steal a game against us if we aren’t awake. They’re both decent teams.
Except Lukaku can't play in the CL until in the spring
since he was not included in the CL squad. I’d be interested to see Anelka and Sturridge switched though with Studge up the middle and Anelka on the right flank where he sometimes performs well even if he is EVEr soo sloooow to release the ball sometimes. Anelka and Malouda are both unfortunately turning into ballhoggers wich is a recipe for disaster considering they have less than zero penetration… gah..
A guy that likes the texans but live all the way over in Sweden

"Turning" into ballhoggers?
Anelka has always been one, if anything, he’s gotten better at setting up others.
Malouda, otoh, does seem to suffer from it more and more. Of course, if he’d just put it in some of his long shots, we wouldn’t be complaining.
Alright 2:45 start time!! not earlier in the morning as usual!
I’m very excited about the possiblilty of Luiz being back in the starting 11. Maybe he can get his rust shaken off during this game and be ready for the Man U game coming up. I really realllllllly wish Lukaku would have been on the roster. I think there would have been plenty of chances for him to get valuable game experience throughout the group. We better see Josh get plenty of playing time. Leverkusen aren’t a bad team, so we definitely don’t need to look past them, but I agree with you Graham I think it will be 2-0.

Valencia vs Chelsea UEFA Championship
This match is going to be great because of the teams, both are good and really compete each other in the field. First of all Valencia that has held a 2-2 draw with the world’s best team FC Barcelona. Although Valencia has just won only two matches throughout UEFA champions league. Valencia is on the third position by getting 1 PTS. Although Valancia worked hard in the previous match if the league and wins by 2-1 against Barca that is quit dangerous for Chelsea. This also gives a message to Chelsea that Valancian’s are fully prepair for this match.
Valencia vs Chelsea Match Preview
Chelsea and Valancia both have won the matches played previously in the UEFA champions league. The match is now going to be super tough and this is is really important for both the teams to win for the UEFA champions trophy. Wishing both the teams ‘Good Luck’. May the best team wins…..
