Sounds like Basel is reverting to Chelsea's tactics yesterday

Gamecast says they’ve had success on the counter so far

Forza Napoli!

Si Si Si!!

Hamsik juuuust missed an absolute belter.

by DPeezy on Dec 7, 2011 8:26 PM GMT up reply actions

The coefficient is nothing to worry about

There’s basically zero chance England is dropping out of the top three spots and losing a place. Even if 2 of 4 got knocked out every year we’d still likely keep pulling away from Serie A, and that seems like it will be a fairly rare occurence.

by Stephen Schmidt on Dec 7, 2011 8:32 PM GMT up reply actions

If anything, England's lead is bigger tomorrow.

Even if United and City crash out, they’ll go to the EL, whereas Spain will have two in the CL and one in the EL. Beyond that, things will probably shift toward Spain, but perhaps not.

The gap right now is pretty gigantic anyway

And really the coefficient means absolutely nothing until you are dropping from third to fourth

by Stephen Schmidt on Dec 7, 2011 9:21 PM GMT up reply actions

0-0 at the half

Villareal playing allright. Napoli not so much. C’mon now…

by DPeezy on Dec 7, 2011 8:33 PM GMT up reply actions

Not able to watch the game myself.

Were there really two David-Luiz-against-Newcastle-yellows for Villareal? My commentary is saying they’re lucky to have XI.

Maaaaybe...

One I can certainly recall…and it was borderline, I guess. A fair distance from the goal though…

by DPeezy on Dec 7, 2011 8:40 PM GMT up reply actions

It has one in the 22nd minute and one in the 4th.

I think the 22nd minute was what you were talking about, and I misunderstood a later comment about the early one. That one was supposedly a borderline red for a dangerous tackle.

His first ever goal for Napoli

Just might seal their place in the knockout rounds. Awesome!

by DPeezy on Dec 7, 2011 9:09 PM GMT up reply actions

if everything goes as planned

This will be a day of immense schadenfreude. Slap in the face indeed AVB.

by Groy on Dec 7, 2011 9:17 PM GMT via iPhone app reply actions

How come

schadenfreude isn’t written shadenfreude? How is it pronunced with the “sch” in it? SKA?

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Dec 7, 2011 9:24 PM GMT up reply actions

It's pronounced properly.

We stole it.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Dec 7, 2011 9:26 PM GMT up reply actions

You told me last time

in English they like to write names differently, so I thought it could the same with other terms, too … since “sch” is so difficult to pronunce for English tongues.

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Dec 7, 2011 9:28 PM GMT up reply actions

Sh is the default.

Try getting an English speaker to pronounce “bruschetta” properly.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Dec 7, 2011 9:30 PM GMT up reply actions

Chances are

Germans will pronunce it “brushetta” too – however there are maybe more people learning proper Italian

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Dec 7, 2011 9:31 PM GMT up reply actions

With a "k"

broo-SKEH-tah

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Dec 7, 2011 9:41 PM GMT up reply actions

Oh really?

I’m not sure whether it’s worth pronouncing it correctly as everyone will assume I’m wrong.

And how is the German one pronounced?

by deg0ey on Dec 7, 2011 9:46 PM GMT up reply actions

Sch = sh

there is no “sh” in German

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Dec 7, 2011 9:46 PM GMT up reply actions

SHA-den-FROY-duh.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Dec 7, 2011 9:47 PM GMT up reply actions

duh?

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Dec 7, 2011 9:48 PM GMT up reply actions

In English, yes.

It’s actually pretty close to the German pronunciation.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Dec 7, 2011 9:50 PM GMT up reply actions

We certainly don't pronunce

SHA-DEN-FROY-DUH … SHA-DEN-FROY-DOE it would be

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Dec 7, 2011 9:51 PM GMT up reply actions

DOE?

I was using the English pronunciation guides. It’s the schwa, like the “a” in “about”

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Dec 7, 2011 9:54 PM GMT up reply actions

Oh then ...

I only know the Latin guide (not that what I posted is like the Latin guide). Since it’s like Latin – everything is pronunced as it is written :p

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Dec 7, 2011 9:56 PM GMT up reply actions

I was going to use "deh," but...

…that often gets “day” in English speakers.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Dec 7, 2011 9:57 PM GMT up reply actions

How do you pronunce

kindergarten, or zeitgeist?
Just curious

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Dec 7, 2011 9:58 PM GMT up reply actions

KIN-dur-GAR-din
“As in, Kinder chocolate in the garden”
Zeitgeist is the same, but with a German “s” sound at the beginning.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Dec 7, 2011 10:01 PM GMT up reply actions

Seitgeist.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Dec 7, 2011 10:03 PM GMT up reply actions

Why

German S, then? I thought with German S you meant “ß”

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Dec 7, 2011 10:04 PM GMT up reply actions

S in German isn't pronunced

uniformly. There is a sharp s like “fenster” and a soft one, like “sinn”

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Dec 7, 2011 10:07 PM GMT up reply actions

Hrm. I've always thought of the...

…soft s as the default, modified by other consonants, if you get what I’m saying.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Dec 7, 2011 10:18 PM GMT up reply actions

That's what I was hinting at

soft s in “sinn” – soft s in front of a syllable, sharp s in “fenster” at the end of the syllable

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Dec 7, 2011 10:22 PM GMT up reply actions

Either Basel or one of the French teams, right?

by cmi318 on Dec 7, 2011 9:46 PM GMT up reply actions

I'd be hoping for anyone but Milan

We’re probably good enough to beat any of those teams over 2 legs, but I reckon Milan would give us a run for it.

by deg0ey on Dec 7, 2011 9:48 PM GMT up reply actions

I'd be happy with the russians actually

Just because of the way it fits into their schedule

by Stephen Schmidt on Dec 7, 2011 9:50 PM GMT up reply actions

I think Russians are two of the weaker teams

Just a tough travel for the team/fans. I think we beat any of those teams in two legs as well. Just most confident against Basel/Marseille, less so against the two Italian teams

by cmi318 on Dec 7, 2011 9:59 PM GMT up reply actions

I think any travel issues get sort of nullified since the Russian clubs are still in their pre-season of sorts.

Weird year with the transition to the new schedule, but they have a decent little break in there

Lyon had only scored 2 goals in 5 CL matches before tonight.

They scored 6 goals in 28 minutes against Zagreb. They almost literally walked those goals in. Madrid’s A-team barely managed to win 1-0 in Zagreb for comparison.

Ajax get two perfectly legit goals ruled offside.

Lyon had also rested their best players.

Suspicious to say the least….

by Valens on Dec 7, 2011 11:58 PM GMT reply actions

Those two yellows weren't even really deserved.

This reeks of foul play to me.

I mean one goal being ruled offside is normal, but two? And they weren’t even that close.
