Around the Premier League: 7/18/11
Transfer and team news is starting to pick up for Chelsea, but it's also starting to pick up for many other clubs who didn't do all their shopping early in the window. I thought I'd throw together a few links to give you a look at what some of the competition is looking at lately.
The big news of the day is that Manchester City seem to have agreed on a fee to ship Carlos Tevez to Brazil. He's always been great at hitting us on the counter, so I'm not upset to see him leave at all (he's not that pleasant to look at either). They may well be replacing him with fellow Argentinian Kun Aguero though, adding more top class youth to a talented young squad.
Owen Coyle is quickly gaining a reputation of getting the most out of young players. FC Bracelona product Jeffren Suarez was blocked (and potentially forever if the Sanchez deal is finalized), and it looks as if talks are getting serious about bringing him to the Premier League. This is one I'd love to see happen, as after what they did with Jack Wilshere and Daniel Sturridge I'm developing a real soft spot for Bolton.
Arsenal have finally completed their signing of Lille's Gervinho. They seem to be on the verge of adding another under the radar youngster as well. Joel Campbell is probably a name you haven't ever heard of, but that's usually the Wenger way. The teenager has all the physical tools to excel, but Arsenal is a huge step up from competing in Costa Rica. Also in Arsenal news, Denilson is likely heading back to Brazil in a loan move that could become permanent. Making a living playing in South America seems like it's becoming a more viable option lately.
*There's also a bunch of stuff going on with Cesc and Nasri if you haven't heard...
Aston Villa have potentially gotten a real steal when they acquired Shay Given for only 3.5 million pounds. He's likely an upgrade to Brad Friedel, who'll now be competing for playing time at Tottenham. Now Villa just need to be as successful replacing Stuart Downing and Ashley Young. Their bid for Charles N'Zogbia seems to have been rejected, now they are being linked to surprise Copa America hero Juan Manuel Vargas.
QPR may have just been promoted, but their best player is aparently ready to leave them before taking a crack at the Premier League. Newly rich PSG are hot on the heels of Adel Taarabt, and the manager confirms he's likely leaving the club. I was actually quite interested in him as a low priced option, but that seems unlikely now.

If Given was available that cheap, I'm surprised Arsenal didn't make a play for him.
I know Scezney is the future there, but Given probably would have been an upgrade in the short term.
I will miss seeing Unfrozen Caveman Forward ply his trade in the EPL, although I won’t miss seeing him play Chelsea.

No Way
Arsenal has their new #1 goalie. Why spend a fortune in weekly wages to split time with you future guy? The only reasons I could see is that Arsenal paying Given’s wages is because Arsenal doesn’t fully trust Szczesny and/or they want a veteran to tutor Szczesny. Either case is fine but you can find much cheaper veterans who can provide both services easily. There are numerous goalies on Bosmans like Maik Taylor, Thomas Sorensen, Carlo Cudicini (who I want Chelsea to sign so we can sell Hilario and Turnbull), Dean Kiely, and Marcus Hahnemann are all listed as available according to Goal.com and that’s only in the Premier League.
No need for Arsenal to blow money when they need to re-sign Nasri. I’m sure Given’s wages are a close proximate to the increase Nasri wants.
Szvzesny is better than Given
Given is a good shot stopper, but he’s terrible in terms of commanding the box, unlike the Szcz

Neither does Szczesny's, yet
Then again, he’s 21.
He could be the Arsenal number one for 20 years.

Fair enough.
I didn’t think Szczęsny was particularly convincing when I watched Arsenal last year (especially at the end of the season) and Given seemed good for Man City a few years ago. But you’re certainly more familiar with Szczesny than I am.

He looked pretty good to me
He’s still prone to the occasional brainfart, but at his age I think that’s too be expected. I think consistently having the same CB pairing in front of him will help too.

Argentina?
Last I checked Sao Paulo, where Corinthians plays, is in Brazil.
However, Argentina’s military does have a history, according to the British, of invading nearby lands.
Joking of course.
Oops...

Kun Aguero
For some reason Kun Aguero is one of my favorites and it bums me to see him move to Man City. I don’t know why I like Aguero, my spanish team is Real Madrid (yeah I know 2 big clubs, but I like Mourinho, Ozil, Khedira, Di Maria and Sergio Ramos and only just started watching La Liga last year), but Aguero’s speed/tenacity combination is 2nd to only Tevez and I really like that he doesn’t need to be the go-to man on his team.
This is random but can you imagine the pressure his kid has to be a great footballer? Aguero + Maradona blood lines. Yikes.
I'm bummed we bought Torres and not Aguero.
I hope he proves me wrong, but I fear Torres is past it.
Aguero is pacy, tenacious, young, and full of potential. It’s not like we weren’t after him in previous transfer windows. It’s just too bad he’s leaving now, when we already have striker overload.

Maybe past it isn't the right description
More irrevocably damaged from being forced to play through injuries for the past 3 years.

If signing Torres convinces us to buy Lukaku instead of Aguero I'll be a very happy blogger
Aguero is fun to watch, but Lukaku has the physical tools to be a bigger handful than Drogba for the next ten to fifteen years

Taarabt
I wish we made a play for him. He could be a cheap-quick fix and fill the creator role void. Obviously not elite but better than Benayoun. He’d play against weaker teams and come on in 2nd halves when teams have successfully blocked us by sitting with 10 men back.
Plus he’s only 22 and he used to be a Tottenham prospect. Rubbing salt in the wound…
