Chelsea FC Transfer Rumours: Gregory Van Der Wiel Not Going To Bayern Munich

DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA - JUNE 19: Gregory Van Der Wiel of the Netherlands clashes with Daisuke Matsui of Japan during the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Group E match between Netherlands and Japan at Durban Stadium on June 19, 2010 in Durban, South Africa. (Photo by Phil Cole/Getty Images)

During the January transfer window, much noise was made about the possibility of Ajax right back Gregory van der Wiel joining Chelsea in order to fix our rather unbalanced situation there - currently we have all attack (Jose Bosingwa), all defence (Branislav Ivanovic) and a guy with good hair (Paulo Ferreira). Van der Wiel, already a full international for Holland, is considered to be one of the top right back prospects in the world, but recent rumours that he was signing for Bayern Munich rather seemed to scupper the thought of him heading for Stamford Bridge this year. So, on that front, good news!

reports in Germany suggest that Bayern have pulled out of race for Ajax RB Gregory van der Wiel. might well mean that CFC deal is doneless than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply

If Chelsea can secure the services of van der Weil and a wide forward in the summer without hemorrhaging depth in the prcoess, we'd be looking at a very very good team for next year. Hopefully it's the current round of rumours that are true, not the ones that having him go to Bayern.

Cole, Terry/Luiz/Ivanovic/Alex, VDW.

So, one of the best fullback tandems in the world to go along with an excellent group of centre backs.

Wide forward, right back, Lampard replacement.

I heard Ganso is going to Milan.

Rumors are nothing but rumors though.

We’ll have a very interesting off-season. Everything is up for grabs.

I would love to get Ganso from Santos, I just figured he was off the market with all the rumors about Milan.

But, of course, rumors are rumors so who knows what’s going to happen. It’s ridiculous that getting Neymar would be a slight disappointment, but with Sanchez out there, it would be. Adding Ganso to the deal would cure that disappointment pretty quickly.

Ganso looks good

But he said Italy for sure today. [Link]

Apparently, in Portuguese, Ganso means goose.

It would be quite silly to have Pato and Ganso on the same team.

I've been wondering if Alex might ask for a transfer this summer.

He’s looking at probably being the fourth-choice centerback otherwise.

Alex + £5m for Cesc :D

by Blue Celery on Apr 27, 2011 10:07 PM BST up reply actions

He's always been a pretty good soldier in a backup role

I doubt he’ll extend his deal, but his presence allows Bruma another loan spell

by Stephen Schmidt on Apr 28, 2011 12:31 AM BST up reply actions

I'd love to get Cesc

And Alex would become Arsenal’s best CB since The Invincibles upon walking into the team.

I actually wonder if we’ll shop Ivanovic instead, since he has more transfer value. If we get a solid right back then we might be able to make it up with youth. Ivan can play RB, but so can Luiz. Getting rid of one or the other doesn’t give you any more positional flexibility.

I like the idea of our future midfield being Mikel, Ramires and Cesc.

by Groy on Apr 28, 2011 4:36 AM BST up reply actions

lol

i certainly wouldn’t put any money on it, but cesc wants away from the cameldome, and i’m not certain that barca needs him/wants him/can afford him. the whole cesc/arsenal affair is starting to smell like as the ashley cole saga years back.

as for alex, i think he’s probably our biggest defencive liability, but fans look past it because he can rocket a free kick from 30 yards out twice a year. he’s at his best when he can get a string of games, but he seems like he’s always injured, and its going to be hard for him to break back in the side with the arrival of (new fan-favourite) david luiz.

I do like commenter Stephen Schmidt’s plan of holding on to Alex and letting Bruma develop another year though. Alex has 2 more years on his contract, and if we can get Bruma a loan in a prem side and he continues to grow, then we can sell Alex on next season.

The photo for this post

Is VDW pinching Matsui’s knob? oO

Sure looks like it!

Why do you think I chose that photo? :D

I'm worried about VDW's defense

I haven’t seen much of him, and his videos are almost all attacking.

We don’t need another RB that can’t defend. We already have one of those. One of his videos showed him getting red carded in the box for a bad tackle. It’s not like the Dutch are known for their impregnable back line. Has anyone seen him play consistently? Is he actually another Ashley Cole in the making?

by Groy on Apr 28, 2011 4:39 AM BST reply actions

He's been pretty good whenever I've watched Ajax and Holland

I haven’t seen him against a really good attacking team, though, so I can’t say for certain, but he;s less positionally inept than Bosingwa at the very least.

by Graham MacAree on Apr 28, 2011 5:28 AM BST up reply actions

That's all nice and such...but...what's this constant obsession with having 2 marauding fullbacks?

Discounting the Brazil teams that had Roberto Carlos & Cafu…what club team has made that work successfully?

I staunchly maintain that in modern football, you always need 2 CBs, 1 defensive mid, and 1 defensive/covering fullback who can drop back into what essentially then amounts to a 3-man defense.

What does give me hope in this case, though, is that VDW originally started out as a center back (as a youth), just like our good friend Ivan. If he’s essentially the 2nd coming of Ivan, but slightly better overall, count me down as excited.

by DPeezy on Apr 28, 2011 10:12 AM BST reply actions

Sorry it's taken me so long to get to this

Essentially, with the way Chelsea’s attack is structured now, it’s possible for the opposition to focus their best defensive resources onto certain areas of the pitch to disproportionately nullify Chelsea. We see this a lot regarding Ashley Cole – people will do their best to stop him and ignore Bran, because he’s not going to hurt you outside of set pieces.

Granted, the tricks for containing Chelsea down the left flank and centre don’t always work, but for the times they do you need a threat on the right that comes without losing defensive cover. It’s crucial to have a good defensive midfielder who can drop back when you’re playing two attacking fullbacks, however, and Chelsea have two players who’d be perfect there – John Obi Mikel and David Luiz. A dual threat fullback pairing is perfect for this team, tactically.

At least I think so.

by Graham MacAree on Apr 29, 2011 6:00 AM BST up reply actions

The threat on the right, needs to come from a forward, first & foremost

Adding a marauding fullback there will just expose us defensively.

If the opposition concentrates on & succeeds in stopping Cole & Malouda, then the responsibility falls on the right side of our attack, to the right-sided forward. This is why our best teams had equal helpings of creativity on both wings (Robben/Duff or Malouda/Anelka).

Now, ideally, in a game situation, if we’re getting no love down the left side, we would just flip our attack to the right and have Ashley hang back and play more defensively. Del Horno of the 05/06 team was very good at this. Ashley isn’t as much, I’m afraid (although he has gotten better over the years). That’s why having PF or Bosingwa on the right exposes us so much.

Leaving just the 2 central defenders and the defensive mid to cover is not enough for consistent performance. At best, you’re matched equally, 3-v-3…with no extra man to cover. That spells trouble.

Ideally you would have fullbacks on both sides who can switch easily between attacking & covering (so that we can switch the focus of our attacks at the drop of a hat and still be solid as a rock defensively). Unfortunately there are a scant few out there (Sergio Ramos? Evra?) who can do this easily & consistently…and currently we have none of them.

by DPeezy on Apr 29, 2011 8:48 AM BST up reply actions

Well, having PF and Bosingwa exposes us so much because they're bad at defending

This is a separate argument to having a right-sided fullback capable of attacking. You don’t want both wide defenders attacking at once, you want one attacking and one hanging back, but you also don’t want it to always be Cole attacking and [RB] hanging back. No matter how good the RF is, if you can’t play an overload on that side you really have your options restricted

by Graham MacAree on Apr 29, 2011 2:29 PM BST up reply actions

Chelsea made it work with the right personnel.

Also man utd make it work with Evra and (insert a twin here). It becomes the job of the defensive mid to sit back and be able to cover where needed so that player needs half a brain, but it works well.

by ChelseaMariner on Apr 28, 2011 1:02 PM BST reply actions

I don't think Chelsea ever did this to the level that one would imagine (aka. the Brazil level)

Our best lineups always had a balance of 1 attacking and (more) defensive fullback…and by always, I mean since the advent of the Mourinho 4-3-3.

Note how we won titles with a setup of Gallas or a reined-in Del Horno (LB-def) & Ferreira (RB-att) and didn’t win them when we swapped Cole for Gallas (not Ash’s fault, rather the fact that Ferreira was admiring his hair more often than playing defense). Scolari failed rather spectacularly with Cole & Bosingwa, in the end.

Our best has come when we relied on the forwards to be the creative force…whether that was the heyday of the Robben/Duff show or the Hiddink instilled tour-de-force of Malouda & Anelka.
