Chelsea Roster: What Needs To Change?

I've been thinking about this fanpost for awhile now and found some motivation after today's debacle vs. Arsenal. It's clear that AVB has the right idea with some wrong players, and I think it's important for us to keep in mind that he needs to make the team his own. With that in mind, how will he make the team his own? Well, thats what I'll hopefully project. At each position (just defense for now), I'll list what I think needs to be done and what I think will actually happen going foreword.

Let's start at goal keeper. This one's not too difficult to project personal wise. It appears all to obvious that Petr Cech will move on from Chelsea or retire and Thibaut Courtois will take over. The real unknown is what the timeline will look like. Will Cech keep going for five years or more? Or will Courtois (who I view as extremely talented) move past Cech in two years or maybe three? I think the ladder is more likely. Courtois will be pushing in two years after his loan spell at Athletico is done and will probably take over the starting role.

Now lets move across the backline starting at Left back. Ashley Cole has the starting role down with a iron grip, thats not going to change. Who's behind Cole is more interesting. Prospects Patrick Van Aanholt and Ryan Bertrand have been on the same progression course and look to be developing nicely. This means there should be NO NEW SIGNINGS. I emphasize that because we don't need Alvaro Pereira or any semi-enticing left back in the world. We have two homegrown fullbacks that both look to be good enough to assume the role when Cole inevitably starts slowing down. Will AVB feel the same way? I think so. Hopefully his summer swoon with Pereira is over and we can turn our attention away from foreign prospects and onto our prospects.

The center back position is a strange situation at best. Terry is starting to produce gaffes that we simply use to never see (I'm not talking about today, that was Malouda's fault). Ivanovic is ever sturdy but never quite fantastic. David Luiz is brilliant but needs a more secure player beside him when he plays. With Alex most likely departing the bridge soon this opens the not pressing but still present need to buy a centerback. Potential prospects include Diego Godin, Neven Subotic, and Cahill. I've never been impressed by Cahill and would go as far to say he's overrated. Subotic is quality but I can't see Dortmund willing to sell. That leaves Godin who we've been linked to before, I've seen him play while watching Athletico for Courtois. I'm impressed and think 14-16 mil. is probably a fair price for him. My gut feeling is that AVB will think the same way. He flirted with Scott Dann before the season starting and might just return to La Liga to plug the hole in the roster (just like he did with Juan Mata).

Now we wrap up with the right back position. Most of us on WAGNH agree that there needs to be fresh talent there most likely in the form of Samuel Inkoom. Bosingwa is very good attacker but lacks the defensive edge needed to hold the backline together. He's the clear weak link in the defense. Ivanovic is the same issue but switched, not great at attack but very solid in defense. Does AVB see the problem? Yes. Does he think it's as much as a problem as we do? No. I'm not sure if it's a Portuguese connection or not but AVB puts a lot of confidence in Bosingwa. So much confidence that I don't see a January move for Inkoom taking place. I hope I'm wrong because we do need fresh talent there, but I don't see him spending there at least until next summer (maybe not even then).

That's my outlook on the defense. I could make one for the midfield and attack too, tell me what you think in the comments.

I'm glad you are sensible about Cole

I saw way too many people in the comments today talking about how Bertrand should take over, as soon as next game. This is of course ridiculous as Cole is still a top5 LB in the world, and I should probably narrow that down more. He has been performing very well this season and has been (and still is) the closest thing you can get to the equivalent of a “lock-down corner” in American football. You can put him out on an island by himself and he will be able to defend almost anyone good enough that they won’t get by him and score or get an EASY cross off.

As far as the RB spot, I’d like to see Ivanovic there. I still don’t like his positional awareness in the center of the field (as he watched Gervinho run through the middle today) and he certainly can’t be worse at crossing than Bosingwa is. Bosingwa is fast and can SORT of dribble but what does that get him? Open space to…give the ball to the first defender on the cross. Not to mention that he loses the ball trying to dribble fairly often as well. Iva or someone new at RB, Bosingwa needs to go.

Good Points

Cole certainly has his moments but overall is an excellent option. As for Bosingwa, he was actually pretty good today attacking but also showed his lack of positional awareness and skill in the defensive zone. I felt like every time Gervinho was 1-on-1 with Bosingwa he was getting by him.

I thought Bosingwa was dreadful today.

He was decent in attack, but he was missing a awfully lot in defence. I mean literally, there was a hole in defence. Sure, part of it was Sturridge not tracking back, but sometimes neither did, staying forward. It was unbelievably terrible defensive play.

I think Ashley Cole's replacement is something we do have to start looking at.

Today was just a bad game for him, though I think we’ve seen more and more poor showings out of him in the last season and a half. I think he’s still going to be a top-class left back for two or three years yet, but I think Bertrand or PVA should start getting a few more matches per season. I think Bertrand has the ability to take over in a few years.

I agree

Even though they would be competing against each other, I’d like us to find a way to keep both Van Aanholt and Bertrand.

by Dlewis on Oct 30, 2011 1:33 AM GMT up reply actions

Personally, I rate Bertrand higher, but, PVA is probably...

…the better player now. I think we’ll end up selling PVA, since it makes more sense that way, at least to me.

Will sell Van Aanholt to.....

Hamburg! I’m mean where else would we get get rid of young prospects?

by Dlewis on Oct 30, 2011 2:45 AM GMT via mobile up reply actions

Bertrand is like Cole

I think we should have send PVA for a loan till winter and then send Bertrand for remainder of the season. This way we would be able to see both of them get games and even have cover for Cole (if he requires it)

by Archit Arya on Oct 30, 2011 6:12 PM GMT up reply actions

I'm sticking by Cole

I reckon he’s the best in the world in is position, maybe evra is equal…he’s been playing full on winger and defender for us and thats a tough job.

Have we ever actually been linked to Inkoom

I’ve only ever heard about him on this blog.

I do remember one post about how the Chelsea scout was watching the Nigeria game i.e watching Inkoom, but as far as I can remember that was a vague assumption given there were 21 other players playing.

by TPalmer on Oct 30, 2011 6:48 AM GMT reply actions

There was two links

One saying we were watching him when Ghana played in England and then a direct quote from him saying he’d like going to Chelsea.

by Dlewis on Oct 30, 2011 1:48 PM GMT via mobile up reply actions

For CB we need to go to dortmund

either of Subotic or Hummels will work i think Godin is not in their league..who else can we go for??

by Archit Arya on Oct 30, 2011 12:05 PM GMT reply actions

There are other options

Like Raul Albiol who deemed as not needed at Real Madrid, and some youth products. The problem is I’ve had is that I can’t imagine Dortmund selling besides maybe Gotze. I think Godin is the best option value wise.

by Dlewis on Oct 30, 2011 1:56 PM GMT via mobile up reply actions

Lets get Gotze then

For Defense I dont want Raul Albiol even Diego Godin lets then go for Jan Vertonghen from ajax or Adil Rami from Valencia

by Archit Arya on Oct 30, 2011 2:06 PM GMT up reply actions

Good Choices

Never been convinced by Rami even when he was at Valencia. Vertonghen however is superb, that would be a great buy.

by Dlewis on Oct 30, 2011 3:03 PM GMT via mobile up reply actions

I kind of agree I was stupid to suggest Rami

but we can look at Lovren but first target should be any one of the dortmund duo

by Archit Arya on Oct 30, 2011 6:23 PM GMT up reply actions

For Midgield

We need a defensive midfielder like Javi Martinez and deep lying play maker like Schweinsteiger or Sahin (Chelsea should have signed him in sumer..for 10mil he would have been a steal)

by Archit Arya on Oct 30, 2011 12:14 PM GMT reply actions

I just hope Roman doesn't push AVB into a panic buy...

Like he did with Carlo last year with Torres….

by CanadianBlue on Oct 31, 2011 6:53 PM GMT via mobile reply actions

The fans may be more impatient at this point then the owner

Of course, you never know for sure…but that’s the general feeling that I get…

by DPeezy on Oct 31, 2011 7:44 PM GMT up reply actions

Well, just as long as he doesn't do anything stupid...

Like, say 50 mill for Gary Cahill in an attempt to bolster our defence…if he manages some good deals I’d be happy

by CanadianBlue on Oct 31, 2011 8:38 PM GMT via mobile up reply actions

We just need a relatively calm winter

No last minute buys. Snap up De Bruyne and Inkoom early. Loan out De Bruyne to Genk for the rest of the season. That should be our transfer window.

by Dlewis on Nov 1, 2011 3:27 AM GMT via mobile up reply actions

That would be a terrific transfer window.

Also we need to loan out Josh as well.

I wish I knew where we were going formation wise

It gets difficult to make suggestions past that point once we start looking at the the rest of the team.

by Culain on Nov 2, 2011 11:00 AM GMT reply actions

Um...4-3-3?

AVB seems pretty set with that formation and the overall tactical philosophy that he’s trying to drill into the players. It’s a proven tactic and style, so I don’t really see him deviating from it.

And if Emenalo/the board is in accordance with him, any future buy will be to fit this system…

by DPeezy on Nov 2, 2011 4:01 PM GMT up reply actions

That being said...

I would like to see a Midfield/Forward section(s) as well.
