Chelsea at FC Kitchee, Report: Blues Impress In 4-0 Trouncing

Photo

Chelsea made it five wins from five in the pre-season with an easy 4-0 win over FC Kitchee in the first round of the Asia trophy, setting themselves up for a date with Aston Villa in the final. Frank Lampard found the net from the penalty spot before three second half goals put a gloss on the victory. It was only a friendly, of course, but it's always good to see the Blues playing well.

Despite declaring that the focus was on the 4-3-3, Andre Villas-Boas opted to field Yuri Zhirkov and Frank Lampard in a double pivot with Yossi Benayoun in the hole, a decision which turned out to be surprisingly effective. Ross Turnbull started, Slobodan Rajkovic and John Terry were paired in the centre of the defence alongside Ashley Cole and Paulo Ferreira, and the front line was the expected trio of Florent Malouda, Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou.

Unlike the previous match, which also ended up 4-0 in favour of Chelsea, the Blues never looked anything near second-best, imposing themselves on the match from the outset. Lampard, Zhirkov and Malouda each had genuine opportunities in the early stages before Kalou managed to hit the crossbar from a Didier Drogba cross in the 16th minute.

Star-divide

Despite dominating with relative ease, Chelsea didn't manage to break the deadlock until the 34th minute, mostly thanks to good work by Benayoun. The Israeli weaved between defenders in the penalty box before inevitably being brought down by Gao Wen's outstretched leg. Phil Dowd immediately pointed to the spot, and Lampard duly hit the ball right back down the middle with Wang Zhenpeng guessing to his left. Not long after that, Malouda saw a goal-bound effort cleared off the line by Daniel Cancela's elbow, which would have caused far more fuss in a game that Chelsea actually wanted to win.

1-0 at half time didn't really reflect Chelsea's dominance of the game, but that would change shortly. Malouda ran riot down the left wing, creating two goals in the fifteen minutes after the break, first seeing a low cross knocked home by Ubay Luzardo for an own goal and then sending in a looping, deflected effort that Drogba nodded in at the far post with Zhenpeng helpless.

With the Blues 3-0 up, it was time for changes. In a press conference on Tuesday, Andre Villas-Boas had revealed that only five substitutes were allowed, so it was a bit of a surprise when seven were used. Only Ferriera, Cole, Benayoun and Kalou remained on the pitch as the manager rang in the changes, introducing the likes of Josh McEachran and Fernando Torres to the fray.

It was Daniel Sturridge, however, who was most impressive, the England under-21 international capping off the evening with a remarkable goal in the 75th minute. Picking up a lost cause at the far edge of the box, he pulled of a superb turn to leave the first defender scrambling before beating a second and wellying a right-footed shot past Zhenpeng from a tight angle. If Sturridge can play like that... well, there's a reason Bolton Wanderers fans fell in love with him so fast last season.

There was time yet for Fernando Torres to make his mark on the game, and a sumptuous 30-yard effort should be remembered more for the sweetness of the shot than for the fact that it missed by all of three inches, clattering back off the post with the goalkeeper well beaten. It wasn't a goal, but for those desperately looking for signs of life from the £50M man, it should quell some fears.

For those looking for signs of life from a Chelsea team who'd hd a mildly disappointing start to the pre-season... well, they were positively verdant in Hong Kong, brushing aside a not-awful team in difficult conditions. There are two matches left before the footballing year kicks off, and on this sort of form the Blues are probably wishing that they could kick off the season right now rather than in two week's time.

I'm really glad that we played well today.

Hopefully we can start out the season on a roll. I think that we should definitely hang onto Sturridge at least til January. It’s looking like he can make an impact for this season. I’m also glad that Lampard looked good today playing farther back, maybe this can be the role that he can play when/if we get Pastore. If that works then I’m all for it, as I still think that Lampard can make an impact and I think him and Pastore on the field at the same time will be a good thing.

Also happy to see us playing Villa, I think it’s good for us to have a game against better competition right before going into the season.

good effort

can’t wait to see ramires, david luiz, and hopefully pastore join this mix. sturridge looked great, and i thought kalou and yossi both were especially in the mood to attack. torres looked more relaxed and smiled a lot, and was unlucky not to score at the end.

two questions that have probably been answered a million times but for some reason i haven’t seen them yet. first, is alex not participating because he is certainly going to be sold? second, why does AVB frequently wear a wristband or armband (he did this at porto too) either on his arm or over his suit coat?

The armband thing...

…seems to be a convention among managers in Portugal – It says “Treinador” on it, which is Portuguese for coach/manager. IIRC, the Benfica manager wears one and Jose used to wear one when he was managing in Portugal.

I assume AVB still wears it because it reminds him of home. Or maybe nobody told him it’s a bit uncommon in English football.

Well whatever works right.

Alex Bunbury = good. Teal Bunbury = a colour

wow, good to know

that is a pretty unusual little quirk. i am looking through photos of jose at porto and you are exactly right. maybe AVB will continue to wear it….it’ll get EPL fans wondering what it is

Surprised, to say the least.

I was really surprised by this match. Not so much the scoreline, it’s was Kitchee, after all, but the formation.

4-2-1-3 looks like the way forward for us. Frank Lampard made me reconsider every bad thing I’ve said about him today. I think he’s just as good playing in the deep role behind an attacking midfielder than in his usual position. We still got the benefits of Frank Lampard, but he was able to help more than he usually does defensively. The position also seems less demanding on him physically. The other player who surprised me was Mikel. He looked more comfortable with a bit more attacking responsibility than I would ever have imagined. I’m starting to wonder why our previous managers haven’t thought to play them outside of their usual positions.

I’d like to see us continue with this formation, with Lampard deeper alongside Mikel/Ramires, with Benayoun or, hopefully, Pastore up front feeding the forwards. I think playing Lampard deeper will help the transition to Josh McEachran, who I think can be a backup for Lampard.

I'm starting to think this AVB guy may know what he's doing

I’ll have a much longer post about the midfield up at some point… definitely deserves some exploration

There are definitely quite a few different things that we could do in the midfield

It will be very interesting to see how AVB handles it, especially whenever Essien comes back. Not to mention if/when we get Pastore.

I'm going to have to agree with you.

It’s not just in the midfield, it’s in all the positions. Today we were getting crosses in much more effectively from both sides. Malouda didn’t look as useless as he had at times last year. I’m glad, since I actually like him. Even Ferreira, who has looked utterly rubbish for a long time, was playing decently. We still need a new right back, though.

I hate to say this, because I liked him, but AVB is making Carlo look like a bloody idiot. Granted, we weren’t the best in the first few matches of the preseason, but I’m starting to get the feeling he’s done with his experiments, and now properly getting us ready for the season. Based on today’s match, I’m pretty confident. I don’t remember such a confident-looking midfield performance last year, and that was a big part of the reason we were so poor for so long. To have seemingly solved it with no major acquisitions, although it would make it even better.

I do wonder what will happen when Essien is fit again, since he’ll be competing with Mikel and Ramires, who I think have a decent chance of being ahead of him now. Maybe we need to sell him, especially if there’s any sign he won’t be the Essien of old again.

I like this plan

But if we went this direction I would want us to have Pastore. I’m not sure that Benayoun is the answer we need at the cam position.

I'd say this is as much a sign as any that...

…we’re going to sign him. It should have been clear for all to see that today’s formation, especially considering what we did in the second half of the match the other day when we played it, is our way forward. It seems amazing to me that it’s taken this long to find a way to fit Frank Lampard into a midfield in a way which doesn’t necessarily choke off the strikers. That leaves with only one orthodox CAM, Benayoun, and a serious need for another. Given that we’re supposed to be one of the leading clubs in the race to sign one of the best players in that position now and going forward, I would be both disappointed and annoyed if we couldn’t get him. At this point, I think I’d be willing to pay low-level stupid money for him[ ~50m], since he would just fit so well. [Luckily, I don’t think we’ll have to.
