England Squad Announced; Daniel Sturridge Earns First Callup
Chelsea have four players in the England squad to face Spain and Sweden in international friendlies this week, and the big story is Daniel Sturridge's first senior callup. Obviously, the striker's been in good goalscoring form (if somewhat erratic at everything else) for the past nine months, and it had been a bit of a mystery as to how he's not gotten the call previously. But nevermind about the past snubs - he's in now and will hopefully impress.
The rest of the Chelsea boys are the usual crowd - John Terry retains his place despite the ongoing racism investigation by both the FA and the Metropolitan police, while Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard both retain their spots in the squad, although they're hardly guaranteed to start.
Anyway, here's the full list:
- Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, Scott Carson, David Stockdale.
- Defenders: Glen Johnson, Kyle Walker, Phil Jones, Gary Cahill, Phil Jagielka, John Terry, Joleon Lescott, Ashley Cole, Leighton Baines.
- Midfielders: Scott Parker, Gareth Barry, Frank Lampard, Jack Rodwell, James Milner, Stewart Downing, Adam Johnson, Theo Walcott.
- Forwards: Darren Bent, Bobby Zamora, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Daniel Sturridge, Daniel Welbeck.

'Bout time, Capello...
Seriously, though, I’m glad he’s finally getting a look-in for England. I am, however, worried about the lack of a Chelsea presence in future squads. The new generation coming through looks like it will be a big part of England in the future, and we only have two players in it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad we have Sturridge and McEachran in the mix, but I wish we had a few more. We currently have four, but three of them are probably coming to the end of their careers with England, and we only have one replacement in the near future, two if think Bertrand can eventually take Cole’s place. I know that value-wise compared to home-grown foreign players, English players aren’t really worth having, but I wish Chelsea were just a little more English. Right now, we have seven first-team players who are English. These four, Josh and Ryan, and ole’ Arsebadger.

I should say, it's not so much the lack of English players.
Arsenal, in fact, only have four. It’s the lack of young English players. Right now, Liverpool, United and City players are going to be most of the England team for the next decade. I guess I wish we had made a move to pick up more of these young guys around the time we got Sturridge. It’s not like a rapidly ageing squad wasn’t a problem then. Mostly, though, I wish we had at least pretended to go for Phil Jones!

I'd say chalobah is in with a shout in the future, even if it's a bit further off.
But yeah it is kind of sad.
Engish talent is overrated
Only few like Jones are really good but there are may who are overrated. Carrol, Henderson,Cahill to name afew
I, for one, am happier with as few of our players facing international duty as possible.
It mostly just leads to injuries or players falling out of form. Just look at RVP (who breaks a leg, and not in the good way, every time he puts on orange) and Rooney (who hasnt recovered yet from the last international break but was red hot before that).
Time away from Chelsea and AVB is only a bad thing. Less internationals = okay with me
Note: unless the reason we have less internationals is because they’re not good enough. I obviously prefer world class players. Ideally, they’d all be amazing and yet oddly overlooked by their international squads.

I'm operating under the assumption that almost all of our players will be internationals.
If we have to have them going away to national teams, I’d rather a few more going with England. : )

On a general basis
I agree very much with you. More internationals – more injuries – bad. However, for players from outside the EU there is this working license issue, so being an international or not affects their club progress. Then – just my 2 cents – I have the feeling many players do care much about their place in the NTs. Considering how much abuse JT and Frank have gotten back during their international careers you’d expect they just hang their boots and focus on life with Chelsea. They don’t. And it’s not that they have much to win with England. The chances are just so very thin
With the
inflation of transfer fees for English players it seems, there is no other chance we’d increase our English contingent despite they come through the ranks of the academy. Someone mentioned it somewhere (here?) some months ago – and I also wonder how much we would have to pay for Josh and Sturridge if they weren’t already Chelsea players.
Hope he uses his new passing skills.
Johnson over Richards? What kind of BS is that?
I just hope he doesn't use Lampard much

Looks like Lamps will be captain against Spain
Good on him, but still I hope he only plays the first half.
I hope
he plays a full match and proves he’s still worth it! I don’t care much about the England NT – I’ve never cared much about NTs in general and I certainly would hate seeing Frank injured while on England duty however I feel after all the unfair flames he’s gotten during his England career, he has a point to prove and I’d be happy if he could show to every “Fat Frank”-flameboys there is still much he could offer
Even with as big a Liverpool fan as I am, I just don't get why Downing is in that squad.
He’s been horrific more often than not lately.

So far as I know he's healthy.
Hasn’t been getting a ton of run-out until the last few weeks, but that has more to do with Dalglish than anything. The more time he’s had, the better he’s looked, so I don’t know if it’s a form issue.
Really, though, you’d have to ask Capello. I don’t know his reasoning.

Me neither
that’s why I was asking. Given the form thing, that I agree with. Being benched isn’t exactly the healthiest way to regain your form, is it?
Am I the only one that wonders
if they think the attacking Chelsea contingent are helpful because of Chelsea’s Spanish contingent? I mean, maybe it was wise planning of the squad in regards to Capello expecting that Fernando and Juan would be called up, and Sturridge and Lampard play up front with them regularly? I could be over-thinking it. If so Del Bosque might be wise to surprise them with mostly the little guys… though Nando does have a decent track record against Terry :) Maybe they also figure they will need a little muscle as insurance.
I have to admit, while I’ve paid no mind to injuries in ManU, there are some names I would have expected on that list otherwise that I am surprised aren’t there. Maybe it is just because they are friendlies though and Capello feels alright with trying out some new things.
Still… this list is better than recent US call ups.
