So maybe negotiations for David Luiz aren't quite as dead as they seemed earlier this morning. According to Chelsea TV, talks with Benfica haven't really stopped, and the Portuguese outfit are just playing hardball in their negotiations with Chelsea. While this is kind of annoying, it's hard to blame Benfica - Luiz is a major asset and they really should try to get as much as possible for him, while Chelsea should in turn to everything they can to minimise his price. Obviously, this is good news for Blues fans, because even if you don't think Luiz is worth what Chelsea will end up paying for him, there may not be enough time to add an extra defender to the squad. Which would be bad, because we've already seen Paulo Ferreira play as a centreback far too many times this year.
Anyway, since negotiations maybe possibly aren't dead, I'm going to stop being on ready-to-burst-into-seething-rage alert status for a little while. Instead, I bring you Graham's end-of-January emotion chart, a general guide for Chelsea fans:
Nobody: January is such a tease. After all that work, nothing? Dammit, Chelsea. Dammit, football.
Defender (non-Luiz) only: Well, I'll take it, but is the best we could do?
Torres only: Wow. Spending money is great and all, and Fernando Torres is fantastic, but, uh, we still need a defender, Roman. Help?
Luiz only: I'm really happy we finally landed him, but the Torres talks left me wanting more.
Torres+defender (non-Luiz): Shame we couldn't get Luiz, but otherwise - how awesome is this? One of the best strikers in the world and an answer to our defensive depth? Late Christmas at the Bridge!
Torres+Luiz: I HAVE LITERALLY EXPLODED WITH HAPPINESS GIVE ALL OF MY STUFF TO DAN PETRESCU.
