Chelsea News Roundup
Just a quick wrap of the Chelsea news for the past few days.
- Paulo Ferreira has retired from international football. It's easy to forget just how good Ferreira was with us after we brought him over from Porto, but once upon a time he was in the top five full-backs on the planet, capable of playing left or right with equal aplomb. Unfortunately, that time has passed and he's now shaky at best in top-level play. His retirement lets him go gracefully into the sun from Portugal's standpoint, but I can't imagine that he's much longer for the club game either.
- The date for the Carling Cup match against Newcastle was announced: September 22nd at Stamford Bridge, 7:45 PM BST.
- Goalkeeper Matej Delac signed a professional contract with the team and was immediately loaned to Eredivisieside Vitesse, where he joins Chelsea and Serbia teammates Nemanja Matic and Slobodan Rajkovic.
- Jose Bosingwa is back in full training, which means that Ivanovic's loss won't be felt as keenly - down the right flank, at least.
- Jeffrey Bruma signed a four-year deal today. Bruma, 18, will be with the club until at least 2014 and should be a starting for the Blues before too long. I'm sure it's a very exciting day for him, as this contract essentially represents his graduation from the youth ranks.
- We also got an estimated time on his return to full fitness: the Dutch international expected to be ready to play opposite Newcastle on the 22nd, meaning that we don't have any real centre-back cover for the Premier League match against West Ham nor our opening game of the Champions League.
- In the meantime, we find out that John Terry's hamstring injury has been bothering him since the World Cup.
- In case you missed it, Branislav Ivanovic is out for anywhere between two to six weeks with a back problem that already forced him to missed the Stoke game.
- I don't like the way those last two bullet points dovetail. If the international break fails to prove enough time off for Terry, we're looking at Michael Essien or possibly even full-back Patrick van Aanholt in the centre of defence for the next two games. This does not sound like a recipe for success.
- Also, Jose Mourinho is "not Harry Potter." Well then.

He's good enough to be interesting
Not good enough to play in the first team for Chelsea or Holland yet, but the fact that he’s 18 and even being thought of as breaking into either starting lineup is good.
If he keeps developing the way he’s expected too he’ll be a great player.
