Why Javier Pastore Chose Paris Saint-Germain

Photo

Last post on Javier Pastore. Promise.

As we're all more than aware, Javier Pastore elected to go to Paris Saint-Germain and not Chelsea. Most people don't seem to be too disappointed, on account of the fact that he was extremely expensive - in a previous post I pegged his annual cost to PSG at £13.3M per annum, which would have been a significant fraction (7%) of Chelsea's 2010 turnover. On the other hand, if your team is going to overpay, it might as well overpay for an actual need, and few could deny that the Blues are in dire need of someone like Pastore, if not the man himself, to shore up their midfield.

Star-divide

So losing out on the midfielder to a Ligue 1 team might be economically smart, but it's at the same time rather vexing. At least, I'm still rather cranky about it. I'm also curious about what exactly led to Pastore/Palermo picking PSG over Chelsea. Was it the compensation offered to the player? Was it Zamparani and co. preferring the transfer fee offered by the Parisians? Something else?

Option three, says Pastore. At least, so say Goal.com, and I'm not finding it anywhere else. Since they didn't bother linking back to a real source, I'll return the favour and paraphrase - the 22-year-old claimed that PSG guaranteed him playing time, and Chelsea did not.

That's a perfectly legitimate reason to pick a club, although you'd have to wonder why Chelsea didn't simply lie through their teeth to pick him up. With an obvious hole in the midfield as well as Frank Lampard's impending however-he-ends-up-leaving, Pastore filled an obvious need, and if playing time was the only concern, Chelsea could have simply fibbed their way through things and made it up to him later. Plus, even if he wasn't first choice at Stamford Bridge, he'd have been guaranteed plenty of minutes anyway. All very odd.

I'm not sure I'm buying that explanation, and it's certainly not option one either - the wages Pastore's making at PSG are nothing Chelsea couldn't compete with. How about option two? Is that any more sensible?

Sure. Although it's been reported that Palermo were happy with both offers, that doesn't mean that one wasn't higher than the other, and PSG's was quite clearly higher than any Chelsea bid. The leaked talks about the signing could well have been designed to induce the Blues to increase their offer in light of PSG pressure, but ultimately they wouldn't budge and PSG got their man.

That makes a lot more sense than a battle about playing time. Because if that's the actual reason Pastore's going to by plying his trade the Parc de Princes rather than at Stamford Bridge, I'm pretty irritated with Chelsea.

I think we dodged the bullet

At least thats what im trying to make my self believe. He would of been very expensive and could of flopped, as well (if we believe goal) he has a lack of ambition to come to chelsea and fight for a starting 11 spot.

Move on, bring in gotze/ ganso (also what i wish we would try hamsik even though he claims he doesn’t want to move)

It seems that along with his price, Zamparini inflated his head

(assuming we believe Goal)
It’s as if he feels entitled to a starting spot, regardless of the quality of his teammates and opposition. Rather than competing with anyone for a spot in a team that can achieve prestigious trophies, he wants to cruise through as Paris’ most loved son and maybe on the way win a Ligue 1 or Europa. Even if he doesn’t win anything, the sheer gulf in quality between him and his teammates/opposition will make him look better than he is and in a few years another big club will come calling – Real, City, maybe even us again. In fact, I’d be happy with us buying him then and benching him for a full season out of spite.

I honestly don't think it comes down to Pastore being afraid of the EPL or anything like that.

I’m sure he has his reason for going to PSG instead of Chelsea. Perhaps one of the reasons was playing time, but I think it’s all water under the bridge. I hope he does well in Paris. He’s definitely a top notch player. I’m more excited that we just got Lukaku. Chelsea will get the players they need to compete.

It's just a bit frustrating that we don't know the reasons.

And yeah, it’s not like he somehow destroyed us by not coming. I’m overjoyed about Lukaku, now just waiting (and speculating) on who’s next to fill our gaps.

Hes a coward

and a mercenary that playing time reason is complete BULL

He’s just scared of getting snapped in the highest level, he was like I’ll only leave Palmero for a big club, yeah take a sideways step to a weaker league why don’t you, what a money grabber.

We don’t want anyone who is scared to compete for places, we want players who have self belief, what ever though be happy with your extra 10k or 20k a week or what ever it is playing in a weaker league and having your reputation tarnished.

If we are ever linked him to him the future I really hope we don’t sign him.

I agree with this completely

Whatever the reason, I am happy he didn’t join us. There was something about him that didn’t make me go OMGOMGOMG about his transfer like I felt for David Luiz or Lukaku for example.

I can't agree with this

I can’t fault a player for choosing a club paying him massive wages where he assumed he’d play 50+ matches a year. He’s probably right to some extent, he wouldn’t play everyday at Chelsea. For a 22 year old with aspirations of being among the best in the world, that could certainly hurt his development. It’s always nice when a player wants to fight for their place, but it’s not really cowardly to be realistic in assessing potential playing time.

by Stephen Schmidt on Aug 7, 2011 4:51 PM BST up reply actions

Not exactly cowardly, true

Being realistic is fine, but if he’s as good as he thinks he is he’d get the playing time at a big club, simply by being better than his teammates and filling a need in the formation being used. I just don’t think going to Ligue 1 from Serie A is how you become considered among the world’s best.

I just felt that he was too expensive.. This is Chelsea 2.0, and Chelsea 2.0 with AVB dont splash cash like dat. Word. A little off topic but.. Im willing to bet Mceachran gets more assists than Wilshere this season, my friends think its crazy but I really believe it. Thoughts?

by Nikeamah Dabre on Aug 7, 2011 5:11 PM BST reply actions

I can't see it

Wilshere is going to play a ton, especially if Cesc leaves. McEachran will have limited minutes with the depth Chelsea have, especially when Essien returns. I’d be doubtful that Josh is a more influential player this season, but he certainly won’t beat Wilshere in any counting stats.

by Stephen Schmidt on Aug 7, 2011 5:36 PM BST up reply actions

We Shall See.

I think in each game Mceachran plays he’ll create a goal, 15 starts? Maybe 10-15 assists… I believe in his ability/speed of thought that much.

by Nikeamah Dabre on Aug 7, 2011 6:21 PM BST up reply actions

He doesn't generally play forward enough to create like that

He’s a great passer, but he’ll probably be starting the attack rather than providing the final pass. He’s never even produced huge assist numbers at the youth or reserve levels, there’s little reason to think his role is going to change all of a sudden. With McEachran, we’ll likely always see low goal and assist numbers just due to his position.

by Stephen Schmidt on Aug 7, 2011 6:30 PM BST up reply actions

I agree with you

Even if he does play more than expected he will probably be playing in a deeper role. He will be playing balls to open up the attack. Like say through balls sending our wingers down the pitch or things like that. I just don’t think that he will have that many assists, but that’s not a knock on him. That’s just because of the position he plays.

by Noleforever9399 on Aug 7, 2011 7:44 PM BST up reply actions

Right, good point.

Assists aren’t the best way to judge a midfielder who plays in a deeper role.

by Noleforever9399 on Aug 8, 2011 6:20 AM BST up reply actions

It's almost like McEachran and Modric are similar

and that by going after Modric, we’re blocking the path of our most promising prospect (well, maybe second after Lukaku now). Boy, that would be a poor use of resources.

by Cablinasian on Aug 8, 2011 6:22 AM BST up reply actions

It sure would.

I think that they are very similar players. And while I would say that Lukaku is now our best prospect, McEachran has a bright future ahead of him and Modric would just impede his progress.

We should focus on our biggest needs, not a player who plays the same position as one of our best prospects.

Zamparini specifically said Pastore's agent was meeting with Chelsea

You have to think we were, even if it was a lesser bid than PSG had

No more Pastore. I know I’m ready to move on. I’m not going to forget!

That's an awesome video!

I’m happy for the kid, and I’m very excited about his future!

Side note-I wonder if he knows how to speak english yet?
