Chelsea Vs. Queens Park Rangers: The Best Loss You'll Ever See

Photo

How do you respond to giving up a stupid penalty in the first ten minutes against a team you should beat and then having two red cards dished out against you in the first half? How do you deal with the fact that Chris Foy seems hell-bent on giving you nothing and them everything*? How do you deal with the fact that you play terribly for 45 minutes and then have to continue with just nine men?

*I hate hate hate blaming the referee for things, but sometimes... you've got to blame the referee for things. But that's the last I'll say of Chris Foy.

If you're Chelsea, apparently, you play your god damn hearts out. Yes, we lost, and yes, it was a big waste of points. But the way the players who remained on the field fought in the second half was absolutely heroic. Nine-man Chelsea happily outplayed Queens Park Rangers but couldn't get the goal they deserved, with every single player on the pitch putting in a brilliant shift as they tried to reclaim a point at Loftus Road.

That it didn't end up happening is barely relevant. Points were dropped, yes, but steel was shown, and for that I'm immensely pleased with the performance.  At the end of the day, it's just one loss in a season that lasts 38 games, so the impact of this match on the standings isn't huge. What is a big deal is that the team fought hard in the face of stupid odds, and they very nearly made it through.

Stand up and be counted, boys. You did us proud. Oh, and when QPR come to the Bridge? No respect, no mercy. Slaughter them.

I just hope AVB uses this to drive us forward this year.

Had we finished just a little better, we honestly could have won today. Somehow, I think we deserved at least a draw, despite our poor first half.

Drogba is pretty much dead to me now

Give either Danny or LUKAKU the chances to shine up front when Torres is rested.

by Al Benson on Oct 23, 2011 6:25 PM BST reply actions

I have to agree with you.

If players are selected on merit and all of our strikers/wingers are fit, then I’d choose Kalou (yes who’d have thought it??) before Drogba at this moment in time. Drogba seems lost and is struggling to get anything right atm, bar his return pass to Sturridge right at the start of the game.

by allies8fl on Oct 23, 2011 7:18 PM BST up reply actions

I have to agree as well.

Our style isn’t suited for a ‘Big Man’ striker. We need an inside forward up front like Anelka, Sturridge or Torres.

by Valens on Oct 23, 2011 7:39 PM BST up reply actions

Admirable effort for Chelsea in the second half.

Nine men keeping the ball around 60% is wonderful. I’m proud of the team. We might not win the title this year, but we’re building toward the future.

by Cablinasian on Oct 23, 2011 6:38 PM BST reply actions

This has to be the least miffed I've ever been about a defeat...

Which is strange considering Drogba’s red, Nico’s miss, Chris Foy and us needlessly dropping 3 points. Probably because of the much improved (9 man) 2nd half performance.

Hey guys, I'm new to this site.

I joined it mostly to vent ;) , but I have been following you guys for 8 or 9 months. First of all, that was the most biased refereeing I have ever seen. I have never been more angry at a game of sport (although it did become comical towards the end, it got so bad). Second of all, David Luiz is quickly becoming my favourite Chelsea player, he was phenomenal. I also thoroughly disliked the QPR fans time wasting and poor sportsmanship. The ref should be sacked!!!! (Sorry for being so negative but I’m passionate about freaking justice haha)

by Chelsea-Steeler on Oct 23, 2011 6:43 PM BST reply actions

Welcome

Yeah, that ref was crap. I was getting flashbacks to farcelona

by FootieFromAfar on Oct 24, 2011 3:24 AM BST via mobile up reply actions

It's almost like

Foy was in the locker room for the QPR pregame talk.

Strategy: 1) kick the ball long 2) fall down. Right, got it.

But yes, it was a fantastic performance for being 9 on 12.

by PeeDub on Oct 23, 2011 6:51 PM BST reply actions

What does it all mean

So, forgive my ignorance…

We saw 7 yellows and 2 reds today. What does it mean for our upcoming matches?

Both Drogba and Bossy are out for next three matches, yes? But no one at risk of suspension because of the yellows.

Just confirming.

by ChelseaDC on Oct 23, 2011 7:26 PM BST reply actions

Also

In terms of Foy, does the Premiership do any type of regular reffing review, analyzing performance and whatnot? Just curious.

I’m wondering if AVB’s harsh comments may earn some fine, too?

by ChelseaDC on Oct 23, 2011 7:28 PM BST up reply actions

Couldnt help but be proud of the 2nd half desire and drive !

Despite all the wretched effort put by Chris Foy to derail us, we showed them who the real men were. David Luiz needs to curb his recklessness a bit though I forgive all that for his energy & drive and the impetus he provides us with going forward. No wait, forget his recklessness! I’m his biggest fan!
Been reading your posts for a few weeks now. Finally registered. I think the blogs great! Thanks Graham! Much blue love from the Maldives!

I'm pretty sure I savaged Didier Drogba in my Fernando Torres Report Special...

…then completely forgave him because his stupid red card led to sexy, angry David Luiz. As I’m a straight man, that’s got to count for something.

Drogs was absolute rubbish today..

Maybe we should clone a few more David Luizes!

by Garrincha7 on Oct 23, 2011 8:23 PM BST up reply actions

re DL, yes but no

He was a terror at times in the second half. But he’s got to find a way to harness the anger. There were moments where I was convinced he was headed for a(nother) card. We see it regularly from him. There’s playing right on the edge, and then there’s being perilously close to being over it, without the certainty that he can hold himself back.

I think it’s a maturity thing. But they’ve got to find a way to work on it, as a club, so as he plays more and more, it doesn’t become a liability.

(Not trying to throw water on the fire. But this has been on my mind lately.)

by ChelseaDC on Oct 23, 2011 8:29 PM BST reply actions

Agreed

I honestly think he’s the most talented footballer that the club’s seen since Zola, but he’s got to know where the line is

by Graham MacAree on Oct 23, 2011 8:32 PM BST up reply actions

Hopefully he can learn from JT.

JT has always been a master at getting to the line, but mostly not crossing it. If he can combine the JT discipline with his natural flair and defensive quality, he will be [one of] the best defender[s] in the world.

Refereeing

Unbelievable. We totally got screwed, but we should still have managed a point out of this. I think we are the best team in the league, and expect to finish first, but today should have been a win even with the horrible – I mean, HORRIBLE – refereeing.

Mata

It looked like Mata took a bit of a knock there. Anyone seen anything about whether it was minor/severe?

by ChelseaDC on Oct 23, 2011 9:10 PM BST reply actions

QPR Fan here

Valid complaints from you guys on the Bosingwa red card … hate to see a game come down to a close call like that. But the penalty looked legitimate. An exaggeration, maybe, but Luiz has to know better than to bump a guy in the area. And Drogba’s tackle was inexcusable.

Good luck the rest of the season, you guys can get right back on the horse with Everton, Arsenal, and more Champions League play.

by Pierson on Oct 23, 2011 9:59 PM BST reply actions

I think the penalty could have gone either way

But if Foy calls it, I’d expect him to have called any of the penalty shouts in the second half

by Graham MacAree on Oct 23, 2011 10:01 PM BST up reply actions

That's the kicker for me

I think the penalty was a call that goes either way. I think the Bosingwa red is too harsh, considering that both of them were jostling for the ball and there was another Chelsea defender coming into the picture. The Drogba call, yes, right onm stupid move on his part.

What’s so galling is that Foy missed more than a few calls in return in the second half. Luiz hauled down. Another on Luiz. The Lampard missed call. Etc etc. If you are going to call a tight game, cards for everything, it’s got to go both ways. And today it clearly didn’t.

by ChelseaDC on Oct 23, 2011 10:09 PM BST up reply actions

As with ANY refereeing in ANY sport

All you can ask for is CONSISTENCY, regardless of how harsh/lenient a ref may be.

In baseball – call the same strike zone.
In hockey/football/basketball – call the same fouls, be they ticky-tacky or legitimate

The only thing Chris Foy was consistently good at today is being a shitty ref.

by DPeezy on Oct 24, 2011 6:06 AM BST up reply actions

Yeah, maybe

Several calls that could have gone either way. I don’t think Foy set out to stick it to Chelsea, but I admit it’s no fun watching a game come down to the officiating.

I couple you guys could have scored without referee help, too. Anelka had one he should have buried, and headed it right at our ’keeper.

by Pierson on Oct 23, 2011 10:07 PM BST reply actions

I don't think Foy was biased

He just did a pretty damn poor job officiating. And yes, we could have done better with what we did have too

by Graham MacAree on Oct 23, 2011 10:33 PM BST up reply actions

This isn't going to be a popular opinion

But I’m really getting tired of his stupid, needless, reckless tackles. And he’d good for 1 or 2 every game. And today it cost us dearly. Yeah, the two red cards were very bad, but QPR was already up to a stupid needless penalty at that point.

Angry, sexy in the 2nd half was superbly amusing to see, but someone needs to smack him in the head and have him cut that shit out already.

by FootieFromAfar on Oct 24, 2011 12:15 AM BST via mobile reply actions

He has a short fuse

and that’s an understatement. I knew (and I’m sure you all did too) the penalty was coming before it was given. The second Luiz got bumped the first time you saw the anger swell up and his body language changed immediately. He went back for the ball a second time, except he really didn’t give a crap about the ball, he wanted revenge.

He needs to curb that revenge mentality as a defender. In reality, Torres and Drogba both have it too and is directly what led to their red cards. They lost the ball, got pissed off, and went back in with too much anger. All of these players need to learn to just take a deep breathe and not do anything stupid after getting beat one way or another. Oh, and Cole too…

by AmericanChelseaFans on Oct 24, 2011 12:31 AM BST up reply actions

FYI, still love him in Chelsea kit

I may complain, but that is because I want to see him start every single game and I’d like to not be worried about that one con and celebrate the innumerable pro’s he provides while on the field. Or in pictures.

by AmericanChelseaFans on Oct 24, 2011 12:32 AM BST up reply actions

I think most everyone is tired of the all the stupid tackles

most are willing to put up with it though because they like the rest of what he is doing.

by Noleforever9399 on Oct 24, 2011 12:32 AM BST up reply actions

I think he has cut out the stupid tackles a bit in his time with the club.

Obviously, he still has a long way to go, but he’s much less raw than in his first few games at the club. Seriously, if you can find them, watch those early games. He’s made big progress, and that makes me optimistic, even if he’s not there yet.

by Kevin Kostka on Oct 24, 2011 1:05 AM BST up reply actions

Yeah, don't get me wrong

He’s still one of my 5 favorite players on the team right now. In fact, I’m asking for his jersey for Christmas. But the stupid tackles need to go. It was cute / amusing at first (I think Graham really nailed it when he described him as a crazy puppy), but it’s losing that quality quickly.

by FootieFromAfar on Oct 24, 2011 3:15 AM BST via mobile up reply actions

Agreed.

It was nice to see his enthusiasm in the beginning but now it’s getting risky.

by emily on Oct 24, 2011 3:17 AM BST up reply actions

We would've recovered from the penalty without the laughable card (Bossman) and the moronic card (Drogba)

I’m guessing we’ll curb some of his recklessness, much like we’ve done with Ramires. Let’s just hope that he doesn’t lose too much of the positive things that he does, which I suspect stem from the same quality…

by DPeezy on Oct 24, 2011 6:13 AM BST up reply actions

So frustrating to watch but they did play very well in the second half

I think the penalty and Drogba’s red card were deserved. Bosingwa should’ve gotten a yellow though, in my opinion.

I was very angry at Drogba for doing something so stupid when he should know better. And I agree with what others have said about Luiz. For the most part, he makes up for it but he needs to chill before he costs us more goals.

by emily on Oct 24, 2011 3:17 AM BST reply actions

Was surprised when AVB substituted Sturridge..

I thought Drogba deserved to be substituted !!!

Cheers,
Rohi D

by Rohi D on Oct 24, 2011 6:12 AM BST reply actions

So did Sturridge, in all fairness

And Drogba is the more “complete” player, theoretically more capable of playing a lone role, making up for a missing player. The Drogba of old would’ve been exceptional in this scenario…but sadly, this current version was anything but.

AVB kept him on, clearly putting his faith in the big guy (I would’ve done the same, tbh)…who then duly squandered it. If Didier keeps this up, resigning Anelka becomes a much higher priority.

by DPeezy on Oct 24, 2011 6:20 AM BST up reply actions

And it didn't help that they were playing balls into space instead of at his feet

I think it’s hard for the team to be able to switch seamlessly between the two styles, which may start to really suck for us.

by Al Benson on Oct 24, 2011 6:52 AM BST via mobile up reply actions

That's assuming AVB wants to play a different style with Drogba

I mean you kind of have it, but then again, AVB does seem to be more of “system”/style guy. Maybe Drogba needs a Lampard-esque ass kicking from the manager and he’ll get his head back on straight.

by DPeezy on Oct 24, 2011 7:09 AM BST up reply actions

Agree that Drogba is a complete player

But, Sturridge is the man who has been in form lately…I cant even recollect a good performance by Drogba in recent past.

Cheers,

Be invisible

“It’s key to being a good ref. No one pays to watch Chris Foy referee. I want to walk out of the ground at the end and have no one know who I am. The way to do that is to ensure the game runs smoothly. If I had my way I’d blow my whistle four times: start of the game, end of the first half, beginning of the second and end of the game. Unfortunately that doesn’t happen.”

The irony is making me homicidal.

by RamStamford on Oct 24, 2011 9:46 AM BST via mobile up reply actions

Guys

Has it ever happened that a ref was found guilty and then charged of being biased?
If not then dont you think the FA should look into such matters rather than fining managers for their rants against the ref?

by RamStamford on Oct 25, 2011 7:15 AM BST via mobile reply actions

In the PL,

referees are punished for bad performances by a demotion to Championship matches for a week or three. It’s happened a few time in recent years. I understand the FA’s stance. Too often, the referee is a scapegoat for a bad performance. I think it’s better if they ignore a few legitimate bad games than have it be open season on refs, who get enough crap as it is.
