5 Up, 5 Down - A uniquely unofficial look at the comings and goings of Chelsea FC and the EPL
Sounds like Basel is reverting to Chelsea's tactics yesterday
Gamecast says they’ve had success on the counter so far
How would the media handle the Manchester teams going out and Chelsea and Arsenal advancing?
I think the world would implode
I'm sure they'd hate it
like a “slap in the face” :c)
by Sabrina Dessipe on Dec 7, 2011 8:14 PM GMT up reply actions
The coefficient is nothing to worry about
There’s basically zero chance England is dropping out of the top three spots and losing a place. Even if 2 of 4 got knocked out every year we’d still likely keep pulling away from Serie A, and that seems like it will be a fairly rare occurence.
by Stephen Schmidt on Dec 7, 2011 8:32 PM GMT up reply actions
In case you were wondering though
Here is how the coefficients are shaping up so far this year (updated this morning).
by Stephen Schmidt on Dec 7, 2011 8:37 PM GMT up reply actions
If anything, England's lead is bigger tomorrow.
Even if United and City crash out, they’ll go to the EL, whereas Spain will have two in the CL and one in the EL. Beyond that, things will probably shift toward Spain, but perhaps not.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
The gap right now is pretty gigantic anyway
And really the coefficient means absolutely nothing until you are dropping from third to fourth
by Stephen Schmidt on Dec 7, 2011 9:21 PM GMT up reply actions
Not able to watch the game myself.
Were there really two David-Luiz-against-Newcastle-yellows for Villareal? My commentary is saying they’re lucky to have XI.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
Maaaaybe...
One I can certainly recall…and it was borderline, I guess. A fair distance from the goal though…
It has one in the 22nd minute and one in the 4th.
I think the 22nd minute was what you were talking about, and I misunderstood a later comment about the early one. That one was supposedly a borderline red for a dangerous tackle.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
That was a nasty one.
Went over on his knee.

Man United trailing against Basel.
Vidic injured, their lack of a recognized central midfielder in the lineup… I know the inevitable late goal is coming, but I’ll enjoy their deficit while it lasts.
Even if they make it through, they'll likely finish second in their group.
Of course, with their luck, they’ll draw APOEL.
APOEL actually finished second to Zenit I believe
by Stephen Schmidt on Dec 7, 2011 8:38 PM GMT up reply actions
Nevermind, I'm just looking at a shit table
They won the head to head
by Stephen Schmidt on Dec 7, 2011 8:39 PM GMT up reply actions
If United were to finish second in the group
their possible opponents would be Bayern, Barca, Real, Inter and APOEL. Talk about dichotomy.
2-0 City through Yaya Toure.
Napoli still 0-0.
Basel nearly scored again. Still 1-0.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
That's the one I meant, but there was another good one just before it.

Basel go close again.
Poor free header from the corner.

Basel looking the more dangerous.

Lyon
Can Lyon overtake Ajax with more goals? It looks like they need 8 and they have 5…

Lyon 5-1, Real 2-0
They need one more either way, and Ajax is out!
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
Ajax are now out unless they score!
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
if everything goes as planned
This will be a day of immense schadenfreude. Slap in the face indeed AVB.
by Groy on Dec 7, 2011 9:17 PM GMT via iPhone app reply actions
How come
schadenfreude isn’t written shadenfreude? How is it pronunced with the “sch” in it? SKA?
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
It's pronounced properly.
We stole it.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
You told me last time
in English they like to write names differently, so I thought it could the same with other terms, too … since “sch” is so difficult to pronunce for English tongues.
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Sh is the default.
Try getting an English speaker to pronounce “bruschetta” properly.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
Chances are
Germans will pronunce it “brushetta” too – however there are maybe more people learning proper Italian
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Oh really?
I’m not sure whether it’s worth pronouncing it correctly as everyone will assume I’m wrong.
And how is the German one pronounced?
In English, yes.
It’s actually pretty close to the German pronunciation.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
DOE?
I was using the English pronunciation guides. It’s the schwa, like the “a” in “about”
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
Oh then ...
I only know the Latin guide (not that what I posted is like the Latin guide). Since it’s like Latin – everything is pronunced as it is written :p
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
I was going to use "deh," but...
…that often gets “day” in English speakers.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
KIN-dur-GAR-din
“As in, Kinder chocolate in the garden”
Zeitgeist is the same, but with a German “s” sound at the beginning.

I meant "'s' as pronounced in German"
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
by Kevin Kostka on Dec 7, 2011 10:05 PM GMT up reply actions
S in German isn't pronunced
uniformly. There is a sharp s like “fenster” and a soft one, like “sinn”
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Hrm. I've always thought of the...
…soft s as the default, modified by other consonants, if you get what I’m saying.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
by Kevin Kostka on Dec 7, 2011 10:18 PM GMT up reply actions
That's what I was hinting at
soft s in “sinn” – soft s in front of a syllable, sharp s in “fenster” at the end of the syllable
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
As opposed to brehk she-ah?
;D

15 minutes left for United to find a goal!

Jimmy Briand scores! 7-1.
Ajax gone.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
LOL
I didn’t know there was actually a game thread today, too. So I assume I missed all the fun. That is bad
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
I didn't waste my time though
but it’s funny what pictures google will show you when you are looking for David Luiz. It’s weird
I can certainly understand they show you pictures of Torres, Mata, Ballack and AVB. I can understand they show you Gerrard, Rooney and David Villa. But MONA LISA????!!!!
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Basel - United very very nervy.

Doesn't mean much either at this point

No United, No City?

Yes.
Napoli are going to win. Utd. 2-0 down.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
well in that case the EPL doesn't look so great...
My concern is it just makes those two that much fresher in league play… but I’ll take this situation anytime hahaha

No, then we have to take Gerard Pique.
He’s a good defender, but have you seen his face?

We can get, I believe...
…Napoli, CSKA, Basel, Lyon, OM, Zenit, or Milan.
Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!
APOEL finished 2nd
Would we not play them instead of Zenit?
They won the group
They had a win and a draw against Zenit, head to head is the first tiebreaker
by Stephen Schmidt on Dec 7, 2011 9:47 PM GMT up reply actions
Have to hope for..
Either Basel or one of the French teams, right?
I'd be hoping for anyone but Milan
We’re probably good enough to beat any of those teams over 2 legs, but I reckon Milan would give us a run for it.
I'd be happy with the russians actually
Just because of the way it fits into their schedule
by Stephen Schmidt on Dec 7, 2011 9:50 PM GMT up reply actions
I think Russians are two of the weaker teams
Just a tough travel for the team/fans. I think we beat any of those teams in two legs as well. Just most confident against Basel/Marseille, less so against the two Italian teams
I think any travel issues get sort of nullified since the Russian clubs are still in their pre-season of sorts.
Weird year with the transition to the new schedule, but they have a decent little break in there

Yeah.
I don’t want to root for injuries, but Man Utd getting slammed with injuries is definitely something we can benefit from.

The injuries have been kind to us
And with a good run of form coincided with a Man City tumble, we might be in the chase for this EPL yet.
Although I’m wondering how much of a mixed blessing not having CL to worry about will this be for the Manchester teams
by FootieFromAfar on Dec 7, 2011 10:55 PM GMT via mobile reply actions
Rooney will need to recover from this major blow
and Rooney likes to take his time to recover
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Lyon had only scored 2 goals in 5 CL matches before tonight.
They scored 6 goals in 28 minutes against Zagreb. They almost literally walked those goals in. Madrid’s A-team barely managed to win 1-0 in Zagreb for comparison.
Ajax get two perfectly legit goals ruled offside.
Lyon had also rested their best players.
Suspicious to say the least….
Perhaps someone from Lyon walked to Zagreb's dressing room at half time...
And offered a million or two for every goal they allow?
Those two yellows weren't even really deserved.
This reeks of foul play to me.
I mean one goal being ruled offside is normal, but two? And they weren’t even that close.
My guess is that Rooney's dad and the ref go way back, and the ref owed his dad a favour...
Sound familiar?
